Christ, I did it once in mine, and totally understand why it failed and I have no desire to repeat it.

The NPA is arguing against the nation's largest renewable energy project (Snowy 2.0), there's no way it would support a rail line for skiers / tourists.

The privately held land would not be the (technical, legal) problem.

Rail, as good as a Norwegian Blue.

Realistically people who ski don’t use public transport at home, whereas they might use it overseas.

The airport plan, very likely to be made to happen and in the longer term workable. But only with long term support for regional air carriers. Which includes proper access to airports at the other end.

No point having a whizzy airport at Jindy if folks and all there ski kit cannot easily park their cars and load onto a direct flight from their home city.

The Jindabyne international airport is the biggest boondoggle I've heard of for a while. No matter how hard Pork Barilaro talks it up Jindabyne will never become another Queenstown or Aspen.

I'd love a Melb to Jindy flight.

Having done the Melb to Canberra flight, hire car, drive routine more than 25 times, it's a lengthy process.

If there was a coach service meeting the flight with drop offs in jindy, bullocks flat and thredbo it would be a winner.

I have no need for a car when staying in thredbo or perisher.

Planning out a Thredbo trip for next year, providing we have a vaccine, it bugs me hiring a car for 10 days to get stung 5 times.

    Rental cost $1000
Snow cover insurance for the car $300
    Chains in case... $100
    Park entry $300
    Fuel $50

    $1700 basically

I considered that for me + the 4yo. Fly to CBR, Murrays coach to skitube, train up etc.

If I could secure longer accommodation at a reasonable cost it might be viable, but as it is, doing it this way means losing a day in snow school at each end, so not great.

Are there even services that do that from CBR?

In Europe you fly, train and then hire a van for the final leg or between resorts.

I'd much rather pay $400 each way even from CBR airport, than the hire car routine

Why would anyone from Melbourne go to Jindy to ski? (Other than a once off to check it out)

More reliable snow for one with elevations above 2000m. The Main Range alone would be another one.

I would. In fact pre-babies I went a couple of times a season.

If I’m going to go to more effort than Buller I’d prefer to ski NSW than Falls/Hotham.

How many other Melbourne people do we have on the forums that would want to go? Group travel! (at least in terms of shared transit to Jindy / Bullocks Flat / Thredbo)

I've given my reasons many times before, but for me it's allowing my kid to do snowboard lessons before he turns 7, which is the current minimum age in Hotham and Falls Creek.

There is also the "bundle" factor. In the NSW resorts you get lifts + lessons for far cheaper than you do in Vic (under normal circumstances anyway). For comparison, last year I spent ~$550 each for myself and my wife on a 5.5 day lift pass + 5 group lessons. In Vic this would have cost us ~$850 each. Ski school for the (last year) 3 year old is similar. ~$500 in NSW, ~$750 in Vic. Add that all together and it's $850. Then you have resort entry. NSW was $29 * 2 + $89 skitube open return = $147. In Vic, $300 for 6 days of resort entry.

I used to travel up from Melbourne to Jindabyne for a few reasons - realistically it's only a couple of hours more than Hotham or Falls (at least before the seemingly never ending roadworks in Western Victoria).
I would have happily left the car at home if there was a way to get there quickly and up and down the hill - love having a few beers at the snow without having to worry about driving home.
It seems ludicrous that it's easier and cheaper to get from Melbourne or Sydney to Queenstown than the Australian resorts.

That’s my reasoning too. In my mind, and it may not be correct, the Melbourne to Buller trip is ‘short’ but to Falls and Hotham it’s ‘long’ and once I’m in the mindset of a long trip, adding a couple of hours doesn’t seem to fuss me.

Buller with the family no. Day trips only

    Hotham with the family maybe

Falls with the family yes, but it bores me

    Perisher with the family yes

    Thredbo with the family yes

I'd rather ski Thredbo than anywhere else TBH

If you're paying for Thredbo accommodation (or lift tickets this season) that's very little in comparison.

That's very expensive, but the one way trip would kill them so they have to cover a return to Canberra so then the pricing is OK on a per hour basis

Trackless tram, stops at airport, east Jindy, new Sport and Rec entry off Kosci Rd (for the new 'education precinct with alpine sports training academy) Jindy, new Heritage centre at top of hill gping up Alpine Way from snowline, bullocks flat - literally pull up next to platform gates a minute before ski tube leaves, Thredbo ranger station (for the new funitel lift access to CP), Thredbo. Bang it in while the inevitable road upgrades are done. Thredbo Valley Track is now lifted!

Maybe even convert skitube to trackless tram if gradient is not too much and perisher partner with national parks to build the SRVT (Snowy River Valley Trail) with a spur trail to meet lower TVT at its high point a few kms from Bullocks. Bingo, lifted descending mtn bike trails from both Thredbo and Perisher to Jindabyne or Bullocks..... or all the way around to easy Jindabyne via foreshore trail. Think big they said, so I am!

That a expensive hour or two saved.

Guessing it's still a 5hr trip doing it that way with all the inconvenience of not being in control. Surely it's easier just to drive your own wheels 6hrs and get their on your own terms. I'd much rather captain my own vehicle that be a passenger on an aircraft. Especially when there is minimal if any overall time benefit.

This is even more pertinent for Queenslanders. It is significantly easier to go the New Zealand. It would be interesting for somebody to do the economic modeling on what is "costs" for so many Aussies to go to NZ and/or Japan versus building something near Jindy to rival the transport simplicities of Queenstown?

Careful what you wish for here. All these ideas about making it easier to get to the snow will ultimately result in more visitation. Consider how much the Aus population has increased by since the 1990s, for example, and then ask yourself if the skiable terrain and lift capacity has kept pace.

Maybe if we have a few billion $$$ we could just concentrate on improving PT in our major cities and largest regionals for a few more decades, then think about taking skiers to ski resorts?

Which is exactly why all efforts at mass transit founder. This attitude permiates Australia and drives our need to make bigger better longer roads and slowly allow the rail system to grind itself into oblivion.

Even the toob really only gets use because the car park at P to too small and in such poor repair and a good deal on season pass (under normal arrangements), both ploys to help get people thinking about using the toob.

We just need a wealthy benefactor. Someone like @CarveMan. He must be loaded 'cause he owns a ski shop.

To fund the extension of the ski tube through to Buller via Thredbo, Falls and Hotham. Yeah there'll be a few tunnels but if we all chip in, like the lodge work weekends, I' sure we'll knock it over in no time.

Bring your picks and shovels and we'll have a few beers, tell a few stories.

    Yes, excellent idea.

Brumby work for the dole scheme. We'll take a few pics for the grand-kidddies of us harnessing the horses dressed in flannels, so they can see how tough we had it building the railway back in the old days. It'll become Snowy Mountain folklore.

Yes, this has been a particular gripe of mine for years.

Used car tyres. Problem solved. Just dump e'm on top, mix a bit of dirt in if the mood takes and viola, we'll be skiing an extra 1,000 vert in no time. AND we've solved the used tyre waste problem at the same time. Everyone's a winner.
