Woke up at 430 and have been trying to sift through the latest updates. Really doesn't look good out there for some towns. Hope Big Red and Kelpieboy are ok.

Not looking good still for Bruthen and Mallacoota even.

Cool morning in Sale. Car is covered in dust.
Getting little news about result of fires around Bruthen.
Meant to be staying in Lakes until Friday but think I'll be heading back to 3113 later this morning.

Will get back to the region once declared safe and spend some time, hopefully repairing mates property In Bruthen (fingers crossed)

Message on FB that Blue Bee Cafe (in Bruthen) is closed today (no power) but survived fires (so far).

Edit: Just heard from mates that their house and livestock have survived. Truly incredible.

Situation is so dynamic so can only take info on face value.

Recent info suggests town fire alarm has been sounded with people heading into water.
A few peeps are tweeting from the area, pics of current situation are awful.

The incident controller of the Gippsland fires said he could not confirm whether lives or property had been lost in massive fires that burned through East Gippsland overnight, because it was so hot they had to ground their infra-red tracking plane.

And he said the beachside town of Mallacoota, where 4,000 tourists and locals are on the foreshore being protected by firefighters, is expected to be hit by fire this morning. Chris Eagle, from the department of environment, land, water and planning, said the fires grew about 60% in size overnight.

On Monday afternoon, the three largest fires — Barmouth Spur near Bruthen, W Tree, and the Cann River fire — were estimated to be 200,000ha in size.

“There’s a lot of fire, a lot of activity,” Eagle told ABC radio in Gippsland on Tuesday morning. “There’s going to be impacts to residents just because of the sheer size.”

Asked if that meant he could not say whether there had been a loss of property or lives, Eagle said: “No, not as yet.”

He said he had reports the fire had directly impacted on the towns of Bruthen and Orbost.

The Princes Highway was closed from Bairnsdale to Genoa, east of Mallacoota, on Monday night, but on Tuesday morning the stretch between Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale was opened to allow tourists to leave.

All roads between Bairnsdale and Genoa are closed.
There are around 20 small fires between Nicholson (Princes Hwy near Bairnsdale) and Bruthen, including one at Kalimna just out from Lakes Entrance. There are also many between Lakes and Genoa, probably caused by lightning (no rain at all).
Weather now at Lakes Entrance 17.5º with WSW wind blowing around 40-50kph.

We are safe ,fire front passed us by at around 1.30am and is now threatening Cudgewa and then Corryong or Colac Colac depending on windshifts. Wind is currently strengthening from wnw so hard to say which town is next in line. Fire trucks currently setting up around Cudgewa Valley Road and down Briggs Gap Rd which is an each way guess on wind direction. I will add fire is still very much out of control.

    Scary.

Am I right in thinking thought that those tourists shouldn't be there? The message to get out was pretty firm and the extra numbers are just going to make things harder for everyone. Why put yourself in that danger?

Can't seem to find current posts on NSW fires anywhere else so putting it here and keen to get any updates on South Coast if any body has some.

Reports via RFS radio that Batemans Bay area affected by the fire spotting towards Malua Bay in strong westerly winds and properties potentially lost in the bushland between Batemans Bay and Princes Highway. Not much confirmation though anywhere else and very few media reports from what I can see, rapidly developing situation this morning.

Mallacoota wasn't included as the fires at the time shouldn't have impacted it. Not long after that message was given some other fires started that were going to. By then they couldn't get out.

4000 people on the beach at Mallacoota! WTF! Population 1000. Let's say (being very generous) that there was another 1000 from surrounding areas. That means at least 2000 tourists - who had been given many many warnings to piss off, but ignored those warnings. They chose instead to avail themselves of free volunteer CFA protection. For what? So they could post on effing twitter and facebook about it. So they can dine out on it for years to come - "I know all about bushfires etc". They should have been herded out of the area or into the sea by big effing bulldozers. Selfish bloody arseholes, the lot of them.

If I'd been in the area with the CFA I would be particularly peeved at these f*cking tourists.

Corryong under siege from spot fires ,Colac Colac caravan park ?
Fire units retreated from Cudgewa Valley Rd back to Corryong ,unsure about Colac Colac. Also fires erupting in the Thowgla Valley and Nariel Valley. There isnt much stopping this fire from getting into the KNP just south of Khancoban. From there it will be bloody hard to stop for a while ,especially given its current speed. This is starting to get very nasty.

I see. Still, if I was anywhere in the vicinity of the fires I would have been on my way home. I'm terrified of being trapped by fire.

It feels like nowhere is safe at the moment :(

    And ????
Things change in fires. FFS they had ample opportunity to get out. They're bloody lucky to have that time!
Hell, from the time the fire started to the time we got hit 11 years ago, was 20 minutes. And yet, lots of residents got out in that time. 24 hours is plenty of time. Where on earth are you coming from?

I think we can excuse Teckel.....this is very stressful for CFA crews and Fire Management Viccos..Those crews in Mallacoota are working in intolerable and a very dangerous environment.Tourists just need to do as they are told ....these crews need every bit of support that can be mustered right now....

What experience? You mean everyone wants to live through a bushfire, and expect others to take care of them out of the goodness of their heart?

Yeah. Like GTF out when they're told.
I don't need to be excused - what do people find so hard to understand that they can see it any other way? Oh goody - a fire! Let's go and experience it! Hey, look everyone! Here's me in front of the fire. Will I get famous on twitter for this photo? And here are all these fools in yellow come to save my butt. Pay them? Not bloody likely.
