As I have mentioned a few times this was my first visit to Shiga Kogen for over 30 years. My previous visits were in 1986 & 1987. Having gone back and recognised some of the resort from back then, I thought I would have another look at my old pics for a comparison. I hadn't properly labelled some of the old ones, but now looking again I recognise where some of them were. Will go through and post a few then and now shots.

I now easily recognised the old pics having stayed there in 2020.
Can clearly see the Shiga Diamond hotel in the 1986 pic.
Also it appears they actually added a lift on the right some time after 1986.

I skied all of these quite a bit in 1986. None were open in 2020 due to lack of snow. Also the narrow middle one didn't even look like it still a run now.
Also notice that it was two chairs in 1986 but only one now.

and adding this pic from Sandy better showing the narrow middle line which looks slightly narrower than in 1986.

Didn't get any good comparison shots, but could clearly see the one chair they removed on the other side. Also some of the same hotels.

The one on the "other side", a single "pizza box" chair, was running up until just two seasons ago.... because I rode it then!!!

The last shot shows a run you can still ski when there's more cover.

Can't say as I've noticed the skinny one in the middle though.

    Sugoi, Heinz-san is sugoi!

    1986 = no internet, right?
    I wonder
"How did Heinz-san come to know Japan could be a good destination for skiing".
"How difficult it was for people living in Australia to book Japanese hotels / Ryokans.
"Unlike now, even at relatively popular ski resorts like Shiga Kogen, Heinz-san (and his ski mates) were almost always the only Gaijins at the Japanese ski resorts?"
"Seen from Australia, Japan is rather cheap country now. I wonder how the price difference was back in late 80's and early 90's = the notorious bubble economy era".

A lot more questions, but I don't want to contaminate this very good thread, so I stop here:p

I didn't take a pic of the middle one, but when I looked it appeared to be mostly overgrown, so probably hadn't been a run for some time.

I remember back then, talking to a Japanese instructor on the chair who was skiing the bumps (really well). I asked her if she skied the other two runs and she said 'oh no, I don't ski the powder'. I was happy to keep skiing them, mostly on my own.

    Correct

I didn't. It was just something different. Saw a brochure for Japan. It wasn't really known for powder back then, just another place to ski.

I booked on a group tour with Price Travel run by two Sydney brothers Malcolm & Warren Price who organised everything and escorted the tour.

We certainly were. In 1986 we had maybe a dozen people. No other Gaijin. In 1987 it was just 2 of us. We met an Aussie ski instructor over in Oku-Shiga. He had a day skiing with us, but he had to pretend we were in a lesson, as his Japanese ski school boss said if he wasn't teaching he had to do some other work.

It was cheap back then. Japanese prices weren't that much different to now. But the AUD was worth around Y200 in 1986. It dropped I think to around Y125 in 1987. We didn't realise how good we had it at the time.

Yeah, took me a few more years to cotton on to those. Some time in the 90's I think - may have been Hanks bar in Niseko, though we had to ask for Shochu to remon. Sometime after that discovered the cans.

Continuing the old vs new series.

    Giant
Sandy had previously pointed out the removal of one of the chairs when I posted one of the old pics in the Shiga Kogen thread. I was able to confirm this myself, but unfortunately I didn't actually get the equivalent pic. Didn't get a really good comparison.

Giant was where we saw monkeys in 1986, at the base and at the top. The top lift station from back then looks like it was the one removed as there was no such station now. There was some old structure up top, but not sure what it was.

    Terakoya

Again no real like for like comparison, but you can see that in 1986 there were a double and a single chairlift which have been replaced by a triple chair. I remember Terakoya back in those days as a good location for powder being higher and colder than the nearby parts if Shiga. Noticed that again this time - always felt a few degrees colder.

Another thing I remember from 1986 was that the there was a really cool log cabin hut, where we occasionally had lunch. There was no English at all, but we worked it out. I was disappointed when in 1987 that had been replaced by the stone building that is there now. It was bigger, more functional and even had some English menus, but I still missed the old place. I didn't however get pics of either.

and this from Sandy showing the 'newer' restaurant built in 1987. I know this because in 1986 it was a very cool little log cabin. I was a bit disappointed when I returned in 1987 to see it replaced by the larger more functional building.

@Heinz , I'm heading back to Shiga Kogen again tomorrow evening, so I can get some photos of some of those places!!!!
(Maruike, Giant, Terakoya), without the "not more photos, let's just ski" from some, that happened last week!!! ;)

The biggest difference here was the lack of snow this year. No Juhyo. But nor was there a crumpet cafe in 1987.

That would be cool. Last week apart from that issue, I didn't remember what pics I took in 1986.

The 'middle' run at Maruike, the chairlift at Giant.

Not a great deal of change in infrastructure. A single chair in 1987, a double now. The major difference was in snow conditions as you can clearly see.

There were plenty of minions to be avoided back then also. This looks like Hasuike. I think we skipped by through the tunnel to Giant.

I went through and scanned all my old slides (and some from my father also) quite a few years ago. Was tedious and took a long time (several months I think), but was ultimately well worth the effort. Can now quickly locate old pics on my PC.

Not in either! Missed the Goshiki Onsen day(a big regret) because I'd hurt my knee the day before and was back at the Pension icing it. That's Ken in the Hanks pic. Is that the place we called the Fish Bar. Loved that place. Was so disappointed when I returned to Niseko in 2011 and found it replaced by apartments.
We were in Shiga Kogen early February but left before you arrived. I think we got the best of the snow.
Cant pos't any of my 1998 photos as I've never scanned them.

Yep. Fish bar = Hanks. I remember we just referred to it as the Fish bar as we didn't know the actual name. I later found that it was called Hanks. Ziggy (the owner) apart from being a keen fisherman (obviously) was also a big country music fan, so Hanks is from Hank Williams. Yes I heard also that it had sadly long been replaced by apartments. I only went back to Niseko once more in 2001 and never since and I don't envisage going again.

I saw a few references to Rabbit in my notes, but don't recall you specifically and didn't get any pics.

Yeah back to Niseko in 2011 then Furano in 2012 doing guided day trips to nearby locations. Shiga Kogen was my first trip to Honshu.
Mainly skiing Canada in the intervening years.
Enjoyed your trip report and will be keeping a lookout for them in future.
