There was a lot of work going on in that area in the second shot during summer. They only just got it finished prior to the first snows. Maybe they installed some in-road sprinklers to disperse the snow looking at that pic.

Already a really good base in Myoko/Nozawa SP. Hakuba is catching up now I think. Been a bit of an odd start there.

NHK were forecasting 80cm tonight across the White Triangle. Will be awesome skiing in the morning. Extended forecast is for snow continuing up to at least Saturday.

Back at the desk today in Yokohama after a great 5 days in Huks... Snow DTs have already kicked in, made worse by a mate who thought it would be funny to call this morning as he rolled into the Cortina car park - only a lazy 55cms fell overnight there from what I read, should be all time this morning.

9 more days till the next weekend warrior trip, 3 days in Myoko. Going to be a long wait with current conditions....

If you want to track Chamant's weather obs with reliable data, look no further than here: http://nadare.jp/teiten2X/index7.html

They take two daily readings. Snow fall every 24 hours is the the column that starts with "24" and ends in "cm".

There is also one for Hakuba, though they can be a little slow with putting the data online. The station is down near Echoland, so it gives a low valley indication of what is happening: http://nadare.jp/teiten2X/index3.html

It's possible via public transport SP but painful. Train to Naoetsu, train to Nou, bus or taxi to Charmant.

You'll really need a car. Journey would probably take less than 90 minutes. The ideal way to do it is for those transiting between Myoko and Hakuba. You can go via the coast and have a day in Charmant along the way.

Or just get Smitty to pick you up... [IMG]

Donza, I would've thought one of those powered hang gliders would be the go.

Edit: Like that Charmant blog Donza. Predicting 100cm in 24 hours [IMG]

No pics but how about a video! - http://vimeo.com/34701110

Last few days have been epic. The 5th was deep all over the mountains with the runs from the day before sporting deep powder again the next morning.

Cortina was closed due to too much snow but opened its top lift for the 6th with 55cm of fresh lying in wait. The sun came out and made it even better.

Last night we got another 20-30cm at the snowy end of the valley on top of the settled metre or so from the last few days. The combination of the settled fast and springy underlayer with 30cm of fresh on top was just perfect.

Got to dust my go pro off. Using my little handcam which doesn't have good quality...

For those traveling to Japan, Hakuba now has a detailed and valuable Avalanche Bulletin. This is fantastic for the town, and generally for Japan's progress in the area of public avalanche safety. It is really setting the standard.

The summary information can be found here. The detailed report can be found by clicking on the summary heading and text, or the link that says "more here" (in Japanese).

I understand that the bulletin will be available a minimum of three days a week - the weekends, midweek, and also public holidays. Starting soon, the bulletins will also be available in English. Anyone heading into the side country or backcountry should check this report. With future support, hopefully the bulletin will be available on every day of the week.

The bulletin is prepared by the Japan Avalanche Network, and is based on the Canadian Avalanche Association model. JAN and the CAA have been in partnership for 10 years, but unlike the CAA, JAN receives no government funding and has no sponsorship.

The Canadian model really is world best practice when it comes to avalanche bulletins. It provides both a Danger Rating for various altitude bands and also lists the type of avalanche problems currently applicable to the snowpack (all avalanches are not equal). For each avalanche problem, it then provides the likelihood of triggering, the likely size of the avalanches, the aspect and the specific elevation band.

There is also a written travel advisory and summary of the snow pack, weather and recent avalanche activity. This is well beyond what has ever been available before anywhere else in the country.

(More info on Danger Ratings here )

Top news Damian. This is a great initiative by the people there. [IMG] Just have to hope people will bother reading it.

So... at which Hakuba establishment will I be able to catch the tail end of the Hottest 100 on Australia Day?

I guess the snag + Fosters combo is also inevitable. [IMG]
