and again - clock failed to stop for both Swiss skiers. And in Switzerland - hard to believe.

bizarre. Clock fails to stop for a 3rd time and again it is a Swiss skier. Causing big delays as they try to fix the timing.

Some disquiet in the Austrian camp over the timing debacle in Crans-Montana. Clock failed to stop for 4 skiers at the finish line which by amazing coincidence were all Swiss. Their results were later judged by backup hand timing with 2 of those ending up being the 2nd and 3rd placings. Lara Gut's time was original assessed as 4th, but was later adjusted to 3rd. Goggia's winning time at least was clear. Schmidhofer though who thought she had 3rd ended up 4th.

Rather embarrassing for Swiss timing in Switzerland especially. They said problem was the link from the finish line sensors.

Wow. Marcel almost skis out but just recovers, but not quite enough and finishes 0.04s behind Henrik.

Austrian team were successful in the protest on the timing debacle in Crans Montana. The times for Gut and Hählen were re-adjusted which meant after correction that Schmidhofer got 2nd rather than 4th - a significant 30 pt difference - giving her a 90pt lead in the downhill standings rather than 60 pts. Apparently they subtracted 0.13s from the manual timing rather than adding.

Swiss timing said that part of the problem was that the photo sensors on the finish line were mounted too high.

So we’re at the Atomic stand at the ski test, a nice guy heard our accents and started chatting, he’s married to an Aussie had has spent plenty of time in Melbourne, turns out we’ve got a few mutual ski friends. He mentioned that he was on the WC DH circuit and shared coachin / servicemen with Craig Branch and Jono Brauer, they called themself Team Commonwealth. He casually mentioned he did a bit of commentating for Eurosport, with no idea at all that we are total nuffies and watch as many races as we can, he couldn’t quite believe it when we told him that we watched every race in Are etc! Anyway his name is Finlay Mickel and he does the special comments alongside the annoying commentator.

yep, Finlay provides quite useful comments
I actually don’t mind the other guy
at Åre we had the Canadian, Peter Graves doing the English on the live commentary team - he was ok too
I guess I’m not very discriminating

Just went for a ski with Finlay, always great to watch how World Cup skiers accelerate where mortals brake. There’s a clip of him skiing behind me, I was carving, he had to throw in some short turns to stay behind. Also filmed a couple of cool stories about the Wengen DH.

FIS moguls wrapped up for the season on the weekend. The final events were held in Shymbulak, Kazakhstan although the dual moguls scheduled for yesterday were cancelled due to heavy snowfall.
Mikael Kingsbury won the men's title for the year and Perrine Laffont won the women's. Australia's Jakarta Anthony came third but didn't compete in Shymbulak. Is Britt Cox still competing or was she out with injury?
Kingsbury and Horishima have both now landed quad corks in competition.

Surely Kingsbury is GOAT now in mens moguls. 53 wins puts him 25 clear of next best in the wins tally. Plus seven medals at worlds and gold and silver at Olympics. And he is only 26...

Being at Womad last night wasn't able to watch the race from Kranjska Gora.
Henrik won it, while Marcel only managed 6th but that was enough to secure his 8th overall title!

Puchner won the final DH race, but Schmidi wins the DH title ahead of Venier & Siebenhofer.

Austrian womens downhill team dominated World cup season - 4 different winners and top 3 overall. Just nothing to show for it in the world championships.

Eurosport programming seems to have overlooked the women’s slalom
I’m hoping they’ve misnamed it as the giant slalom
maybe they think no-one wants to watch it because Mikaela will probably win
in the event that she wins two in Andorra, that’s 60 WC wins

But now that the season's over, who's the GOAT?

So many ways to cut that cake... the wiki page has some interesting stats:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIS_Alpine_Ski_World_Cup#Rules

Purely on win stats it's Stenmark and Vonn with 86 and 82 respectively.

But what about world cup titles? Stenmark a two-trick pony (even so, 3 WC titles)?

    certainly she’s dominant and consistent
she turned 24 this week so she has a bit of time

The combined rankings in the referenced Wiki article say it's Hirscher and Vonn. I didn't look into how they weighted worlds, Olympics etc. You could get different results depending on how you assigned points to the various titles won.

Probably no value given to the sheer speed with which Shiffrin has scored her wins. Only 6 seasons on the circuit and she's about to move into second on the most WC wins table.

in other news, the ladies GS at Soldeu will be the last race for Frida Hansdotter
Frida is not a front-rank winner, only 4WCs
though she has 31 other podium finishes
she bagged a gold at Pyeongchang
she’s hugely popular in Sweden, well-known for being personable and approachable
she put in a big effort at the world championships
Mikaela spoke warmly in her post-slalom interview of how she used to see Frida et al on the podium and dream of achieving that
she said something similar at Åre about Lindsey
