Article in the Sunday Telegraph about future plans for Jindabyne.
This might be old news for some but I haven't seen it beforehand.
NSW dept planning link below. Scroll down to the Community statement, pdf is an interesting read. Sounds positive.

There's some good detail in the plan.
Let's hope it's not all 'pie in the sky' stuff, although I remain skeptical.

    I'll just put this here
Now is the time for big thinking when it comes to planning for the future of Jindabyne and the Snowy Mountains region.

I'm excited to share that investigations into an airport as part of the region’s Special Activation Precinct (SAP) are now underway. The Snowy Mountains is positioned to become the Southern Hemisphere’s very own version of Aspen and now more than ever we need to be bold in finding ways to make the region stronger.

I'm guessing this was pre-pandemic when the thought of thousands of international visitors didn't involve the spread of disease. There is already fly in fly out skiing in the Southern Hemisphere and it's in Queenstown. What they have that we lack is a viable mass transit system from town up to the hills.

It's no good flying people in if you don't have any way to move them around once they are here.

Requires a train so time to trundle out the old Jindabyne to Thredbo via Bullocks extension of skitube..... except we have the slight disadvantage that the higher our hills get the flatter they get.

Dont get me wrong as there are a lot of excellent ideas for the area but .... airports and Aspen just indicate the poor bloke is struggling for relevance.

When you can somehow cram in 1.3 M visits in a 10 week season, your only real option for sustainable growth is to extend the season. Summer. All the cool kids in the N Hem are doing it, because it works.

I like the look of the plan, the details don't mean much to me since it's been so long, but community-involved planning is better than "here it is, be grateful" top-down planning, and far better than no planning at all. The builder part of me wonders how to 'connect the town to its waterfront' when the lake level fluctuates so much. Perhaps use dredging and piling walls to make a deep water basin with a more stable water level? That would certainly need funding (and permission) from more senior levels of government. Calling @dawooduck, this needs some hard work at the coal face from a civil engineer team.

The water level changes based on things that Snowy Hydro does. To make it stable they'd have to do it elsewhere instead.

It doesnt have to be. But I don't know how the system works there anymore. Is there any legislative foundation for such plans? In BC all local governments work from a document called Official Community Plan (OCP). These must be reviewed every 20-25 years and are consulted whenever council receives DA or variance request, or contemplates a planning or building bylaw change. 18-24 month process including repeated public consultation for OCP formulation or revision. So if the Jindy plan has some kind of defined status in the planning system, then it has some clout. Or the shire takes a glance and says, "yeah, nah" and it goes nowhere. I dunno, depends who takes ownership I guess.

Yeah I get that but in theory a small separate basin could be created, a pool within a lake, that would retain relatively stable water levels. A lock could be used for boat movement between basin and lake. But yowza, the cost.

Clearly this is something that Roy & HG should consult on. Take it away boys.

What ever happened to sealing Bobeyan road? I'm pretty sure local government were allocated money for it last election. And as mentioned, just having an airport doesn't guarantee flights. A dry slope with some rails setup on front valley over summer would see more use than an airport in Jindabyne.
