Bigwavedave if cortina got 50cms there are other resorts that would have got just as much with little to no lines. Why go and line up is what i dont get. The terrain cant be that much better than other areas,

The terrain is pretty good at Cortina from memory, good tree runs etc. Are there other places similar at the other resorts?

The trees are pretty good at Nozawa as well.

    With lift lines like this.

Because a lot of the time when Cortina gets 50 the other resorts get very little. Plus the terrain at Cortina rocks, owns all the others by a long shot. TBH that line is misleading. That shows people lining up before the resort opens, but once it does the line clears fairly quickly and you get manytop to bottom fresh lines on good pitch.

But if the wind blows a certain way and all resorts in the valley get a similar amount, then I wouldnt go to Cortina. I rode 47 on a day when they were reporting 80cm at the top while Cortina was reporting 30odd. It's safe to say 47 rocked.

I like Noz, its a cool spot, but if you want terrain comparable to Cortina you have no option but to duck ropes and ride outside of the resort boundary in uncontrolled terrain. At Cortina its inbounds. So not a true comparison.

Sunday it took me an hour to do a lap over the back due to the queues, lift 5 wasn't working so everyone was queuing on lift 4.

well if one of the main lifts isnt working then obviously it will slow things down. But if you're talking dropping off the back then even on a good day it takes 30+min as you have to traverse back through Norikura.

Dolan also hasn't mentioned that it's a lot easier to get from Hakuba to Cortina than it is to Nozawa!

True dat, what i was pointing out is just that many more people are going to Cortina, on Sunday it was the most I've seen in the last 6 years, but that could be due to the lack of fresh in the last week.

Has bit a unseasonably warm the last couple of days and friends in Hakuba reported rain last night but was bucketing down today. Has probably added 30-40cm of fresh today.

At Happo - Snowfall continues overnight above 1000m, will be cloudy at first tomorrow then clear around 8am until the evening. Could be very good conditions, -7 ℃, slight breeze and plenty of fresh snowfall to enjoy.

This morning was A+ There was boot to knee deep powder. I lucked out by heading up high early on and getting above the clouds, there was barely anyone doing the same and nice and sunny. It was a sensational start to our trip. Later in the morning it cleared up to be nice and sunny. Only downside was everywhere was tracked out by lunch...

Where exactly bammbamm? Happo was tracked as f#&k by the time we arrived at midday, and nobody has said anything about boot or knee deep.

Yes happo. I got first chair and went up high, it was def 20-30cm deep in parts (knee deep was probably an over exaggeration). Everywhere was tracked out by lunch. I can normally sit on a chair and pick some cheeky stashes amongst trees etc but everywhere I looked was done by 12pm.

Crappy pic but I took it down the bottom of skyline 2 chair.

Hello, could any kind soul please let me know the best way to transfer from Echigo-Yuzawa Station to Hakuba Station?

I will be at Yuzawa for a few days before transferring to Hakuba.

    TIA!

Cortina on a powder day will always be busy. The trees are so open that almost anyone can ride there. It isnt uber steep really so it attracts people by the turck load. That and the fact that at 3500 yen you are robbing the resort blind. There is so much terrain around Hakuba I didnt choose to live here because of Cortina. I couldve choosen Nozawa to live at too but at the end of the day it doesnt have the terrain advantage or easiness of living at. This season in Japan is very much like spring. Warmer weather this season with quite a few south or west storms. This season really all over the world is strange and really im counting my blessings that we are doing very well at the moment. Into the 3rd month of sking here already.

I must admit, I am both excited and terrified at the prospect at skiing in powder for the first time. Should the snow gods smile and I am blessed with said powder during my Hakuba stay, is there a proven formula from advancing from a complete powder novice to intermediate level in a short timeframe? Any advice greatly appreciated !

POWDER SKIS - rockered, longer, fatter skis

tips will naturally want to rise, which means no need to lean back
so much better control and balance.

A little bit of speed and pitch certainly helps.
The lower the angle, the more speed you need..
Start by popping off, then back on the edge of the piste,
or find a nice short steepish little slope you can more or less straightline

Last few days have been pretty good here. Yesterday was some nice fresh up first, followed by poaching what you could find in the trees in the arvo. Looking like r**n today, with a bit of fresh at higher elevations before it gets a little colder tonight for some decent falls.

    Sunday looks pretty ugly though...

Do not lean back you want to be center balnaced. Take a lesson with http://hakubasnowsports.com/
dont lean back that is not sound advice. Leaning back will put presure on your knees.

7 days to go now...I have been excited reading all of the reports up until now its seems the R is around....go away.
It seems our trip coincides with the Happo fire festival on our last night before Nozawa on Sat 15th. Could anyone tell me more about this as I have not been able to find any info.
Also I have not booked the children into lessons as yet. I would love something of Myoko snowsports standard, any advice?
    Thank you

some nice boot/knee deep turns this morning. Arrived at the opening of a few lifts and managed a bunch of clean runs before the hoards gobbled everything up.

very wet down low, but nice up top. Happo is the place to be today it would seem.

Looks like I'm going to be pretty much completely skunked here in Japan. Had a decent morning yesterday until Goryu closed down thanks to high winds but that has been it.

Very warm here in hakuba today. Not going to bother tomorrow, forecast and weekend crowds will do that.
