There certainly were some individuals interviewed yesterday that said "they'd paid for their holiday, and by god they were going to have it".

the initial warnings only included mallacoota as being in danger of being cut off by the hwy being closed further west. the emphasis was more on getting tourists out of the lakes - cann river region. the wingan river fire started much later. there was a window where people knew mallacoota could be at risk and the road was open.

IIRC by then the roads further out were blocked. All they would have been able to do would be get closer to the burning fires.

there was an opportunity to go to Eden, which my BIL did. At the time they left, the official advice said not to, but local coppers encouraged them to go.

4000 people leaving at the same time sounds like a recipe for disaster. One small accident, breakdown or tree fall on that section of the Princes Hwy and suddenly 24hrs would seem awfully short.

Oh above posts are correct....I am sure fire crews are not analysing this....they are just trying to protect lives and save as much property where they are able.

Separate fire threatening Tumbarumba from the north west. Wind would have to swing nearly 180 for the fire at Corryong to threaten Tumbarumba and even then it would have to come back through my place first ,probably a journey of around 60kms as the crow flies.

abc talking to community radio in mallacoota. apparently one thing stopping people leaving was that diesel sales were suspended to keep it for emergency services

2000. The locals had every right to stay. And it would have been over a period of time. Let's say an average of 3 per car. That's less than 700 cars over a largish window.
The police can enforce evacuations for tourists. They can't for people who own or rent properties long term. The police should have been doing their duty and enforcing tourist evacuations.

Just a solid SW would turn it up towards Tintaldra and beyond. Hopefully Tumba far enough Nth to be out of harms way should it come.

The story of the volunteer killed overnight is horrific. They’re calling it a fire induced tornado that flipped an 8t truck full of water end to end. Unbelievable

Just heard from a friend of ours. They evacuated from Mallacoota yesterday at the last minute but left their tent etc, before the road closed, and got to Bega. Now trying to drive out via Canberra.

Just told a friend early this morning to get the hell out of Wonboyn and head to Eden. Not long after they got a text from the RFS saying the Mallacoota fire in VIC is expected to jump the border today.. jesus.

In NSW when a bushfire section 44 is declared the RFS is in total control of all emergency services and anyone, including residents can be ordered to be evacuated. This scenario happened last weekend.

Yeah, I prefer the situation here where it's optional for residents. They can be advised to leave, but not forced. So when you hear on the media that residents are being told they must evacuate (in Vic), it's just media bs - making it up as they go along - sounds more sensational.

Arrows show lines the fires have taken in past 24/36 hours. The big concern for us yesterday was the fire now well south of us which is threatening Corryong and beyond. The separate fire to our north is now threatening Tumbarumba and is now a concern for us if and when it gets beyond Tumbarumba it will hit the Bogandyera Reserve leaving nothing between it and us. Wind is drawing more westerly now though so again we might get spared. We are approx at the green X.

Does anyone know if these people on the beach are at risk of asphyxiation? It looks so terrible I can't imagine the oxygen levels are going to be normal as that fire gets close and starts consuming all the availble O2.

Shouldn't be an issue. Plenty of oxygen coming in from the sea. In other words, they're not surrounded by fire on all sides.

Great news! :) Probably because you'd prepared it properly. Pleased they let you back in  If I were you, I'd hang around your house and make sure that no flareups threaten your house.
