That is not pretty Best of luck all you up that way.
dossa5 is sending some pics for me to host, here is the first:
He said in both these pics you can usually see Feathertop
Know a lot of people in the affected areas. In laws are not in firing line now but in tawonga region. Was driving up on the high plains only on saturday and was remarking to +1 how deadly all the bush around here is currently.
Tecks- hows it all going down your way.
Curra you must be getting a lot of smoke at the minute.
Here smoke now filling up the valley, cant see feathers at all, all windows now shut and hoses laying everywhere, just waiting for the menace.
+1 and kid about to take off. Have given her my ntn boots to take, dont want to deal with breaking in new boots
Nothing happening here at all. I'm concerned though for the likes of you and Curra. Good idea to send +1 & child off. Far less for you to be worried about. So you're staying?
Yeah decided to stay, +1 taken all documents ect.
Got a bunch of my grannies granny antique furniture I'd like to keep.
Got an escape route it need be which seems like a good idea at the minute.
Might not have a school to go to at the end of this month, time will tell
Unlikely to be bad over here while wind is S to E. but if it gets into the West Kiewa then a wind change could be nasty. Where we are is pretty safe too, in relative terms.
Our list of stuff to try to save if we do go is headed by ski boots , right up there with the top of the grandfather clock my great grandfather brought when he emigrated in the late 19th C.
Good luck dossa, guru and anyone else in that neck of the woods.
Make sure the car's pointed in the right direction and the keys are in the ignition, or at least in your pocket. No need to worry about locking the house on exit.
Weather models showing a wet change for the NE Friday & Saturday. Hopefully that dampens things down.
MUMC must be spitting chips as fire must have impacted their club hut from looking at your pic.
Federation Hut also is in this line.
I do hope somebody goes out to Westons Hut now and puts some corrugated iron over windows to protect them.
yeah guru, right in the thick of it. Whats your plan.
I went to hooterville last night to help someone with hoses ect.
The menace sleeping while whole nw spur glowing
Seems to be progressing E-SE with considerable spread o/n.
I would say they're gone USteve, emergency warnings say get outa there.
Jon Faine on 774ABC was just talking with someone who was airlifted off FT yesterday along with another 30+ people.
There's the W. Kiewa btwn NW Spur and Westons so there may be a chance. The dome on the other hand ...
Ziggy- you know my place/area well. Those ridges either side of our house- 1100 and 1250 asl have dissappeared from smoke.
I know that many have immediate concerns with their own houses and family and community.Thats where priority is, but i do hope that they give Westons Hut some protection while they can as its brand new and would be a set back if it got burnt again.
I am sure Parks will consider this in use of helicoptor drops unfortunately Gippsland houses will also deserve priority ahead of Bushwalking Huts and tomorrow is ganna be messy with resources deployed as best they can.
Good luck Dossa
NNW breeze forecast for Bright tomorrow dossa.
As mentioned, scattered showers & poss. thunderstorms from midday Fri. There may be 10-20mm in it up high.
very little smoke in our valley today. went for a drive to where there is a god vantage point looking to feathertop. from the north you would not think there was an active fire there, just smoke haze behind it. can all change very quickly with the wind.
I heard that they are operating convoys to hotham.
Maybe about time Parks put fire dugout at Federation Hut with 3 major fires in about ten or so years.
Must be difficult for cops to round up so many people and fly them out or send them jogging back to safety.
Red Robin Mine mine battery in West Kiewa has clearly signed private dugout for public use which is well signposted.Thank U Mr.Harris!!
I am not optomistic that this fire wont continue on its merry way all way to Omeo again!
De je vu
from audax site
Landgate firewatch has regular updates and history; may be of use:
CFA media release on Glenmaggie fire. Some people are just sooooo stupid
I can tell you now that the Audax event will be cancelled, even if the fire is extinguished - danger of falling trees and limbs. Also fire crews needing full access for blacking out.
Maybe. The fire doesn't appear to have been all that close to the H/ville-Hotham Rd. acc to that Landgate map. But the detail is poor.
Emergency vehicles will still need full access to the road. Then there's the danger of the fire flaring up. After those 2 female runners got burnt in WA, they won't be taking any chances with sporting events.
the audax event has a number of routes. not all go to hotham. at this stage i would think buffalo would be fine and mt beauty/falls probably.
bloody difficult for anyone involved in catering
Just give 'em scroggin ;-) They're tough.
U Steve, I dont think they will give a toss as they let Buffalo burn- different agenda I know.
It didnt burn down to the road yet, but I havent been there today- will later on to get more detailed visual myself.
Yes its all happening up there at moment.
Pity that DSE is commiting resources between two major fire areas.
Not sure what i am doing over longweekend but will certainly keep away from active fire areas so DSE & CFA can get on with it.
Who knows i might just go to Bright and have latte or two and read paper.
Well Buffalo better not get any fires as seriously DSE would as you say let it burn cos they are getting run of their feet.
Pity sky cranes aint got missiles to shoot at stupid water craft screwing up a serious and hazardous flying day.
Message a short time ago from a friend in Dinner Plain
"Water bombers are hard at work, we are doing usual CFA stuff, hurry up & wait!"
All ready and waiting but not much that ground crew can do just yet.
Bit late for Harrietville, but not for those at Falls & Hotham:
All cams now switched on for Falls and Hotham. Let's hope they leave them on overnight.
Pretty slack of Falls. No mention of any fires on the Falls website. No mention of the community meeting. Last entry was 3 days ago talking about their early bird pass. Poor form.
Was mentioned on facebook
they have been sending info to people via SMS and email
also I have just heard that the Dragon Boat races at Falls this weekend have been postponed to a date yet to be decided
Can anyone give an update on Dinner Plain
Only my earlier comment ^ from a friend up there.
Thanks SuskiQ, been watching the chopper come back down from the hill.
Thought there maybe be another update.
Watching Bungalo Spur burn from home at the minute, with heaps of red smoke from the back side of partially smoke obscured Feathertop
I emailed friends who live permanently in DP to say I was thinking of them... that was the response. Doing all they can in prep but mostly watch & wait. Assessing old fire breaks etc.
CFA Facebook has just popped up a warning on an out of control grassfire in Merrijig
Sorry - no more info - CFA website won't load for me.
Stay safe everyone!
fixed wing has been working out of mt beauty, presumably on Tallangatta valley or Bullioh fires since it kept heading to other side of Bogong
CFA site saying contained.
Funny what these fires do to ones mind. Out walking the dogs earlier this evening and rather thick smoke rapidly filled the air. First thought was it must be from the Thomson/Glenmaggie fires, no drama, they're not going to affect me. But then I decided the smoke was heavier than I would expect considering the distance, I might just crank up the pace home and check no new fires are in my vicinity. Thankfully all good. Smoke still hanging around now though.
Stay safe tomorrow you folk up north, hope it's a completely uneventful day.
