Woohoo Goryu opened today at 12pm. Got a phone call at 11 it was going to happen and was in line by 11.30 with some friends like Steve from Hakuba Connect and Patrick from Powdermania, was in the 2nd Gondy going up. Only the top little double and about 50 people max but great vibe and some fun turns. Check out their instagram page for live vids etc.

With snow in the forecast tonight Im thinking we may see Tsguike open tomorrow and I wont even guess when the muppets at Happo will open.

Big thanks to Never Summer Japan, Bern Japan and Wax Hakuba.

@snowgum that pic is the Hakuba Train Station :)

Happo is opening at 11am today, yes thats an odd time, but starting with a further fail not opening the Alpen lift which has plenty of snow. The PR Goryu got yestrerday must have been huge and being 1st definetly pays. The resorts used to pride themselves on that, apparently not so much anymore.

Expecting Tsguike to open tomorrow but that's yet to be confirmed. Will be heading to 47 instead for their opening day (although they are running the connecting link from Goryu today) as they have the top open including the Line C lift. The challenge will be getting that lift opening on time, not something they have a great record. Wish us luck :)

To the skier, it’s sort of curious that Goryu and H47 are senate resorts - say a bit like if you ski Perisher /Blue / Guthega today? (Smiggs seems a bit separate)

These two are fun mountains - Goryu was my favourite of the two - esp the play areas up top wher the trees thin. :ski: Quite extensive areas - especially on tele gear!

Fwiw - I didn’t follow the little band of easterners up the hill above Goryu while I was there. It was a bit misty, I didn’t know the mtn that well, the skiers at all, didn’t have the avi gear… but it looked fun higher up. Certainly some potential if one had the gear and knowledge in safe conditions?

One day eh? ;)

I love both places, especially once you get to know them and inbounds areas are being opened up on both resorts which are owned by different entities, hopefully one day we will see some consolidation here. The owner of 47 is a really nice guy and will stand in line with us waiting for the Gondy to start. Im pretty sure if I owned the place Id be up there before everyone. ;) I understand the owners of Goryu are nice too having only met them once or twice and were actually out yesterday at the top thanking us for coming. Now that was great to see.

@snowgum Good call not wandering off the top of Goryu. That southside of Goryu is dangerous with a BIG avalanche path through it and holes several meters deep. Its kind of spooky TBH. We were hiking above resort last year to the North and there was a avie that carried a Japanese snowboarder several hundred meters. If people ride those zones without packs and education they are complete fools! Perhaps they were just walking up to the little cairn about the top lift for a pic?

I’ve tended to use those two as my “base” when skiing Hakuba, and I like both. I think I might slightly prefer 47 but like I say I like both.

Like Lucky Pete says some more in resort off trail skiing would be good, but I think the topography makes it more difficult than some other places.

I suspect it was the cairn, I saw them them head that way - wouldn’t be prime pow skiing down to the top lift though just a nice view / escape- experience.

I knew I was about to go BC with Evergreen so the little(?) jaunt didn't offer anything substantial.

Btw, I passed on the purple? Tree ski zone at 47 - it hadn’t snowed for a few days, tight steep trees on undress cover on teles not my thing. If fresh, I might have tried same. (Next time?)

The West side of Goryu Hill offers some good back country. Brings you out at 47..eventually. Very easy to get lost though so need someone who knows the terrain.

Yes, interesting, on my second and also last day there, the weather was slowly coming in. That mist hung around.

It alsostarted snowing a little - higher areas - not a great time for a G/H47 semi-Virgin to go solo BC - even with the odd group doing so. One soon gets left behind and not ‘missed’.

So much safer ‘playing’ in the softer areas around the aspens (or?) to the skiers left of the top G piste and btn the small conifers on skiers right of same top course.

Testing the (adequate) 104mm waist in places!

Yep one kid spent a night out there a couple years ago after getting lost.

Its snowing heavily at the moment and the good terrain at 47 hasnt been ridden yet so it should be #goodtimes tomorrow. Really looking forward to 47 in the morning. Trying to stay calm as I do get a little excited. Will be a great way to celebrate my 7th anniversary in Japan!

Forgive me if in the wrong thread, but is there any correlation between a La Niña weather pattern here in Oz and more (or less) snow in Japan?

Any link @Sandy or not impacted?

I’m genuinely curious.

Just back from an awesome dinner at Emu and had to shovel the 1st snow from the back door of our gallery building. Tomorrow should be REALLY good too :) Will try and get a pic or 2 on resort tomorrow :)

A short vid from Hakuba47, only post due to the last snowboarder in it ;) Not sure why they filmed there and not up top where it was quite good...

What a great morning. Woke up to a bluebird powder view from the apartments. Went to Happo and even with getting there just over an hour before opening there were quite a lot of folks already in line. It was the longest lines I've ever been in Hakuba but with so few resorts on Honshu open and the great weather many people were thinking like we were.

It was well worth the wait both times though and we had an awesome morning! Couple top to bottom laps with some friends. Bluebird powder days with friends are the best. Although on the last lap missed a turn and ended coming down through Nakiyama, needless to say it was empty ;) lucky its a short walk back to the gondy.

Nice video Ramenman!

Its not all about the riding this week, tough day at the office yesterday at the Whitehorse Hotel for the annual wine tasting. Pic is the calm before the storm, figuratively and literally with it snowing today.
:)

V Cool - btw: I enjoyed the slight ‘wild west’ theme of the 47 base. Just in view in pic.

Looks like winter is here /(there!) ;)
The bar/restaurant there was the first place I experienced the amazing Japanese friendly service, happy greeting and bowing to people in the bar. It was a long time ago and on my first trip to Japan. You could also still smoke in there. Felt like another world and we loved it.
