Well to the east of Baw Baw, so should stay that way. Fires rarely move in a westerly direction. TG Narby's not on strike team this week [IMG] although some of our guys who are also on DSE summer crew went there at 6am this morning.

With the wind change, there's pretty much nothing between the fire and Hotham other than dense bush amd mountains and Wonnangatta Station - no towns.

I understand about the wind being unlikely to endanger Baw Baw, but it's hard not to worry when it's that close and that big

wind is still pretty light here. our anemometer is busted so I can't tell exactly. I'd say 5-10kts. There was a warning for severe winds above 900m but I haven't checked it lately

Yeah we got that warning as well, and at the minute looking through the binoculars seems pretty quiet on the ridge tops.
    Some dark looking clouds around.

Tecks- how far from you is the fire

Can't tell if the change has even come through here yet. Still warmish outside - no strong winds. All that's happened weather wise is that the sun is out - no longer overcast.

Dossa, we'd be 70 km west of the fire - feeling very safe. Nicholas's dad is out fighting it though.

Weather update - there is a gentle breeze from the south and a big band of cloud coming over the Great Dividing Range right now. Cloud band is fast moving.

There's a school camp up there on the Macalister, wonder how that's going. It's called Wollongarra.

Not liking the look of this fire. Seriously hoping it can be held west of the Macalister and we don't get a few days of strong southerlies

Even the optimistic bears are looking furtive and depressed with the potential of these Gippsland fires to burn a vast tract before they are controlled!!

Bears are looking at the sky and wondering when its ganna rain again and hoping that its very soon!

What is the possible fire size by saturday arvo? What small towns will be impacted after Licola. Is it ganna make it to Jamieson on its projected course over the next few days??

Cfa website has it as "small" "non-structure". Not sure how to interpret that.

Jamieson should be safe - unless the wind is from the SSE (in which case Woods Point would probably be threatened (again) )

It's probably someone with a campfire or similar. How many trucks? If only one, it probably means they are not all concerned about it.

OK, 2 trucks. If they were at all worried, they'd have sent at least 1 strike team (5 trucks). I certainly wouldn't be concerned at this stage.

Thanks teckel. More or less what I had assumed. No updates, no warnings, few trucks.

Bluddy television, reporters all talking about fires at Baw Baw!
Nowhere near the resort, Thompson dam is between us and the fire.
Been fielding lots of phone calls from folks asking how we are!

Problem is ganna be the spotting over long distances.Hope wind speed is low low low!!

There is lots of dry heavy fuel for miles & miles.

Hoping poor Licola is ganna be alright. They seem to be on recieving end of so much damage from fires and floods.

Wonder if USA can supply couple more sky cranes for NSW & VIC to share:i think DSE should be making enqires about them!!

Don't know if this summer is any worse than the average summer. I feel the main difference is that Sydney TV stations have discovered it's newsworthy.

The last 2 summers? There have been summers in the last 2 years? [IMG]
As an example, Narby CFA had a mere 9 callouts for the whole of 2012, and that number includes car accidents. It would have to be the least number of call outs by a long shot in the history of Narby.

    Yes Buffalo incident.

No not me Tecks, someone else and I was thinking the same thing.
It's over the ridge at the back of us.

Talk about doing silly things on a TBA, neighbours next door are getting a pool installed and the contractors were using all sots of tools.

I met Nicholas's dad and had a great chat with him, such a humble hero.

They think this thing will be burning for at least two weeks. Are you likely to be on strike duty in that time Teckel?

Will come on strike team duty in 9 days for a week. However, by that stage I'd expect the fire to be in remote areas - ie: DSE areas, not CFA areas - which suits me fine. CFA fights fires on private property whereas DSE fights fires in the bush. Not an exact division, but reasonably approximate. These days we work together fairly well - side by side in rural areas.

For those who are trying to figure out the boundaries of the fire, this is the best I can find:
    http://www.gippslandtimes.com.au/story/1244010/latest-map-of-the-heyfield-fire/?cs=1450

Not sure of the time. On the map itself, it says:4:39 (not am or pm) but the comment says "Fire situation as 11.10am Friday. Map released by the State Control Centre at 4pm"

Thomson Dam (long skinny one) on upper left, Lake Glenmaggie (round one) on lower right.

Yup. That map doesn't show it impacting Heyfield either, so it must be a morning map.
