Good Day folks, my girlfriend and I had planned for a roadtrip this year and we will be going up to Dinner Plain. As tourists and only specific dates (late July) to play with, should we go up the mountain via Harrietville or Omeo?

We will be at Canberra 2 nights before the date we are actually travelling up. If we take Omeo route, we will drive from Canberra to Bairnsdale (6 hours) and stay there for a night before travelling up. If we take Harrietville route, we will drive from Canberra to Albury (4 hours) and stay there for a night before travelling up.

Does the Harrietville route close often and is it as dangerous as some people say? We want to take the Harrietville route but are afraid that it will close on the day we are going up. Please do advice us and thanks in advance!

Harrietville is a nicer drive up with fabulous views if it's clear.
the road only closes on extreme storms so need to check weather forecast's.this forum is best for weather forecast's.
if you haven't done snow driving before and in 2wheel drive and ok with the longer driving time then omeo is a safer more pleasant drive.
    enjoy

Thanks for the reply! I do not have any experience in snow driving and will be driving 4WD. Most probably will be taking omeo then since the chance of omeo route closing is lower.

    Both great drives.
I would also suggest Omeo especially first time. No stress about road closures, Harrietville can be very difficult in fowl weather and lots of incidents and much higher chance you'll need chains in blizzard.
Omeo way is more reliable, very unlikely you will need to fit chains (4x4) always carry though, and quite scenic especially along the river.
If weather and road is clear Harrietville route is best drive in Victoria IMO ;)

If we were to take Harrietville route and in the event whereby Harrietville is closed, is there any way to go up Dinner Plain via a detour?

No.. 10 hour drive via Omeo
Unless you are able to decide 1 or 2 days prior based on weather is the best way but sounds like with accomodation plans etc is safer bet to go plan via Omeo. It's a small risk but you don't want to waste a day driving half way around Victoria IMO

Guess we will stick with Canberra > Cooma > Bairnsdale > Omeo, thanks for the advice!

If you decide to go via Omeo, then if it's a nice day you have the option of driving past Dinner Plain & Hotham and part way down the Harrietville rd and back again. There are not a lot of turning opportunities, but there are some. Look for chain fitting bays for turning opportunities. The most scenic part of the drive is before you get into the trees after Mt St Bernard.

You could always plan to go to omeo via albury - mitta mitta -glen valley for more scenic approach and if weather is fine choose harrietville road.....or if weather fine could also go via thredbo and alpine way and tallangatta along with route above....both add heaps more scenery (and maybe an hour?)
