To be honest I think it’ll take MULTIPLE seasons and I’ll start with SB1, then keep adding from there (who am I kidding?! In my dreams! #Lotto life)

But surely you want to learn about more than walking backwards down the hill whilst holding your students hands?

Was great reading your trip report as you went, sorry to hear of some of your issues and yes with sharing accom can be a pain. I remember a friend once told me past about 3 or 4 days...things get stinky like dirty socks. We have always kept to that rule and it works well. :) Seems you may have to hit drive BC a bit harder next time for driving plans... :) although road open and clear 1 minute and then 20 mins latter snowed under, I feel your pain.

After this site, Drive BC was probably our most frequently visited site. We saw 3 crashed vehicles in lesd than 15 minutes so I’m guessing a lot of people got caught out that morning. We were just lucky enough to be able to turn around where we did because we would have got stuck if we’d gone any further

We also had a Kia Sorrento and drove a similar itinerary as you and found it to drive very well, no drifting whatsoever, in fact we were pleasantly surprised at how it handled generally and more importantly how it handled the icy road conditions. Must have been an isolated issue.

I left Perth on 5th December

I was posting lots of Pics of snow

    I wasn’t home on 24th/25th December

I came home with a bushy silvery beard.

My kids are starting to ask questions. I shaved off the beard today. Couldn’t take the risk that they may discover the truth. and hopefully they won’t dig any further ;)

Hey Gareth given you have flown to Canada numerous times now who do you prefer to fly with. We were considering Air Canada but after reading some feedback here I'm not so sure now.
Doesn't score to well here either

We paid for Air New Zealand on our last trip and they were brilliant throughout. If we have to pay in the future I suspect they’ll be our preferred choice.

Qantas is always good but tend to be more expensive so typically only use them with points

Cathay is quite ordinary servicewise but they do typically run on time and offer us a good route via HK and I use QFF points again

Qantas and Cathay also seem to be a bit more relaxed about bag weight

Thank you so much! We always fly into LAX with Qantas (QFF members ) and go from their but looking at all options. Enjoyed your trip report and are starting to put something similar together.

Consider flying via auckland then direct to YVR just to avoid LAX.

But the QFF option is appealing

I've come up with Air NZ as a great option from Perth. Only 2 flights to get to Vancouver is important if you're worried about golf clubs going missing on flights !

No, but the principle is the same, fewer flights means less chance of important stuff going missing.

you can still achieve that with

    Cathay Per-HK-YVR
    Virgin PER-BRE-YVR one example

Thanks, I'd checked Cathay which is quite a bit more expensive. Will check Virgin.

We’ve found Cathay out of Perth , flying into North America, usually most convenient, quickest or well priced enough that we’ve used them twice now.

    When work pays its Qantas.

Yeah, Cathay is easily the quickest, but as well as being about $500 more than Air NZ, it gets to Vancouver at about 7.30am...not a good arrival time. I've never taken a break between long flights to sleep at an airport hotel before, but seems a good option this time. Arrive in Auckland early morning, hopefully not having slept on the flight, then 6 hours sleep at an airport hotel before the long flight getting into Van mid arvo.

not this trip specific, but didn't want to start a new thread.

As my SDS starts to itch (cummon, its been 4 weeks since we got back!!) I was plugging a few car rental options into airportcarrentals.com.

And much to my surprise, for the same December (random) dates, renting Vancouver to Vancouver, Calgary to Vancouver or Calgary to Vancouver for 30 days, worked out almost the same cost.

Previously we have always been slugged a premium for returning to a different location, but no so now?

A mid size SUV like Jeep Grand Cherokee was quoted for 30 days at marginally over AUD2k, including CDW and all 3 route options were less that $6 difference

(Edit: I corrected the code for Calgary, to acknowledge Legs’ observation)

At the risk of being controversial, I observe that you might need to revisit that one more time. Calgary is YYC, YYR is Happy Valley-Goose Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador.
