Probably my favourite moment of racing in the last 10 years ( Didier Cuche--- der kannst nit umshmeisen--- der spinnt-- 2011 Kitzbuhel also a cracker) particularly if you understand the Austrian dialect. This video shows the passion and anxiety in the commentators.

    Yes, that run was awesome.

That was of course the race that was featured in the film 'Streif - one hell of a ride' which showed various skiers in the year leading up to that race in their preparation and how big winning the downhill in Kitzbühel is. In that film Hannes revealed that he skied that run in a fair amount of back pain. Two days later scans showed that a spinal disc had jumped out and he was operated on that day and ended that season.

Winning on the Streif is massive, especially so for Austrians. Armin Assinger certainly showed that in his fairly parochial commentary. I though much prefer Hans Knauss in the expert commentary role. Assignger was a racer in the 90's and these days hosts the Austrian version of the Million dollar show.

note no reference to female competitors
so: is Mikaela going to continue dominating?
are Wendy and Frida condemned to alternating second and third forever?
has Anna managed a comeback or is it too late?
is Aussie Tess due for a breakthrough?
    Viktoria? Tina? Sofia? Petra?
    any others coming through?
will there ever be a more glorious name than Ragnhild Mowinckel?

There was this piece from Anna last week. https://sport.orf.at/stories/3013462/
She has had her first pain free summer training for a few years and is feeling good. She will be concentrating on GS and Super-G this season and looking for greater consistency especially in her favorite discipline of GS.

I’m not up with ski racing. Perhaps a naive question but is it on telly at all? I’d like to check out the rounds that are being held where we will be this December/January.

In Australia I believe the English Eurosport coverage is shown on Fox. I subscribe to Austrian TV online during the race season.
Where exactly were you heading in Dec/Jan? Best coverage is in Austria where ALL World cup races are shown live on FTA TV (ORF1 or 2). You should get coverage in the other Euro countries as well, though not sure if all races are shown live.

European races are normally scheduled somewhere around 9-10am local time, with 2nd run for technical events around 1pm. There are also a few night races.
Biggest event of the season is the Kitzbühel downhill in January where you get 50K+ people attending. The night slalom in Schladming a few days later gets similar numbers.

Have a look at last years thread for more on this.

I'd also like to see how Ester Ledecka would do if she was on the ski WC circuit full time. I doesn't sound like it'll happen, but the events she is in will be worth watching.

We’ll be in Kitz and Val Gardena but not at the time of the races. Would be nice to check Val Gardena out before we get there and ski at Kitz so we can get a feel for it when we watch it back in Oz.

Uninspiring course for WC, one mid-run pitch with extensive flats above and below. I guess you get what you get with glacier skiing. They turn it into a party for season opener so who cares.

Stream Austrian TV ORF1. They show all the races and have the best coverage and commentary (though only in German of course).
I've always used this site https://schoener-fernsehen.com/html5/stream/ORF1 which is subscription based which reminds me it is almost time to sign up for another 6 months for the ski season.

Here also https://tvthek.orf.at/live I think it is free for a certain period then requires subscription. Some sites also only allow access from Austria.

Sofia Goggia has fractured her ankle in training so will likely miss the first half of the season. :(
Hoping to get back sometime in January in time for the world championships in February.

Three wins available at her favourite track, Lake Louise. She was off her game there last season, but that course suits her so well.

Prize money for Kitzbühel announced - same as last 2 seasons. €550,000 all up for the week, but that is shared between the top 30 of the 3 races. So winner of the downhill gets just €74,000 which given the huge prestige of the event isn't that much. Especially if you compare to tennis, golf etc. It really is all about the glory itself, though of course sponsorship deals will come in as well.

Heavy snow forecast for Soelden on Sat into Sunday. Winds generaly light but will make for some conservative runs on the first calender event.

Doesn't look good at all - at least not for ski racing. 50cm forecast for Saturday, wind and fog on Sunday. Could be a repeat of last years cancellation :(

    still, there’s a result
    1 Worley
    2 Brignone
    3 Shiffrin
I tried using Heinz’ link to ORF1 above, but by the time it logged in the race was over
so I watched it live on youtube - somebody had a camera pointing at a lappy screen showing eurosport
    low-grade but it worked

I posted one option earlier in this thread which I have been using for years. Only issue is that it is in German - maybe good for your preparation? Otherwise there are a few dodgy streams about you can try and a few do appear on youtube.
But if you really want the full experience though you could always get yourself to Schladming on Jan29 and join around 50k people for the night slalom.

The biggest week on the World cup calendar is the one late January with the Kitzbühel downhill and slalom followed by the the Schladming night slalom. I posted a few youtube videos of the Schladming event in last years thread here.

Yes thanks to you I have seen the videos and watched last years Kitzbuhel down hill . Very disappointed the Fox/Eurosport didn't show it. This year I'm hoping to see more of it.. with my new Tv box thingy. Just need to work out how to use it..lol
