Yeah, relief for sure. Was quite intense - even though he said it was much nicer to ski than he thought it would be.

Wonder how long he is going to keep doing that? I met him briefly when he was just starting on the national team summer training in Chile in 1993.

Innerhofer did really well for his second behind Mayer in the Super G. the course crew will be happy with the job they did on the Hausberg

Ready for the start of the Schladming night slalom a few minutes away - always a huge event. Dinner then back for the second run.

Huge crowd - the Tenne bar absolutely packed.
Henrik very impressive run, Marcel had a big mistake near the top but recovered but half a second down. Yule crashes on last gate and falls over the line but all legal.

Pressure on 5 of the Austrian team battling for the 3 remaining spots on the slalom team for St Moritz. Digruber has probably blown his chance skiing out.
Manuel Feller the best of them currently 11th, always on edge. Question is can he complete his 2nd run.

Been able to appreciate seeing more of the coverage being here than when at home streaming where I usually just tune in for the race or even day races here if I am skiing. Thomas Sykora has been doing the camera runs - I've always found slaloms mind boggling. I tried to run slalom gates once a long time ago - was completely lost. GS at least you can sort of get your head around.

They showed Hirscher preparing his run, talking through all 56 gates and the line variations. Amazing - but that is what it takes at this level. They also superimposed Henriks and Marcels runs and you could clearly see how much Marcel lost with that one mistake even though he quickly recovered. After that Henrik edged out just a little more.

Wow! what a finish. Marcel put in another great second run and Henrik actually went behind on the last intermediate check but got up to win by 0.09 sec! And wasn't he pumped with that!

Amazing. In Schladming apparently the big arch over the finish line has lights which shows red or green depending on the status of the intermediate time. Henrik in his interview said he glimpsed that the lights were red at the last check so he pushed a little harder at the end - just enough to get up and get green at the finish.

I think most of the world cups have this now Heinz. Impressive that he can take in that piece of info in the midst of the run and adjust the line to push harder.

The old saying was GS is the easiest course to run but the hardest to win. SL is a lot simpler to read when it's a training course and there's no outside gates set. Doesn't look quite so much like a forest then. The amazing part is the way the top athletes can take their observations of the terrain and the set during inspection, visualise the line needed for each gate separately and the course severally, and then put the whole thing together at race speed whilst adjusting for changes in weather, light, snow texture and ruts that may have developed. Hard to imagine we could develop computers that would be capable of anything comparable.

And dont those gates come oh so quickly. I love the cognitive intensity involved with SL. Oh to be young again.

We have a casual masters race group at Apex. One of our club dads was on the national and olympic teams in the 80s at the tail end of the Crazy Canucks era, and coaches on weekends for the club now. He gathers a group most Friday nights for two hours of gate bashing and technique work. I only make it there occasionally but it's a ton of fun and the guys don't get overly serious.

Zinal, Switzerland this week, the Swiss mens junior team checked in to my hotel. Suddenly there were about 60 new pairs of skis in the ski room and five ski techs busy drilling and waxing till late. There's an FIS event here this week.

Anyway, it was the GS and Slalom team and there wasn't a guy under six foot. Average about 6'2.
I thought elite ski racers were supposed to be short and chunky? Since when did lanky become a racer thing?

Parallel slalom on now from Stockholm. Actually more of a very short GS. A few missed gates in the Womens first round.

Not sure if this format should count for slalom points - quite different.

Parallel SL is certainly not the same as a normal SL. Basically impossible to set perfectly identical true SL courses complete with hairpins and flushes. What you get is dumbed down open SL, fairly rhythmic and mostly in the fall line. Somewhere between SL radius and GS simplicity, hence sometimes referred to as 'glalom'.

and makes for unpredictable results with both Hirscher & Kristoffersen going out in the first round!

    a bit like T20.

Big contrast in technique - Hargin smashes each gate with double fist, Ryding skis around them.

Chromecast sure makes longer vids on youtube easy. I watched most of the recent Wallabies matches that way. We cut our cable package down to bare bones basic plus HBO a few months ago because we get so much of our content now from Netflix and youtube.

Was watching Deer Valley moguls today. I have to say the womens wasn't very good to watch. The athletes have clearly been coached to play it very safe in the air. All the contenders are doing upright single followed by simple layout back. It's not hard to understand why, with 75% of marks being generated on the snow, but there's just not much variety in the field. Freestyle doesn't have much freedom any more!

PMG is right, it was awesome Britton Cox won another WC event. But the women are so super conservative it's not very good viewing. IMHO.
