in an email from falls creek this morning (and I assume Hotham are doing the same thing)

And in regard to our Season Pass offers for 2012, good things come to those who wait, so hang tight as our upcoming season pass deals will soon be posted for our loyal fans.

2011 Early bird WAS $1,199

My guess is $899 for this year perhaps, but what makes the Perisher pass a killer is

5 x 15% discounted lift tickets
15% off food/drinks at resort owned food venues
$60 for unlimited ski-tube/gate entry

i'll predict (complete guess)
they match perisher on price
less (meaningful) extras
maybe only open to current season pass holders
no guarantee for 2013

The two resorts are different, competing against the other purely on price is only undercutting oneself.

Perisher deal:
Adults Season Pass $699 deposit $199 now and pay balance in May 2012
Students Season Pass $399 deposit $99 and pay balance in May 2012

Price locked in for 2013 as well!

I also like the 15% discount on resort owned food & bev outlets
wink.gif

Hotham would be nuts if they didn't match this!

Its only two hours further drive for us on easier roads to Perisher..........................

I can do My house to Jindy Flying (MEL-CBR) in 6.5 hours with a fair bit of time (safety) spent at the airport.

For me if I drove Melbourne to Bright it's about 4 hours..... but it leaves me at the base of Hotham, with quite a "challenging' drive on foggy/snowy days. Added to that Hotham is quite small compared to Perisher, but at the same time Hotham has more advanced terrain, but I am not interested in hiking and that. So Perisher suits me fine.

Jindy to the SkiTube is SO easy and the accomodation that I'll stay in is like a 5 min drive to the Ski Tube.

I have done a VERY in-depth comparison of spending 6 x 3 day weekends at both Perisher and Mt Buller and the cost difference for me is VERY minimal.

Will post that when I add in a few more comparisons of which includes Hotham, as this IS the Hotham forum!

What p's me off about Hotham is that due to wind or poor cover you can rock up often enough to find The Drift and the Orchard closed - decent sized areas I like to ski - and you still pay $106 for a day ticket.

Have only once gone north of the border and the amount and height of terrain at Thredbo for the same money was far far better.

(So what route do you take to get from Melb to Jindy/Perisher in 6 hours?).

A quick whereis search says Melbourne to Jindy via Coryong and Thredbo will take 6h 41m. Not if there's snow!
Second quickest via Bairnsdale and Cann River at 7h 41.
Third is via Tumut at 7h 57m
And last at 8h 40m is via Canberra.

When the Orchard is closed the resort is tiny really, and its only open for a few weeks in the season.

Perisher is flatter, I get that, but I'll probably snap up a Thredbo pass as well so that I can ski both.

Leave home 3pm
Arrive Airport 4pm
Flight at 6pm
Arrive Canberra 6:50pm
Luggage/Car 7:10pm
Arrive Jindy 9:30pm

Could leave home later at say 4pm but I prefer to avoid peak hour to/from the airport on a Friday and I can happily sit there and drink/relax before the the flight.

For a family it's cost prohibitive but for 1 or 2 people it's not bad

Flights can be found for $69 each way during sale fares on both Qantas and Virgin

Sorry.

Took me 3.5 hours Mt Beauty - Thredbo via Alpine Way in a Subie with a stop for coffee.

Still worth it; T. was an eye-opener.

Leaving Melbourne is the big factor - it can take >> hr to drive from the southern suburbs through to north & slow/painfull at peak hr - ESP Friday pm - which discourages any venture north. But as a rule we allow a whole day for Melbourne-Jindy where as hotham/falls are manageable after work (5pm).
Oh for a 130kmh limit on Hume & completed roadworks on ring road.

And Barry Way via Buchan (~8hr) worth a try for Mel SE burbs to Jindy accom, if not worried about 100 km fast gravel windy road & some drop offs.

Well now he gets a cheap season pass, but doesn't change the price of food at Zirky's or the slow skiing zones or anything else really..... that he went on about.

Well, just got off the phone to Mt Buller and they didn't know that this had happened. The fella said they are figuring out what they want to do for next year and to watch the website in the next 3-4 days....hmmm. They would want to come at it quick because Hotham and Falls are much more achievable for us in Vic!

And with the Govt subsidised bus from Bright to Hoth at $15 return trip means a day trip to Hotham only needs a drive up the freeway to Bright which takes 3.5 hrs.
Buller better come up with something decent.

Not sure what you expect from a phone monkey

You'd be lucky if they knew what day it was, let alone anything Management had planned

I seem to be about the only one who knows about the Bus its half empty most times and its only a mini bus.
Put $15 fuel in the car and drive from Bright up to Hotham and back to Bright
How ever much fuel you have left is all you save driving to Hotham from Bright.

Its 3.5 hours from my place to the lift at Buller.
3.5 hours to Bright and sleep on the bus.
