You had a valid point but why throw in a derogatory statement about someone you don't know? (a wannabe?)

Had been out to 3:00am the night before snorting Sambucca shots and smoking hooch with 3 ex Hustler Honey's would be a pretty good excuse.

The reason I remember this incident is because I think it's the only time I hit someone (unintentionally [IMG] ) after I had become "master of my domain" skiing so to speak
Indeed I had come to a stop and was pushing off when the kid pushed out at me
It wasn't fast but I'm a big guy and it was a reasonably small child..momentum and all that
Expect the unexpected yes, but sometimes you can't avoid bad stuff on the slopes

As my Dad used to say on the tennis court.."I can adjust for anything except my opponents mistakes"

Crackson - happy to answer your questions. I hadn't gone in to too much detail in my opening post as I wanted to keep it short sharp and simple. But I will go in to detail here...

I'm quite a competent snowboarder and do snowboard in control and within my limits. At the time before the incident, I was snowboarding casually and at a slower speed as per the slow signs. I was already on the run and was not at a stand still. I was facing down the mountain when I felt the impact from behind. It felt like a train had suddenly hit me. I didn't hear or see him coming from behind. I tumbled foward mutliple times still unaware of what had happened. I finally came to a stand still, in shock, unable to move and gasping for air breath for a good 3-4 minutes.

My mates realised I had been taken out and ran to my aid. They didn't say anything to the snowboarder that had hit me as they were more concerned about my welfare. As soon as the lift operator came to my assistance, the snowboarder took off. By the time I was able to speak properly, I was asking where the snowboader was and my mates told me he had already left....

It was as though the snowboarder was purposely targetting me at full speed to be able to cause such injuries. I'm just thankful I had a helmet and my goggles on at the time.

And no, I don't do Muay Thai - the photo was from when I was on holidays in Cambodia, dressed up in ancient tribal gear.

Loklok - The boarder is wearing black hoodie, black pants, lime green beanie, blue tinted goggles with purple frame. He can be seen boarding away from 1:20 through to 1:23. Here's a screen shot from the video:

With all due respect I seriously doubt this. What possible reason would he have? Had you really annoyed him earlier?

Most likely a guy over estimating his ability and in fact out of control and you were the object he couldn't avoid (despite in his mind believing he was capable of avoiding, probably up until about half a second before impact)

Unfortunately not much of it can be claimed under medicare or medibank private. In total I was out of pocket $650.

He probably was overestimating his abilitiy. But it did feel like he was charging at me at full speed. My thoughts would be that he was probably going way too fast, caught an edge and couldn't slow down taking me out.

With all respect Ian, he didn't say he was targeted. He said "it was as though he was" targeted. One guy on a wide open uncrowded slope gets straightlined. How unlucky is that! It 'was as though he was targeted'.

Doesn't look like the only guy on the slope to me from the video. You read it the way you read it I read it the way I read it.

Either way, I think we agree on this:

    Well no. Me either.
I didn't react like that when I was knocked out by an Aussie male skier in Niseko, who did the same to me.
He was swearing like a trooper when I came around...blaming me.
His friend were quick to step in and shuffle him away and tell him to shut up as it was definitely his own fault.
They asked me if I was OK.
I said yes, but I was not.
Was shepherded down the slope (top to bottom... Longest run ever!) by a couple of friends as I was very unsteady. Went out again the next day despite pain just to end the trip on easy successful runs, but then spent a few months in physio getting right - cost a fair whack more than $600!

You can't really protect from this.
I do tend to hold back (particular when I was learning in skis recently) until the slope was a bit clearer to reduce the chances of being taken out. Rather hang for a sec, let the scary ones get past me, then get going again.

I understand this guys motivation for wanting to contact the guy, but it's not something I would do.

I certainly wouldn't be taking legal action.

But that doesn't take away the feeling, and the desire to comment, that people involved in an accident should stop and ensure the person they were involved in an accident with should stop and make sure they are actually OK before moving on.

I'm doing whatever I can to get in contact with him and find out exactly what happened from his side. I wouldn't be out there to sue him but would like him to foot the medical bills.

If I had knocked someone over, I would have the decency to not only ask them if they are ok, but would wait until they are up on their feet again....

This is the first time I've been injured on the slopes and I've been boarding for a couple of years now. Was up at Hotham and Falls creek most weekend last year as I had the hero pass. It's ironic that I've never injured myself, but am injured by someone else.

    Sierra,

The more times we go, the closer we are to getting that nasty injury.
Every time we leave I say 'another trip, still in one piece'.

Ok ok...I've broken an arm in Hakuba (didn't realise until more than a week later) - sure it was sore...
Broken two ribs in Zermatt - continued to ride with constant ibuprofen coverage (in hindsight a very bad idea).
Been bruised, got a partial meniscus tear, been knocked out...

Leaving on Sunday and nervous as heck that the cub is going to get hurt as he has a big competition he's been working toward for years in October.

It is part of the territory.
But it doesn't excuse that guy leaving the scene.

At about 0 to 8 secs, you can see the other person on their knees and perhaps conversing with you.
At approx. 16-18 secs you can see this person waving down the hill, and then lean over very close to you.
This person stayed until others arrived, who it appears is the liftie from the left and others. The other party then left, and actually appears to give a little wave to the helmet cam.

What is the actual purpose of your desire to pursue this person? The other party could have left immediately, but stayed, until he, in your words "snuck away"?

I wonder if this person that you are stating caused the incident, actually caused the incident or someone who happened to stop to help?

Im 100% sure he was the guy that cleaned me up. I do remember seeing him get up whilst I was still winded lying on the snow. He did ask me if I was alright I kept shaking my head and gasping for air. Once my friends had arrived and I was able to speak properly I asked my mates where he was. And he was already gone by then. I was quite pissed off at the time as he hadnt even apologised. I then heard him feintly yell out sorry as he was on the chair lift..and I was still lying on the snow.

I wouldnt be looking for him now had he stuck around til I was on my feet again...

    This thread is a disgrace.

    An accident is an accident.

Do you think the guy who ran into you did it on purpose?

Where were you mates? To apprehend him? Yes, they thought it was an accident too.

He asked you if you were alright? Yes? How was he to know you were cut within millimetres of death under your Aldi gear.

I thought your work in the thredbo servo thread was particularly amusing but you can take the underlying racist connotations and stick them up your wrinkly troll arse. Some of the attitudes in here are pathetic. There is a thing called common human decency, that should come before any consideration of legal liability etc. Possibly the offender thought everything was OK, before heading off, but as his victim was unintelligible at the time, IMO he left too soon.

But he should never have collected him in the first place. Shit does happen, but that does not excuse it.

Friggin heck, I whipped past a lady the other day, she turned unexpectedly, and I came closer than planned. I stopped down the hill, waited for her and apologised for coming so close. She was fine with it, but appreciated the thought.

    It was not hard.

I would never clean someone up (it would certainly be a major accident, maybe mechanical, I have never collided) and then leave the scene, without making absolutely sure the person was OK. And I have sat and waited for ski patrol with people who have injured themselves, the person they were sliding with having had to leave them to go get them. What is with this self absorbed, no involvement attitude people have these days.

Some of us have balls big enough to cope.

PS. Love your vid Bobgnarly, awesome, you rolled a few times.

Years ago, I was cleaned up on Main Street in Falls Creek. The guy not only stopped and helped, but waited til my husband arrived. That week everywhere we went, we crossed paths with him, finally joining him for dinner!. We still catch up with he and his wife from time to time on the hill. If you collide with someone and cause them to be injured, it is good manners and common sense that you hang around to both apologise and ensure they're ok.
This guy obviously knew he was in the wrong and did stop initially, hard to say why he wandered off, maybe he was aware that the injured skier was being taken care of and didn't want to incur the wrath of his mates.
