They seem to be pushing hard the change from Narita to Haneda for flights from Melbourne - is this as big a deal as they want it to seem, or is it a bit more of a trade off, a win for some and a loss for others?

I've only ever flown into and out of Japan at KIX, but have flow from Haneda to Kochi as a domestic flight.

Saw yesterday that direct Melb - Tokyo was being spruiked, I thought it was a new or increased service - is it just a terminal change?

Also that the new Sydney - Chitose direct flight is going to continue during ski season next year 20/21. If it’s good this season, I may get on it again next season.

IIRC Qantas is a terminal change from Narita to Haneda, along with Virgin adding a new route from Brisbane to Haneda? These are the two newly available landing slots that were discussed previously, with Qantas asking for both, and Virgin asking for one.

    Advantages:
    - Between 470-600yen train to Tokyo Station (Narita to Tokyo station, 2600-2900yen)
    - About 35min train to Tokyo Station (Narita to Tokyo station, 55-60min)
    - Taxi is about 5500yen, vs Narita is about 25,000-30,000yen (Tokyo Station)
    - Most domestic flights are out of Haneda, not Narita
    - Haneda has no curfew, but Narita does. (I've gotten stuck at Narita on a delayed evening flight.)
    - Early flights out of Haneda can be done with taxi from Tokyo, while Narita usually requires staying near the airport, due to train start times in the morning + expensive taxi fares.
    - The international terminal is newer, more efficient and the layout is much better than Narita.

    Disadvantages:
    - If you've already booked transfers from Narita or hotels near Narita, you'll need to change them.
    - If you fly with Jetstar or JAL into Narita, and you've booked ongoing domestic flights out of Narita, you'll need a ground transfer from Haneda.

I'm one of the anomalies that doesn't actually enjoy Tokyo that much (I prefer Kyoto, or even Osaka), so the main benefit potential of different airports is how quickly I can get from there to the snowfields. :D

You've probably just been to the tourist traps of Tokyo..... Ginza, Toyko Tower for example

    We were
We stayed in Asakusa while we were in Tokyo. We visited Ueno and Shinjuku, but not much else - we aren't really big city people generally, and when travelling with a 2 year old (as we were) the places we wanted to see changed.

    Not a new service

A terminal change, the Qantas announcement said all those currently booked on a MEL to NRT are now MEL to HND.But not until end of March.

So still have this season to go to NRT.

    https://www.qantas.com/au/en/qantas...-lounge-locations.html/hnd/Sakura Lounge.html

There's also a new Delta Skymiles lounge opening about mid 2020. It seems that Delta will be ditching Narita and using Haneda exclusively very soon. The Delta flights I've used have mainly flown out of Haneda

I'd offer that if you were planning on staying in Ueno and travelling via shinkansen , Narita makes sense .

Lounges are overrated unless you're in transit.
They let all the plebs in nowadays.

I'm confused. Are you saying the Sakura Lounge at Narita is crap or at Haneda ?
If it's the one at Narita I quite like it. I must be one if those plebs Donzah mentioned. :)

The Sakura lounge is crap at Haneda. Australian domestic club lounge is better than Haneda Sakura lounge

The Qantas Lounge (wasn't JAL/Sakura was actually qantas owned lounge) at Narita was better.

Having a shower before a long over nighter is a great idea. Anyone have a idea where that can be had at Narita 2?
Will put that on our to do list..
I found the details, I should have looked first..;)

That's not transit lol. Merely a domestic stop...
I was thinking more of the four hours I've got to kill in HK airport .
Which shouldn't be too difficult. Changi was pretty easy in that regard.

Connecting flights have an ridiculously long time in Japan!

    It's infuriated me no end.

Mind you I accidentally booked my flights for Jan with only an hour and 20mins... not sure travel insurance will even cover that. Must try and change it.

wont be fine... luggage not booked through QF flight closes 90mins prior to departure (even for business class!) so closes before i land.

The Visit Japan pass is nonchangeable grrr. so have to buy a new one. only $150 but annoying (annoyed at myself).

    Cheapest is $68aud I've found .
So many airlines fly that route

With JAL? on Saturday 25th? Even sky scanner say the cheapest is the same amount.

I wont fly poostar or peach or blah... need the luggage allowance.

Have to check my ski boots on poostar - JAL dont weigh my carry on.

That’d be why PB is struggling for decent flights back to Chitose from Austria!

I did tell PB it was mental to go from Niseko to Austria for 5 days skiing - he will lose more ski days in transit than he gets there!! But “mates trip”. They’re fair weather skiers and didn’t want to risk bleak January Niseko to come to us. Hope it pukes down in Austria LOL So he has a flight OUT, but nothing back  this is gonna be interesting... <sits back with an I told ya so Vibe>

Is that because they will be solidly booked?
We are travelling 25th Jan Nagano to Kanazawa and then 26th Jan Kanazawa to Nagano. Usually we just buy the tickets at the train station at the time. Should I book before hand?

Skymark. They have cheap excess baggage... like a 1000yen per 10kg (above the allowance of 20kg), up to 100kg!!
Must check in 20min before departure!!

Grrr I wrote a whole post and thought it posted.

I found the carry on but the flights times are crap! Ideally I would like 6pm.

I was thinking of training it to Sapporo and shopping before heading to the airport. So would like to maximise the time in Sapporo rather than the lounge at haneda!

I take Zolpidem (aka Stilnox), which appears to be similar. I have 10mg tabs and 1/2 will give me 5 hours sleep (I'm pretty small). No after effects and I can be woken if required, though I might not remember it.

They do say no alcohol. But I have had a glass of wine and been OK. Stilnox has a reputation for people sleep walking, eating and driving. I've used it intermittently for insomnia and travel for 10+ years without a problem. Try one at home first to see how you react.
