Ah. The economics of flights and flying. I wishI could understand it. From an outsiders point of view it largely seems like luck and avoiding certain peak times. But......

This. I used the above features of skyscanner to get my fares. But the day before it was $1400.

Daily direct flights between Tokyo and Perth

WA’s struggling tourism industry has been given a big boost with the confirmation of a daily direct flight from Tokyo to Perth by Japan’s trendsetting seven-star airline, All Nippon Airways.

The announcement, to be made this morning, of a daily Boeing 787 service from September 1 is a vote of confidence by ANA and flags WA as a major tourism destination to other airlines in India and China considering services.

WA Tourism Minister Paul Papalia told The West Australian that “securing a direct air link between Perth and Tokyo is a massive win for the State, which will bring more Japanese visitors to WA and help us grow this important market”.

Boeing studies show that when a new direct service is introduced, traffic trebles. It is estimated that over three years, the new service will bring about 76,000 extra visitors from Japan to Perth, providing a $175 million boost to the State’s economy and creating hundreds of jobs.

The deal was sealed after Mr Papalia, with Tourism WA, Tourism Australia and Perth Airport representatives, travelled to Japan last year to pitch for a direct flight.

ANA executives visited Perth in August to cement the deal.

Senior vice-president Seiichi Takahashi said the airline was “excited to add Perth to our list of world-class destinations and happy to be collaborating with Tourism WA, Perth Airport and Tourism Australia”.

“The city is celebrated worldwide as a tourist destination and economic hub, and we look forward to making it easier to travel between Tokyo and Perth,” he said.

Perth Airport chief executive Kevin Brown said the new service “will deliver a windfall gain for tourism and the broader WA economy”. “More than 60 per cent of the world’s population lives on our doorstep in Asia and Perth is closer than Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney to 17 of Asia’s top 20 most populated cities,” he said.

“That’s the enormous potential WA needs to tap into and this new flight is the latest evidence we’re having an impact.”

Luke Chittock, of Amity Travel, said the flight was “going to be very exciting”. “The outbound demand is there, not just for winter skiing,” he said.

“People are hooked on nonstop flights and Japan is such an amazing place. There is also great potential for good through fares to the US and Europe.”

Qantas withdrew its three-times-a-week Boeing 767 service to Tokyo route in 2011.

ANA’s daily Tokyo Narita airport-Perth service will depart Tokyo at 11.10am and arrive in Perth at 8.15pm. The return flight departs at 9.45pm, arriving in Tokyo at 8.25am.

The airline will operate a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that has 184 seats comprising 32 business class flatbeds, 14 premium economy and 138 economy seats.

That's pretty nice, around 10 hours each way shaves a few hours off the fastest single hop flights. There'll be a collective holding of breath to see if the cost will be reasonable.

Having done that route years ago when Qantas flew it, unless we were skiing Honshu it worked out better, easier, quicker and less frustrating to do the Cathay Via HK.

It will be awesome for RWC, and anyone wanting to go to Tokyo first. I’d be seriously considering combining this with the train to Sapporo for January - avoid flight interruptions due to epic storms.

Sadly my northern hemisphere winters have been allocated until 2020/2021. Hope it last that long...!

What? You think it’ll be cheap as chips to come TO Perth and exxy to Tokyo? Price will run at whatever the market will tolerate, be that Japanese customers or gaijin.

Personally I’d love to see WA tourism getting a boost from Japanese inbound tourism. We’ve got lovely hikes - bib track anyone? Abundant wildlife parks for up close and personal pat the wombat experiences. Fantastic wineries and craft beer brewing, and some damn fine eateries. Not to mention the beaches.

Like any airline booking, if you book early it will be cheaper, and it may be reasonable. It will still cost more than the alternative one stop flight

When I booked in April I could not get a seat on the JAL direct flights for the days I needed. To get into Tokyo in the morning and get a reasonable price i had to go Malaysian via KL not my favorite choice but it was the only one. I don't want to spend a night in Tokyo every other fight did not get in until late PM.

PB and I booked our Japan return flights as part of a mega booking session on the phone with Qantas when double status points were out a few months back. All multiple leg combo flights that were tricky to book online.

On NYE we were going through all our bookings double checking and PB had his JL flight Sapporo to Tokyo appear on his Q App, but I didn’t... weird.

I got him to call and check what the go was - turns out (according to Qantas) that although we had booked and paid JAL took “too long” to issue the ticket so it cancelled the booking. All rebooked now (at no extra cost to us).

    Phew!
Hope we still get the double points on that flight.

Flew from Melbourne to Narita last night on JAL in business class on a Dreamliner. It was a 12.45am departure, so I slept about 7 hrs in a very comfortable lie flat seat bed. They supplied some sort of mattress pad which added to the comfort. Had the Japanese breakky set with nice coffee. All in all I was very happy.

Flew JL 772 yesterday on the 787-9, very nice plane and it wasn't very full, wife chose to acquire a row of 4.

Also had the quickest check-in, arrived at the train station at 7:43, was at the gate at 8:15, including a trs claim as well.

Direct flights between Perth and Narita are now available to book. The cost is around $1450 for flights in January next year.

Hoping someone may be able to help. Has anyone booked one way tickets jetstar and one way back Tokyo to Australia. Jetstar has a really good price going over But since we want to return in Feb and prices are not out yet cannot book a return flight, tempted to book to flight one way out and later the return flight.

Buy the flight then. Worry about the rest later.
Out of interests sake whats the price?
IMO anything over 700 return for Jetstar isn't worth doing

Singapore seem to have regular sales with very good prices. I’m in Adelaide so there aren’t any direct flights from here anyway.

I recently bought flights to Tokyo for late January 2020 for $740 return.

When I was looking at flights for my trip last January, the problem with Jetstar was that there weren't any direct flights from Sydney, they all went via GC or Cairns, and they were all daytime flights meaning wasted nights in Tokyo and less days skiing. Other options included 2am transits in Singapore or Jakarta - yeah, nah.

As it was, I flew QF and spent a couple of hundred more, but I left home at 6.30pm and was skiing by 12.30 the next day. I had the opportunity for a ski on the morning that I left as well though I figured if I tried that then Murphy's law would mean I'd miss my flight home.

Booked flights Perth to Tokyo $1,150 with Garuda in January. I was about to book with Malaysia for $900 but only 20kg total baggage allowance. Beware when booking. If I take my skis and boots I will be well over. garuda allows 30kg of normal luggage plus ski gear.

We are (finally!) about to bite the bullet on our first trip to Japan. Any tips on excess luggage fees? I’m trying to decide between JAL vs ANA - both have similar prices for similar dates, but I’m not sure if there’s a catch lurking in the baggage fees.

We only need to take one snowboard bag. We are fine overall for number of items and weight, but the snowboard bag is going to exceed the 290cm total length rule. Both airline websites seem to say it’s Y20,000 extra for that one bag. Am I reading that correctly? I recall reading horror stories about Japanese airlines and excess baggage charges.

Outbound from Australia it won't be an issue. The return portion, however, can be sucky depending on where you leave from, because rules are there to be followed. I've had my ski bags measured a few, but not all, times. I find leaving from Chitose is more lax than from Tokyo. If you are indeed flying from Chitose (and you're getting a connecting flight from Tokyo), try and get your luggage checked through to the final destination.
Or get a smaller snowboard bag?

8 trips on multiple airlines and the only issue I've had was on Qantas domestic leg.

Last trip on JAL was two large snowboard bags. Three suitcases plus an additional full of Japanese alcohol. For three people.
    JAL didn't bat a eyelid.

What's your point of departure? And destination.
