This one is now go. Great to be back in Japan.

Arrived in Osaka this evening. No issues with passport expiring in May although Qantas staff did have to check the rules. Comfortable flight from Sydney, customs well organised as usual in Japan. Most airports in the world you have to search out where the oversize baggage area is to pick up your skis, but at Kansai a couple of petite Japanese women drag skis and snowboards in to the regular baggage carousel - gotta love Japan.

Then jump on the regular train to Namba and walk to Dotombori hotel (also stayed here in 2006). Go for a wander in the area. Amazing place - you could easily spend months here checking out the various eateries and street food. I stopped in an Izakaya for a small Okonomiyaki and a beer. Hotel then had a free bowl of noodles and beers at the hotel 10:30.

My second mistake after the passport thing. Last night fired up my newish laptop and was going to connect it to power then realised I had a 3 pin power plug, but only had a 2 pin adapter. D'oh. Didn't think of checking that either. A touch of complacency. But a quick visit to the Donki (Don Quijote) store around the corner got that sorted. They had all variations covered. So crisis averted. Back to normal programming.

This caught me out at Narita this year, half the bags got dragged up near the carousel, half of them got left near the oversize baggage area. Took me a while to figure out mine had already been dragged across to the carousel. I'd prefer they just left them near the oversize baggage area TBH.

Too many food options. Had a wander around Umeda and up the Sky tower then a cheese Katsudon.
Now wandering through Shinsekai and had to stop for some Kushikatsu.

The place was a specialist Katsudon one so had a few more options than the regular ski-jo Katsucurry. This one had melted cheese over it in a pan with onion soup.

Last Friday night I was looking for the oversized baggage and they all came out on the conveyor belt! There's a lot of renovations going on so perhaps that's why!

I think I have satisfied my Okonomiyaki fix for now. Had a proper sized one at a place in Dotonburi. The main street of Dotonburi was very busy as usual, then there are all the side alleys.

Now on the move. Was overcast in Osaka, snowing lightly when passing through Kyoto, now sunny just having left Nagoya.
Transfer from Shinkansen to regular JR line in Nagoya very easy.

This year in Hokkaido one of my boys said "Dad, I've never seen you fall over before"
This is what happens when their skiing ability upward trajectory is about to cross or already has crossed mine which is currently in free-fall

Now in Takayama. A curious place. On arrival it was clear that this was a popular place as over half the train disembarked here. Dropped bag off at hotel then went for a walk. Initially it seemed all very quiet, but then I got to the main street of the old preserved part of town and it was packed with tourists and very much selfie central. Was initially thinking of sitting down inside somewhere for lunch but weren't many obvious options. It was all about the street food which here mostly consists of Hida beef. Wandering around I ended up having a Hida beef steamed bun, a Hida beef and potato croquette and finally some Hida beef sushi all very nice.

Takayama visitation has gone crazy over the last 10 years. We went there in 2009 and then back again 2018. The difference was remarkable. Selfie sticks rule! Shirakawa-go was even crazier. Still like the town though. Lots to see if you have the time to walk around.

Then there was the street food.

I don't know what this was - didn't get round to trying it, but possibly the only thing not from Hida Beef.

Had to queue up a few mins for the Hida Beef sushi. It was very nice, but at Y1000 not something I'd be doing regularly.

Yeah, I guess being a Sunday makes a big difference.
The good part of being Sunday though was for me catching the Osaka Metro from Namba to Shin-Osaka.
