Does your camera have a setting where you can point it at a particular area of a scene and set the exposure for that area? On some it is half depressing the shutter button. On others (my Canon) there is a button with a star. Otherwise the camera will average the whole scene on a grey scale. That means that where you have strong contrasts the light areas will be overexposed and the dark areas will be underexposed.

yep, can touch the screen and it adapts to light levels where you touch - problem is that it won't make the other bits correct

No, but you can decide which part of the scene you want correctly exposed. Most people will not worry about a washed out sky if the foreground mountains are properly exposed.

You probably have a bracketing option, where the camera will take three shots - one under exposed, one "correct" according to its algorithm and one over exposed.

So this morning didnt turn out as hoped.

We knew a storm was in place, and Drive BC had advice to "drive with caution"

So we headed off and things looked ok, provided you were sensible

We made it about 80km to Lake Louise turnoff and visibility suddenly dropped to about 5m and that was a good enough sign, so we turned around and headed back to Banff, driving at around 60kph.

We checked into a coffee shop and found ourselves a very nice boutique hotel right in town and scored a junior suite for only $165/night.

Not sure yet if we will be here for one or two nights. Snow is still dumping in town znd it looks like a post card.

Turns out the road has been closed so turning back was fortuitous

Most of my shots have been ok, but have struggled more with flat light. I've been too lazy to play more and learn the camera

Many years ago we had a similar issue but the storm was a way out. As it ended up it hit late at night and we sat in a truck convoy to Revelstoke. We were the last through before they shut it.

I’m glad you guys are safe, and managed to get accomodation.

Snowy/icy roads and poor visibility can make for some very tricky driving conditions.

Don't forget to clear those car lights. You'd be amazed at how much road gunk, ice can get on them and impair their brightness. and of course all your other windows.

I'm reminded of my ex's and my decision to do a road trip in Canada in winter. Vancouver to Calgary and back to Kelowna then up to Big White. A few stressful moments including an unexpected night in Cache Creek because Rogers Pass etc was closed, and some stressed exchanges while driving. There was a plaintive cry from the 4 year old in the back seat "When does the holiday start?" She was right. We bailed straight to Kelowna, saw Babe - Pig in the City* on New Years Eve and took an extra day skiing at Big White.

*We must have been total pains in the arse - involuntary cries of "That's Sydney hospital, etc.

Best tip.. put in on manual, ajust the meter point to centre.
Set your shutter speed for movement issues and then adjust the aperture to suit, if not enough light? , ramp up the ISO, ISO noise can be smoothed.
The only time I ever not shoot manual is If im in real low light, then I let the camera do the work.

Yep, got caught on our first trip driving up the Sun Peaks road after dark, cursing how bad the car's headlights were.

We now travel everywhere with a 4 litre bottle of water in the back

    Ok brains trust

Lake Louise was completely frozen over, people skating, zamboni operating, yet Lake Minnewanka was only frozen for the first 100m, you could see and hear the ice moving and water was lapping through holes in thin ice close to the shore.

Both within 50km of each other and similar altitude

    Why the difference?

Is it due to water depth?

Water depth, water flow. Plus Minnewanka is a reservoir so its elevation can change quite a bit.

the highway over Rogers Pass was opened again late last night following completion of avalanche control work.

And then it was closed again earlier this morning due to a crash and so we decided to stay in Banff another day/night.

Lake Louise resort was reporting 71cm of snow this morning and it was still snowing moderately in Banff up to about 9am but has sliwed to flurries and we have even spotted some blue sky trying to poke its way through

    We’ve just arrived in Revelstoke

Because of the storm we completely missed our original Revelstoke booking andspent twonights in Banff.

This will just be an overnighter before we head to Kelowna tomorrow.

We also lost a Kelowna day from our Schedule

Tod Mountain had more or less zero profile outside BC before the change. They had no commercial accoms at the mountain so it was pitched simply as the local ski hill for people from the Thompson/Nicola region. So when they put in the new lifts and trails, new power and water systems to permit on hill lodgings and re-branded as Sun Peaks, it essentially became a new resort on the north american market. Revy, OTOH, has been on the radar for the north american and world markets for a decade. It has its reputation and it would take a lengthy, expensive campaign to change that. It could be done, but at a high price.

Tod Mountain/SP has a quaint little European style village which would have taken a lot of planning and capital.

Revelstoke has a niceish looking hotel and not much else - again not family friendly

We've arrived at Revelstoke and checked into the Ramada Hotel, not too bad a hotel, and quite new, but bang in the middle of nowhere LOL Obviously waiting for some infrastructure to catch up with it

The 280km drive down was a real mixture.

Left Banff with clear, blue skies, but lots of compact snow on the roads. but as we went up Rogers Pass, we had thick fog with poor visibility, then back down the other side, the sun glare off the wet roads made visibility very poor and tricky to drive.

Got overtaken on one section of double yellows, by, yes you guessed it - a black F350 (with a snowmobile on the back) (unfortunately I was only doing the speed limit at the time)

On our way to Kelowna this morning.

Woke up to about 2cm of wet snow accumulated on the car, and a bit of fog.

In Sicamous right now for a Tim Hortons coffee stop. Drive wasnt too bad with lots of slushy snow about

I think you will find that downtown Revelstoke has a lot of friendly families and some lovely local accommodation. It's a bit like Red Mountain where the town of Rossland offers much more than the ski hill.

We had 5 nights booked in Kelowna, but missed one at the beginning due tot he storm.

Then last night we decided we'd had enough, so after some quick checks, our SP accommodation was free, so we added tonight to our plan and left Kelowna one day early this morning.

Sly tried to hook up for lunch be we couldnt make it, and we visited Big White.

Kelowna scorded about 4cm overnight, so the drive with caution over Hwy 93, with snow/slush on the road a lot of the way, and fog in some areas reducing visibilty down to about 20m (and yet some twat still blew past us like we were standing still - his reaction time would have been longer than his visibility).

So we have now checked into Trappers Landing in SP, and tbh, the drive up the hill felt like we were coming home.

We have 4 friends sharing accommodation, arriving on Friday, and another 2 plus kids arriving on Monday (staying at Stones Throw)

    Haven't posted in a while.

Based in Sun Peaks for 2+ weeks and pottering around with a group of friends. Most conditions etc defined by Astro in the SP thread.

Today was the best day to date with healthy flurries all day long and a reported 7cm.

Had a bit of an incident sometime today, and managed to lose my insulin epipen. - not sure where it dropped out of my pocket.

If it isn't handed in to guest services by tomorrow morning I'm going to have to drive down to Kamloops tomorrow morning to grab a new one, and in the meantime, I don't get to have that steak dinner we'd booked at the steak house (and probably no breakfast tomorrow either)

not sure what they put in the water here in Canada, but I seem to have developed some sort of growth on my face since I arrrived!

Hopefully it will wash off when I return home to Perth in a week or so
