    I just realised that my smelly boot liners and gloves drying by the fire look a bit like xmas when I was a kid. The flash kind of killed it, but you get the picture.

    Merry xmas.

    A bad year in Japan is like a good year in Australia!!!! [IMG]

    And there's been 80cm+ in the last couple of days at Hakuba. Is that "isn't much snow yet"? Right now, there's more snow base mid mountain at Happo, than there was for any resort in Australia last season!!!!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Welcome, by the way!!!! [IMG]
    Good conditions on the hill this morning with about 10cm of fresh on the groomers. Still lots of deep stashes around. Been snowing all day. No one up on 47 today.
    The area on the first photo is the busiest spot in the valley. The human slalom course. The run on the left of the photo had 2 or 3 people on it which I did a couple of times. Higher up was also empty. I do go out early though for first lifts.
    I was in Hakuba for 10 days in late December. Now I'm in Whistler. There are people and long lift lines everywhere!!!
    Makes you really appreciate the emptiness of Hakuba!
Scratching my head on how I can swing a last minute trip...but looks like no dice with young kid in tow.
    Chris the park rat does backflips off the big kicker at 47 so no need to question his kahuna's. The park skis don't do him justice in the pow. Big pow day coming tomorrow. Day of the season. First lifts for shooore. Get over here mate. You know we are set up for the little tackers. Plenty of babysitters around too.
    I would call it probably 50 +. Seriously hardly anyone there this morning. The smallest crowd for a powder day I have ever seen. 10 people at the gondie when it opened. Days like today are why I live here.
    thought I'd post this here as well, just in case anyone misses it in the behemoth that is the Japan thread.......
    There has been some talk of a catchup in Hakuba on the weekend of the 19th of Feb, so I have created a thread in the arrangements section in order to try and organise this and get a date organised that everyone is happy with.
    If anyone will be in Hakuba on the weekend of the 19th and would like to meet fellow forum members then let us know here: https://www.ski.com.au/xf/posts/1196302&page=1#Post1196302
    Some great pow out there this morning. First tracks again all over the mountain. Pick of the day was first one down the Happo ridge. Best in the trees where the wind had filled a lot of the gullys.
    News of all this POW is great but, I was curious as to how much grooming and how often it is done on the runs around Hakuba? [IMG]
    Groomed every day, except for the known bump runs, which are left as they are.
    I don't find them particularly fun but the gravitational pull of the challenge means that they must be skied periodically.
    Powder powder and more powder this morning. Another day where it is actually too much for those unaccustomed to deep snow. I was watching many people just swimming in it.
    Awesome season so far.
    Today we stood at the top of a 400m vert absolutely untouched forested slope of perfect powder. And skied it. Close to perfection, over the shoulders white smoke. Areas between 35 and 40 degrees. Pillows.
    Did it twice.
    (In backcountry terrain, not resort at all)
    I feel sorry for anyone who had to work for there turns today. All lift accessed for me. I have never seen so many brilliant powder skiers in my life. (Thin and Phat ski)
    You don't need to feel sorry for me. You simply do not understand what a backcountry skier/ski mountaineer is, but that is ok. We don't need you to understand. Your comment was pointless and detracts entirely from the spirit of the times.
