I know this is not ski related but every June long weekend I go to the Grampians for hiking, camping and a spot of back country road driving in the magnificent bush land in the Grampians N.P. in Western Victoria.
The Mt. Difficult route involves driving from Hall's Gap to Boroka lookout. From there one continues along a 4 x 4 track( The Mt. Difficult road) to a locked gate and track that leads to a hiker only campsite where there is space for two tents and a seasonal stream , that was flowing .It is situated NW of Lake Wartook.
The walking track up the hill is well marked with arrows. However the usually scenic summit of Mt. Difficult was lost in cloud and we could not see a thing. There was no wind and it was very peaceful up there.
On the way back we stopped the RAV4 at the Lake Wartook lookout which was very scenic, dare I say spectacular.
Day two was a long drive from Hall's Gap on rough roads and tracks to the Fortress trailhead on Harrop's track in the Victoria range. We had to ford a floodway .I got out and walked it in my sandals with my trousers rolled up. It was COLD and almost knee deep.
I found a safe route , put the beast into Low gear and drove through it , so that the show and the plan went ahead.
The walk was well worth it and I 'll return to this remote area of the SW Grampians again. However staying in Dunkeld or bush car camping closer to the Victoria range would be better next time around. The new All terrain tyres did a great job on those shite roads!.
    Photos are coming soon!

Deep Creek hike in camp site. The Fortress day hike. There was water flowing in the stream but in summer and autumn it would dry up.

Lunch at The Fortress. Reaching the top would require rock climbing gear and skills.

Good on you for getting out there. I was contemplating a trip up Boges Fri evening, back down Sat, but rain and high winds made me lose interest. Spent weekend down the peninsula instead.

Never walked that but if the world. Looks v interesting.

The Fortress hike, heading up the Fortress track from Deep Creek camp site.
The weather was damp on the Friday drive out there from Melb. but apart from that it was dry the whole long weekend.

A photo by Ms. A. : Mr.Tee driving along those remote unsealed tracks in the back blocks of the Grampians with Ms. M. holding the map. It is a touch of the outback in Victoria.

That track was not so bad but Harrop's track nearly shook my teeth loose.
Here is a photo of the Tee Mobile doing battle with a floodway/ford/ stream.

All part of the fun Mr. Tee only a puddle. There's a theory that you can travel at a certain speed to help minimise the effects of ruts........we travelled the outback for 5 months......I never found that speed :)

At 40 kph the ruts and endless corrugations were insufferable. In some places at 60 kph the car flew over them , so to speak.

The tricky bit is when your skipping over the tops of the ruts "directional" traction or grip can be dodgy and you start skipping down the camber without planning to go there.
The right speed will give you best of both worlds. Directional traction and a slightly better ride.

I have a childhood soft spot for the Grampians where we had many family camping holidays and our introduction to bushwalking. Great area, thanks for the pics.

Oh, and I agree with neilmny....that's just a puddle :)

It was deeper on the way out there. The photo was taken on the return trip when the water level had subsided.
