I am flying back from Japan to Tullamarine in early September. Flight arrives back at 12.15 am. I then need to get to Mt Buller. What options do I have? Any suggestions?

I don't need to return to Melbourne as I am meeting my family in Mt Buller and will be going home from there a few days later.

I will gave my carry on luggage and a light (15kg) suitcase.

Your options are going to be severely limited at that time of night. The Vline only runs twice a day I think, a morning service around 8am and an evening service around 6pm. Unless you want to wait till the 8am service I think the only way would be to hire a car.

Yeah I thought there may not be any options that fitted well with the times.

I don't need a car as my family will already be there with our car. They are driving down from Jindy for ABOM. And I expect I would not be able to hire one for just the one way drive. And how do you get to your lodge from the car park at 4 am?

DH is talking about driving down to pick me up but we then have the issue of getting to our lodge when arriving at Mt Buller at about 4am.

Might have to work out where to spend the night and catch a coach in the morning. I won't be bothering to ski, even if there is snow ROFL, so it does not really matter when I arrive.

You should be able to book a taxi to pick you up from the car park at 4am if you go that way.

Try Ibis - formerly Formula 1 - for a bed. Not super cheap like 10 years ago but at around $124 cheaper than Holiday Inn.

Unfortunately that won't work because I arrive at 12.15 am on a Thursday. They only do Wednesday, Friday, Sunday.

    Hi Skichanger
I was going to say the same regarding numerous bus options but Wolly was quicker off the mark. There are several coaches that drive up from Melbourne leaving around 4 - 4.30am each day. Some do one-way tickets and some do pick-ups directly from Tulla airport.

It would give you a roughly 4-hour stopover in Melbourne where you could have a shower at the airport, change of clothes, grab a bite to eat and either wait there for the Airport-Buller coach or get yourself to the Melbourne bus depot options via taxi.

    Good luck.:)

The coaches are looking like a good option. I will do some investigations into which will work.

    Thanks.

by the time you get through customs , and wait 2 hours for the baggage handlers to unload your luggage , you will just have time for a expensive, crap cup of coffee before a coach turns up and takes you to buller

Sounds less than ideal but may actually be the best option.
