Hi guys - I've got my interview in about 10 days as a Kitchen Hand for the 2015 season at Perisher. Excited beyond belief, nervous beyond belief, confused beyond belief. I'd had a read through a lot of old posts regarding accommodation, interviews, work, etc, but I'm still a bit in the dark about some things.

What would you recommend as accommodation to someone like me working as a Kitchen Hand? I'm thinking of trying to get in to Willow since I'll be on mountain, but I'd be lying if I said I was ok with missing out on the more party-ish vibe going on at The Station. I'm on my green P plates (I'll be 18 for this season) - will this present me any issues if I drive down to Jindabyne, and if so, where would I leave my car if I stayed at Willow?

I'm also just wondering about the interview process and how to approach this and what to expect from it.

Thanks very much for any help!

My daughter has done seasons at Willow. She tells me the good side is you are on snow, don't have to drive up etc. Bad side is there is not much happening there. She made a lot of good friends with the people who were staying there, they get to know each other pretty well. There is a shuttle bus that runs between there and perisher, so you can head up to Perisher if you want a little more nightlife, but the shuttle doesn't run late in the evenings every night.

You can park the car at the ski tube long term car park and get the tube up to Perisher. You can drive the car up to Willow to dump your gear etc, but there is no overnight parking there.

If there was a big party on in Jindy she used to go down for the night, crash at someones place and get a lift back up in the morning.

My daughter has told me if she does anymore seasons she would stay in Jindy, more happening, more parties etc

Living & working on snow is all about the vibe.

This is one of the few areas where Perisher is the worst resort in the country - the village atmosphere is lame-ass* in comparison to Thredbo or Buller or Falls or even Hotham.

If you work Perisher and value the vibe - get digs in Jindy. If you work Perisher and value your hip-pocket (cause you are gunna put your head down, save your dosh and go do a season at a Vail Resort ;) then get digs in Perisher.

(*lame-ass in comparison - still plenty of fun to be had)

My interview is Friday. I'll be a first-timer to a season too. Maybe we can hold each others hands? I'm worried as I'm not much of a partier I might miss out or be left out, but am hoping for on snow accom to save on travel time.

Id stay in Jindy, not up the mountain or the station, the station is awful and in the middle of nowhere and all the gigs they have out there have poor attendance. Watch out for your early shifts, they always have a RBT for the morning after and being on your Ps you will blow over every time.

The best accommodation option is to find a share place in Jindy, 2nd best would be Willow, 3rd would be the Station .... IMHO

Your biggest "worry" will be the militant feral Snow Blitz police presence.

Don't forget the Blocks at PV. I don't know how they manage them these days (what departments get beds there etc) but the season I spent living there (2004) was one of the best I did at Perisher. Back then there were lots of hospitality staff in Brown Block. I was in Blue, had a room to myself for most of the season and it was fantastic. Saved a lot of money that year. Also spent a lot at Basils on Tuesday nights. Good times

I could grab your number and we could meet up before the interview? Might help calm our nerves a little.

To everyone else - thank you very much for all your help, I'll look into everything regarding accommodation.

Actually I think we were sitting next to each other at one stage! You're doing music/sound tech right?

And @Jordan666, yeah, got the job! Super stoked to be down there - I start June 22 but I think I'll head down a bit earlier.

I didn't. Quite disappointed. Wasn't in the best frame of mind when I did the interview. Plus I think my age may have been against me :(

:( I'm sure it wasn't your age, you were probably just having an off day. Apply again next year, have a good nights sleep the day before, and hopefully all goes well.

I went for the tickety/gate position. They only had 5 spots available. Still crushing though. If I go down there I want an on snow role preferably. My desk job is having a negative impact on my health so was hoping for a standing position for a break. Guess I should keep applying for my adult jobs...
