Was very light snow this morning, only really started to get heavy now. No visible obstacles anywhere. Visibility is poor in the top half of the mountain, and a little windy too. Just started snowing again. Orchard is deserted and is the pick.

The drizzle made many clothes wet but thr groomed runs on Blue Ribbon today were outstanding. Given the horrible conditions, Blue Ribbon remained the pic of the day IMHO.

Today's formula: ride the lift in a snow shower, descend in a sunray. Repeat.

Interesting day at Hotham - major change from yesterday's bluebird! Wet snow most of the day with some fierce wind in places. I stuck to Blue Ribbon and Heavenly mostly. Very heavy snow in the afternoon.

On the other hand, I had probably the best ski lesson I've ever had this morning. Might need to change my name to Black Cruiser soon!

Some phone pics from my recent Hotham trip.
Had it all from fresh deep powder ,sunshine ,heavy wet snow and fast firm cover.
One of the best skiing had in my many years at Hotham especially the off piste areas (within resort) runs such as; notice board, lower playground, blue ribbon, canyon, gotcha and Lindsay's.

Mighty firm conditions in the drift area yesterday... Heaps of rock hard wind features, gorgeous marbly sheet ice, ruts and patches of dust.

Like your tree bonk/pole jam feature you've got there - that would be so fun to hit.

Where abouts at Hotham are you Camelot?

I'd recommend the 'Little Higgie' face for jump building potential and just a nice face to carve up just past the Jack Frost area. I stayed at Eiger a few years back and it was easy access from there around the trail.

Was a fun afternoon. We are in Davenport, when we were up here two seasons ago we built a decent kicker in one of the gullies out the back of the lodge as well, good times! On that afternoon we actually rode off the back of Little Higgi down to the workshop...

You can take as long as you like! Stop for a photo or a coffee. If you're fit then you aim for 1000m/hour, or 20mins for most vertical drops of 200-300m that you'll ski around Hotham. Remember that at Hotham it's mostly dropping down and THEN climbing back out. The down always takes the same, only you enjoy it more because the turns are earnt!

That's 'real' skiing IMO. You consistently take some of the best shots on the Internet...and you motivate me to get off my arse and get skins for my 'sidecountry' skis/bindings rig.

Boodwah would have done that just after I did a sidecountry lap, got back, looked across the valley at around 2pm last Sat, looked at my mate, looked back across the valley and said "you bastard!"

Note that if it was actually boodwah, he got there with no Gotcha/Orchard/cat skiing running.
(less spectacular ) TR of mine to come...

Nice and dry this morning, but easy to push it off and expose the ice sheet below, the 10cm so far has created some lovely pockets, but in other areas the ice is still exposed. The rain has taken some areas back to ground, so watch those sidecountry run outs back into the resort...

Did a raid from NSW and had a lift ticket for Hotham on Friday in the teeth of the storm. Fresh tracks in the car on the drive up! Very cold in the parking lot and on Gotcha chair.

I skied at Hotham four years ago but barely anything was open. On friday however it was on.

A little frustrating not having local knowledge on a powder day, we got lost and out of bounds at least once and I never did find Notice Board, but it was more than made up for by the skiing. Heavenly Valley was great but the highlight was the EXTREME! zone, we skied Mary's Slide, Coles Bowl, and the Chute, knee deep, light, steep and fall line. The EXTREME! zone has got to be some of the best in bounds terrain in Oz. I even managed a run down Brockhoff although I needed a rest or five.

Every chair needs to have padded seats like the Village chair. Luxury.

I felt a bit guilty for skiing out of bounds to get fresh tracks, but after seeing what remained of Golden Point on Sunday afternoon it seems it's the done thing. :out:
