I was working at Alfa City then. A couple bought an Alfa 33 Quattro wagon from me to get 'em up to their new purchase at the new DP.

Agree, the Hotham rag is minimum BS. Just had a quick flip through.
They've opened punters eyes to the easy Hotham sidecountry.
Didn't see any real secrets revealed.

Snowguns were kicking on Big-D all night til about 10am in +3/4 degrees thanks to low humidity - a few more nights of that and it'll be on.

    from today's Border Mail

Heavy snow fall has closed the Great Alpine Road between Harrietville and Hotham Heights.

VicRoads will keep the road closed until snow clearing machinery has been through.

Frost, ice, snow and fog may have affected some roads in the alps, drivers should keep wheel chains on hand if required.

For more information on snow alerts and road closures listen to local radio or phone 13 11 70.

Did the snowmaking blow across the road near the Summit Trainer and the road crew think it would be easier to clear it first thing in the morning?

I would suspect that the weekend will see Summit, Big D, Roadrunner, Playground and Village running at minimum.

Correction: Village will be running this weekend.

Skied this afternoon. Cold wind but very good packed dry snow. Close to a full cover on heavenly. Good cover on the top half of hogs back.

I put some pics from today in the weather observations thread: http://forums.ski.com.au/xf/threads/july-3rd-6th.75425/#post-3042498

It was crazy icy this morning but softened in places this afternoon. Snow holding up well but patchy cover in places (including a highly inconvenient patch on Snake Gully). A top up is starting to become necessary...

This seems like as good a place to ask this question as any... First time ever, EVER, skiing in Hotham from the 13th July for 5 days. Four advanced skiers, plus Mum (intermediate). Really looking forward to it. As advanced skiers (comfortable on double blacks), where do we head straight for? Yes I'd love to know your secrets... Muchos gracias!

Anything off the Gotcha and Keogh's chairs are challenging enough for advanced skiers. Provided cover is good enough of course. Sometimes lapping the 'Audi' chair can be sweet fun and less crowded

Hotham is best for advanced...there are many secret spots where you can find challenging drops and virgin stashes but most are best done with someone with experience in the area.
If we have a full cover, do a few laps at heavenly valley...you can spend at least half a day there exploring all the different runs.
Then head towards Mary's Slide and extreme area (this requires caution at bottom of run as it funnels towards the creek and trail out.).
Spargos, one tree hill and golden point for a bit of side country.
Blue ribbon if enough cover and blizzard conditions as its sheltered from the weather.
Its all dependent on conditions as to where best to go.
I will be up that weekend and happy to catch up.

    Pump House Drop, at speed
    Funnel/Wall Of Death
The ridge line under the lower section of the Playground chair
    Wendix
Mary's slide (Though not nearly as good since the lifts went in)
    Spargo's

Blue ribbon if there is enough cover to open. And all the other runs that funnel into the Blue Ribbon chair Hoggs Back, Varsity Drag, etc.... Good for high level intermediate and up.

Pretty much all the advanced and Intermediate stuff at Hotham is in the valley AKA "below the road", so is sheltered from the worst of the weather.

Mary's can be good, but ONLY if the conditions are suitable. If there was no new snow for a couple of days, it would be a pretty ordinary experience in my opinion. At least you can have a look at it from the Gotcha chair on the way over to the Orchard and make an informed decision.

Other areas I'm willing to share..
Along the ridge coming off the chair at the top of Slalom Gully. It's marked as Purgatory Spur on the trail map. Around this area generally gets the good wind blown stuff.

If tree skiing is your thing, you can cut through the trees between Russells Runway and Twirligig over in the Orchard, just make sure you come out high enough to get back to the lift.

If you trawl through this site you might also read up on a few Hotham secret runs like behind the Joyce Brockoff Hut down to the Valley trail too.

Back in for the day after a damp one up here. It was snowing all the way to the bottom of the village chair until about 9:30am and then the freezing level slowly rose leading to r**n. Luckily it was fairly light rain but still enough to get my gear soaked. The snow held up quite well. Got some nice fresh tracks along Hogg's Back. Slalom Gully was still unmogulled when I last skied down it at 1pm, it was actually really nice going down there! Hopefully there is no major rain damage, if there is I reckon lots of the runs off Heavenly will close or be just awful to get down.

Rain damage in minimal and the snow is pretty good. Black Snake is probably the most rain affected. Had some good runs through Upper and Lower Imagine this morning.

You'll be right. Heavenly is fully open, plus a lot of the Blue Ribbon runs (using the Village chair). Summit, Big D, Drift and Road Runner are all turning too.
