Yep there were lots of FB posts yesterday saying they passed snow check and it's on. So there's no getting out of the Noram for me. Hopefully the relatively mild weather holds, polar fronts bite really hard at LL.

First womens DH of the season goes today at LL. All three training runs went off, most consistent were Lara Gut with 1st, 4th and 12th repsectively, and Jackie Wiles with 4th, 2nd and 6th. Off season injuries have really thinned out the field, only five of the top ten from last season are at this race.

I see some familiar names from BC and Alberta provincial teams as forerunners for this race, they'll stay on for the NorAm DH and SG next week and should have a running start with some solid mileage on the track.

That is taken from the restaurant at the top of Engelberg so it's not exactly backcountry.
My pic is more zoomed in and without the human standing on the ledge. Also without a "wow" from Tina Weirather.

We were talking about the saddle in between the two peaks that is obvious in the above pic, and how it looked great to ski.
Guide says "You want to ski it? I can arrange". I didn't know you could heli drops in The Alps, but in Engelberg it's possible.
Two days later he'd sorted out a heli and we were dropped off at the top.
    .
Reality was less pleasing. The top part was shit - hard breakable crust, unpleasant to ski. But the rest was good powder.

    Euro skiing is different.

Interesting results at LL womens DH with a cooling track and faster snow resulting in a first-time victory for Slovenian Ilka Stuhec. She started with bib 29! Second place Sofia Goggia wore bib 28. Lara Gut took 4th. Another DH today.

The first mens speed event (relocated to Val d'Isere from Beaver Creek) had familiar faces on the SG podium: Jansrud, Svindal, Paris. The DH is today, which is unusual. Normally they go straight from DH training days to DH race day/s. I'm guessing weather issues forced a switch to lower start. They would've had to mark and remove the DH gates for the SG set, then re-set the DH for today with the gates in exactly same locations - otherwise it's not the same course the athletes trained earlier in the week. Hmm, unless they set the SG on a completely separate track and the DH is sitting there waiting to go? Seems unlikely given the short notice they had after the US race was cancelled.

Some body cam video of the LL course shot by Apex club product Reece Howden who was forerunning for the womens training days. He's just 18 but a really big strong kid, definitely built for DH. He also races ski cross and has a gold medal from last season's Youth Olympic Games.

There's been a bit of editing because the video is 1:35 long yet the race times were in the area of 1:46. I'll see him up there next week for the noram and ask how his forerunner times compared to the womens WC field. The gopro wide lens tends to flatten perspective, because the flats to jump to steep transition at Tickety Chutes (0:30) is frickin terrifying in real life. They're doing ~100 km/h going in and 130 as they exit the section.

    she got 18th, looked ok
Haehlen had a nasty crash immediately before her run

Yes I saw her on the training runs results. Excellent result for a tech specialist first WC DH, although she probably ran a few DH courses during her junior and nor am years.

She raced lots as a youth. She went to Burke Mtn Academy in Vermont, which is a racing/academic program. And then she went through the usual progression of FIS races, NorAm series, national development team, etc. She just did it all at a younger age than most.

I should keep my bloody mouth shut, careless comments like this are obviously heard by the authorities. The first polar front of the winter arrived at LL half a day after I did and lasted the whole week. It was classic Canadian Rockies weather, windless sunny days and colder and colder with each passing day. Yesterday morning it was -34 C in the village at 7 am (the town of Banff surpassed its existing record for the date by one degree). The air was so dry I kept getting nosebleeds, three in one day. Snow was so dry it was almost like sandpaper, wax was useless. We pulled off the event nonetheless, the organisers are used to dealing with this sort of weather. I have an oversized jacket for such days that goes right over my normal ski jacket, plus down gloves, fur hat and so on. My toes took a beating though because I haven't had boot heaters since my instructing days. Got some angry red skin and blackening nail on both big toes. Standing in one place for 2-3 hours during the race is the culprit of course.

At a race you're on the chair well before open to the public. Early in the week we were loading at 7 am although it doesn't get light at this time of year until almost 8. Once the cold weather really set in, the resort moved back first load to 8 am because of safety concerns. That put us at the top of the mountain just as the first sun was hitting the peaks above Lake Louise itself. Gorgeous.

The race start, shot from below. The start itself an igloo-like white inflatable tent at the end of the black lateral fencing at centre. The natural snow cover is fairly thin so the maze down to the start scraped down to rocks due to the traffic. Every day the course crew would relocate the fences slightly to expose unused snow. Many of the athletes were hiking down the steep pitch to prevent damage to their race skis. When the race was on the early schedule, we had to ski this pitch in the dark, headlamp doesn't help much. No poles and a big backpack added to the fun.

I ran the B timer for two of the race days. Took a minute out during the run to get a shot of the timing room in action.

Another shot of Lake Louise and the Chateau. I'd guess they barely get an hour a day of direct sun at this time of year.

Womens GS in Courchevel cancelled due to strong winds. 19 had completed first rum before they called it off. Tried to run it later but conditions didn't improve.

Kristoffersen again very strong in the slalom in Madonna di Campiglio edging out Hirscher and the rest over 1 sec behind. This was a return to the scene of the drone crash from last year which very nearly fell on Hirscher.

Meanwhile Anna is still very cautious about her possible return. Currently training in Semmering and feels about 70%.

Anyone else enjoying skier-cross a little more these days as the fields start to contain more ex racers and it is becoming more GS/SG like and losing a little of the freestyle element?

If by 'losing the freestyle element' you mean that the athletes train on and off snow like alpine racers, then that element was gone at least 5 years ago. Virtually all skicross athletes went through a juvenile alpine program, most of them don't make the switch until they're somewhere in the 16-18 yr old range.

No, I meant the sets being more like a GS/SG and the skill level increasing.

I'm enjoying watching it more. :)

I think it will get even better when it's seen as a goal in itself, rather than as a way into the World Cup / Olympics for skiers that didn't make it as Alpine competitors.

Kids are now training SX whereas the current crop would have crossed over from Alpine.

I would expect as soon as this happens, and the Euros and Yanks figure out its easy medals, the Aussies wont get a look in. Not necessarily cause individual Aussies aren't good enough, its just difficult to compete with the team aspect of the sport.
Happens now in world cup, multiple coaches on course, intelligence being fed back to other skiers in the team, by early runners, you don't really stand a chance as an individual.

Translation is quite accurate but sounds more passionate in German . The no more, no less comment shows she will approach in a tentative manner but lets hope the bug bites hard again.
