Yep, so am I. I'm returning to work at the start of the academic year for a week, then taking LSL from 31st Jan for a couple weeks. Heading out on Singapore air via Changi. Stopover of 9 hours. I'll just check into a transit hotel there for a few hours and have a kip. Then on to Tokyo. Way cheaper for that time of year compared to other carriers.

When my son got to school age I had every intention of taking him out of school for overseas trips and did so when he was in Kindergarten. The school was supportive. They provided us with a pack of work for him to do and encouraged him to keep a scrap book and go through it with the class when he got back.

We have not done it since. While I had absolutely no problem taking him out of school the real world hit. With both parents working he needs to go to vacation care for the school holidays. Cost is between $65 and $100 per day (some things he does get a rebate but some don't) and to be honest it gets pretty boring and repetitive after a while. With only 4 weeks of holidays each we have to use them carefully to be able to attend all the events he gets involved in as well as give us a holiday together. So while we would much prefer to take him out of school and go on family holidays in Feb/March when travelling is cheaper, the hills are less busy and the snow pack is established it just makes life overall make more sense to travel in Dec/Jan thus saving on vacation care costs, taking holidays while both my husband and my businesses are quietest (thus its much easier to get leave as both businesses have compulsory leave periods between Christmas and New Year) and saving that couple of days of precious leave by using public holidays.

Melbourne to Osaka is available between Jan and March

Would be even better if you could fly in to Osaka and back from Tokyo. :D

It’s been a while since I’ve flown to japan and I am thinking of pulling the trigger in AUD 1,100 something Jetstar flight tickets Gold Coast-Narita (with 30kg checked in)
I’d much rather prefer Brisbane -Narita but the only direct option is with qantas for 1,400
    Sth...

Which brings me to my question ...
Is AUD 1,100 an average price ? Should I hold out still for possible deals?

I’m planning on travelling 26 or 27 January to 7 feb

    The total 2 adults(that'a a 13yo and me) and the 10yo around $6500 I think
Seats are shellback so you can recline without annoying the punter behind you
I think the adult price was @2450 return
That price you quoted GC-Tokyo with J* is pretty good for January return
Any return economy flight in Jan is usually @$1000
I flew J* ex GC for years but I can't do it anymore
It's a terrible product, but if you're flying alone and can get an exit row it's just tolerable

I got a late January flight for around $750 return but I booked months ago. Once I knew the dates and the price I wanted I just kept logging onto the airline websites and pulled the trigger once away once I saw the great price. Of course now what I've gained in flight savings I'm losing in exchange rate :(

That's not an amazing price IMO, especially for sh*tstar. I've traveled with them return Melb-Narita for $650-$700 with bags multiple times. But refuse to use Jet* anymore, just such a terrible service.

Did you see the 'return flight for free' promo that was on earlier this week? Could of snagged a great deal via Cairns for under $600 return

Found some decent value ex-perth with Singapore Airlines, base fare was $924 for the 13-14 hour via Changi. Leaving Perth Saturday evening and Tokyo on a Monday morning at 11am. All very civil times and prime dates, I usually come back on the Sunday but there was a decent chunk of cash to be saved leaving on the Monday.

Applied a stack of points via Velocity rewards. Pretty happy.

If you put in the same details for Virgin Australia, you get a base fare of $869 (also via Singapore Airlines)

That's only one way. I've checked Virgin a bunch of times before finalising the booking. You did make me sweat there for a few minutes though.

Not sure if this has been posted before, or if this is brand new by Qantas:

Sydney to Sapporo. Three seasonal direct flights per week (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday) between 16 December 2019 and 28 March 2020.

    Yep.
I’ve booked 31/12 from Perth to get in 1/1
And back on the last one out 28/3.
    Stoked!

Just a shame it’s only during ski season.
Hope it becomes a regular route.

If you look further back (or in another thread), both Qantas & Virgin have taken two new slots at Haneda Airport (one each)....
Most likely, Qantas will switch the direct Melbourne to Narita flight, to Melbourne to Haneda, and Virgin likely to start flights out of Brisbane to Haneda.

Qantas want two slots Hnd to Syd.
They are retiring the 747 and moving into a 787 on that route.
They'd love to have a A380 on it. However they don't have permission .
Hnd -Syd is an incredibly popular flight.

Yeah i saw that, the trouble is the last 3 flights I've booked, Qantas is $200 to $300 more expensive than JAL for the same day, to add to that I've found JAL has heaps more leg room and better service, plus it gets in am so you can get on with the day instead of having to stay in Tokyo the first night.

JAL will be flying to Haneda from march (moving on from NRT). I'd imagine the prices will be the same between ANA , QF and JAL.

JAL, ANA and QF will be all flying direct from Sydney to Haneda from march.
No more cheap flights on JAL to NRT

    Daaaamn.

Ideal scenario for me would be to somehow finagle a JAL flight outbound and a QF flight home, so that I am flying at night both ways.

    Ahh my news was incomplete.
I heard. "JAL are stopping their Melbourne Narita flights".

Which they are turning into a Haneda flight.
    Unsure of frequency.

This is what I was referring to the other day.
Makes it a whole lot easier for me.
I booked a cheap ($280) Melbourne to Narita flight back to Japan in May, and I was hoping they change it to Haneda
