We had a near perfect day in the Tokachi mountains 2 days ago. Lucked out after a dawn start and summited to a perfect blue sky above an "Unkai" (sea of cloud). The alpine terrain was also in good condition as there had been little wind up high, which is not always the case.

Was there a few days back, was surprised how sketchy the cover was down low. Especially compared to cover at Furano. Also hit my first rocks of the Japanese trip.

Went for the evening wander in Tomamu after a swim and Onsen. Had a very nice meal at the Italian restaurant, Altezza. Lines at other restaurants but nobody else at Altezza. MissBoof is PITA vegan and even she was happy with the build your own pasta option. Highly recommend.

MrsBoof getting some action at Tomamu. Day 3 today and the hotel is much quieter with the weekenders mostly cleared out but there wasn’t much competition for the good stuff so looking forward to some mid week skiing.

we’ve had fun but could definitely do with some fresh snow though. The good stuff has received a lot of traffic today and it was much harder to find some untracked.

Number 1 son and friend today on piste at Tomamu. So much powder onpiste no need to hunt the side country. Furano and Kamui all good light powder to be found but from reports high winds did pack up the snow in the Tokachi Mts and Asahi Dake.

A great first day at Furano. Shots taken inbound at premium zone. Had an amazing run out the A gate in the arvo but the run out all the way to the bottom is a leg killer

A big thank you to @telenomore, alpine back country and Harros for getting my skis sorted.
Nothing available in Tomamu so skis Black Catted to ABC and then passed on to Harros.

Looking at a cheeky last minute 5-7 day trip to Furano and/or Tomamu area can do the following weeks. 18th & 25th Feb and 4th March. Any of these weeks bad due to holidays, events or particularly good/quiet?

@Born2skii Sorry we don't. I'd go to Homac, across the bridge on your left. Thats where the locals shop. Also maybe try SportPia, at the base of the Kita Gondola. Harros may also have them but I don't think so.

Can anybody advise some transfer options from Furano to Club Med Sahoro please.
Reception here has said taxi but that’s pricey and not sure how a taxi will manage a couple of 2 metre ski bags.
Another option is to catch the bus all the way back to Chitose and then catch one of the Club Med buses which I think is free but not sure. Cheaper but a long haul.
    Any other options?
    Cheers

If you get stuck I just spotted a big rack of gloves for small people out at Bestom (15mins drive on the road to Asahikawa).
The Nepalese curry restaurant at the entrance is worth the trip even if you don't need any gloves.

Half day rental of a van from Toyota (one way surcharge) is about 20,000 yen.

1100yen each from Furano train station to Sahoro. Train then transfer by bus. Hotel wasn’t helpful so we went for a trip to Furano Tourism Centre for info

    Winner!

Many years ago I was told by a major Australian ski related travel agent that the only way to get from Niseko to Furano was a taxi. You can imagine the cost.

That was the first and last time I even bothered with an agent.

Mmm. Club Med experience Arrived at Sahoro at lunch time. Jury is out at the moment as It’s a bit of an assault on these senses here. Unfortunately, very light on for snow so probably no more powder for me this year.

    Hi all,
I'm struggling to find a site that has good information on snow conditions in Furano. Most sites seem to have snowfall predictions, but that's about it. Any suggestions?

So the 2 cents predicted above turned into a pleasant 10-15cms for Tomamu. JMA readings for Shimukappu-Mura showed 13 cms from 2pm yesterday afternoon through to 8am this morning. I would guess, that there was a little more up the top. Was a fun morning and the sun even came out. Looking forward to another top up. We are off to see what Furano is all about for the first time tomorrow

    Hey Guys,
We are currently @ Asahidake & one of our group has left his snowboard boots in Niseko. Does anyone know of any hire shops close by or know anyone heading up this way tomorrow morning?
    Cheers

I have done the exact same thing on a previous trip. I left my boots in a wardrobe at a hotel in Sapporo and flew to a pension in a resort on Honshu. I rang the hotel in Sapporo and they sent the boots via takkyubin. Arrived in 2 days. I'd ring and see if they can send via Takkyubin.

Closest hire shop would probably be Furano, although there must also be something in Asahikawa. You could trying ringing Harro's - http://www.harrosnowsports.com.au/locations.htm#Japan

I guess if you paid over the phone by credit card (assuming they accept credit card) they could rent you some boots and send them up in a taxi. Taxi fare would be in the region of 20,000 yen

Whether they would be prepared to organise that is unknown.

Otherwise it's an hour drive to Furano so you could get down to Furano and be back at Asahidake well before lunch.

Aha in the onsen village complete with bear in the foyer. There were starting to be some outdoors shops in the farming village, you might stop there on the way out to Asahikawa or Furano, you never know your luck.

It was a cold, blue sky morning in Furano complete with the famous "diamond dust".

Unfortunately the cold had iced up the lens on my webcam and I couldn't get it to focus so I pointed it into the morning sun for 30 mins to defrost but by then the high cloud had rolled in which was always going to happen.

Anyway, you get a rooftop pano of a day that did look perfect 30 mins prior, you'll have to use your imagination a little.

I've done this a couple of years back heading from Niseko up to the NAC Otoe Cat operation. I ended up buying some cheap Chinese ones in a Sapporo department store (~$A120). Sold them back here on eBay for what I paid.
