112 chairs from Merritts were sold by on-line auction which raised over $200,000 for worthy causes with Chair 2 going for the highest price of $4005. A more typical price was $2500 each.

The Mt P Double and Triple chairlifts are due to be removed next summer as those lifts are being replaced with a 6-pack. Given the positive publicity from recent chairlift auctions at Thredbo, Falls Creek and Mt Buller, I'm pretty confident that Perisher will auction them off as well, although the prices will probably be a little lower. So keep an eye out for that sale if you want a novelty garden swing.

You can’t say if they are gonna be removed next summer yet cause the DA for the next chair has not been approved yet. And a DA approval in a national park takes time

I was careful to say "The Mt P Double and Triple chairlifts are due to be removed next summer", because all sorts of things could happen during the current difficulties. o_O

And, even if the place does get itself open it will almost certainly be on some sort of reduced basis. There won't be a lot of cash sloshing around to throw away on fripperies like new chairs.

Even before coronavirus, I'd be surprised if the DA were to be approved in time for construction to start early enough a 2021 opening. Given how long the Merritts DA took (over a year and a half), I'd expect a 2022 opening for Mt P at the earliest, with lift construction happening during the summer of 2021/2022.

Then you have to factor in the financial situation that Vail is dealing with. Theyve borrowed considerable sums of money, and have been cancelling or postponing lift developments worldwide, so I'd be surprised if they're still willing to drop some 20 million on a chairlift in Australia.

I'd assume its a similar situation in Thredbo where any unessential upgrades have been put aside. Event wouldn't be doing particularly well at the moment considering how pretty much their entire business relies on people being able to leave the house and travel (cinemas, hotels, etc). Hopefully they decide to continue with their Merritts Mountain House upgrade next summer.

Wonder if they have over-bought on their global purchases and will now look to offload some resorts.

How Vail Resorts goes depends very much on what happens with the North American 20/21 season. Ticket sales are currently on hold. Looks like summer activites such as mountain bike are on hold which is a big earner. Even if the North American resorts open for winter, the numbers are going to be substantially down, due to a combination of difficulties with overseas people travelleling, reluctance of locals to travel, depressed economy etc. However, if the 20/21 season goes ahead, they should survive cash flow wise. If circumstances are such that the 20/21 season is a complete write off / closed, then they will be in some trouble, need to renegotiate covenents on loans or raise cash from bond or share placement.

I think sales of resorts is unlikely, unless they go into administration, in which case banks / hedge funds and other parties may look at selling off assets

The sign writing went up yesterday on the new gondola and it will be known as the Merritts Gondola. Not very imaginative but that is what it has been called during planning and construction.

I occasionally look at the search terms used by people who view my Australian ski lifts web page and a few people have Googled "Mt Perisher Gondola".

Well sponsorship generates extra money and if that money is used to pay for new or replacement lifts, I would be more than happy to use a lift named after anything, even a toilet cleaner.

However while about a dozen Australian lifts have been named after car sponsorships, only one, the Emirates chairlift has had a sponsorship for anything else.

I don't mind them retaining the Merritts name. Otherwise it would be lost forever. Like with the Merritts t bars. I'm more disappointed with Gunbarrel and Cruiser. They were way less unimaginative. Crackers to Kosi is Ok before Perisher steals it. We can always reinstate the Crackenback name somewhere in the future.
Maybe with reconciliation week the timing could have been used to give it an indigenous name.
We are way behind with some things...

Looks as they have a fair bit of superficial work to do. If the season did open on time they would have struggled for it all to be ready, but I guess they knew they had a bit longer

No, Valley terminal starts. The stairs in the middle of the VT building looking towards where the old merits load is.

Nice! Lovely work on the stone wall next to the sign.

I'm moderately confident that Karel's T-bar was named after Thredbo pioneer Karel Nekvapil in the same way that Anton's T-bar was named after Charles Anton and Sponar's T-bar was named after Tony Sponar, two other central European pioneers in developing the resort.

I agree with you that Telemark Poma, (since replaced with a T-bar) was probably named after its proximity to Telemark Ski Club. But I doubt it was a paid sponsorship. Without digging into books and documents, I have a shaky memory that it might be the oldest lodge at Perisher and the operators of the lodge may have had something to do with building the lift before all the lifts came under the same ownership?

Oh, and before someone asks, New Chum chairlift at Selwyn was NOT sponsored by Chum dog food after the recipe was revised. Rather it was named after New Chum Hill at the nearby Kiandra gold field.

    The New Chum story

    New Chum Hill
At Kiandra. It was by a strange way of fate that New Chum Hill; a rich gold-bearing ground came by its name. A party of two or three men, newly arrived from Great Britain, pitched their tent beside that of another tent which belonged to a party of miners who were working a claim on a flat through the centre of which, ran a branch of the main river. Next day the ‘new chums’ as all new arrivals were called, inquired from the more experienced miners as to the most likely place to set in to work. “Start and drive a tunnel into that hill yonder”, answered one of them in a joke, indicating a place where gold was the least likely to be found. To the astonishment of everyone and amid jeers of the onlookers, the tunnel was driven into that hill. In a few days the gold was struck, marvellously rich. Then the miners wondered and said, “Who would have thought it?” The new chums made their pile in a few short months, and returned to Great Britain to enjoy their easily-earned fortune.

I may be wrong but I think that was Sascha’s boutique. If you look at the building next to BB you can see where the shop was. Sasha Nekvapil owned it.
