For as long I can remember on a powder day, you will see first tracks almost directly under Crackers chair, from middle-station up. They are always short-swing and symmetrical.

They are also your first indication of snow quality on the upper slopes. For me it evokes mixed emotions: excitement, jealousy and anxiety (come on, crank up the chair).

I was wondering, is this a Thredbo tradition?

It could be a look-at-me ego thing or a bad luck suckers, I got there before you did. Or simply someone has to ski the line. I'm guessing all of the above.

Interested to know if there is any story/history behind this.

Like tracking marsupials .... the track of the red and black mountain cat is distinctive.

They mark their territory and when there's enough snow, allow us to ski there.
