"Happy New Year Folks. Always nice to start the New Year with some new snow, where we have a mostly clear and calm morning here in Niseko and 17-20cm of new from base lifts to upper mountain," says SkiJapan.com's snow reporter Rod White.

"New Years Eve was a cracker here with plenty of fireworks and Powder to sink your boards into. Gate 5 was a standout for the morning program with deep dry plumage in the paddocks and trees.

"Current conditions are generally pretty calm with temps at base of minus 7C and 12C below zero at top. Jet stream is from the NNW calm -5km down low and variable 15-25k up high.

"We may see a few random pulses of crystal pass through our region mid morning and then further sustained snowfall is forecast for later tonight, continuing into early Saturday.

"The further outlook at this stage has a somewhat sedate Sunday Monday on approach followed by this next wave of systems we've been keeping an eye on out west in central Russia that should see barometric pressure drop significantly later on Monday night - then snow for about a week. Bring it on !"
