So, since the last day of the 2018 season the chairs have been on the Playground chair.
Today, the fourth day of the 2019 season there are two chairs in the engine house, the rest are stacked at the bottom.

In other news, its a great day up here.

Playground is not listed on the Hotham website either :(
On the plus side, I also observed a lot of snow for an opening weekend, and it was quite a thrill skiing upper Blue ribbon runs and Snake gully this early.:)

The app may have been finalised prior to the completion of the acquisition by Vail - so it may well be possible that Vail have decided to reverse the decision to mothball it, or they my be confirming its operable in order to sell it on - many possibilities.

Does anyone know what is happening with it, have they sold it to some other resort?

Playground is still shown on their website, but not on their app.

I was quite sure that it would never turn again, but why would they go to the trouble of reactivating it the other day if they weren't planning to open it?

It's a mystery that can't be solved until someone either speaks to an insider or one day it just opens.

In contrast to modern ski lifts, Playground has those expensive rectangular profile welded towers, they are far too much bother to reinstall anywhere else when brand new steel tube towers would probably be cheaper.

And what would another resort want with the other components of a 50 year old, fixed grip, double chairlift? They could probably keep it running on it's current site for another decade without too much expense, but any new installation would expect a much longer life than that.

I spoke to two lift operators who where at mid station on Sunday. They confirmed that Playground will not be operating this season. As @stansi has observed today the chairs have now been removed, unless Vail suddenly have a change of heart for next season, the Playground chair at 50 years old is almost certainly retired.

I think you'll need the Madshus for a while. I'm up at Hotham in 3 weeks and starting to feel very nervous about lift skiing. Good thing my new Tele's will come with skins. ( ;-) Just need the BC to come good.

I have two pairs of PB XC groomed track skis that are skinny classic rock hoppers but I prefer the BC metal edges for heading up to Wire plain from JB Plain. It gets icy out there.
    http://www.janebunn.net/mt-hotham
It still looks like slim pickings for Sat. week on BC XC.

It’s a sad day. My kids also like sitting in there to eat a BYO snack (when it’s not too smoky). Will it still be a public shelter or paying customers only do you think? It has been used commercially previously, but it didn’t last.

i go there with the kids too but i think its better than it falling into disrepair.....theres still silver brumby (very underrated and underutilised) hut, the hut in boondoo / hoggs back, and the heavenly visitor / toilets etc. Numbers at brockoff would have to be limited as no toilets allowed in swindlers watershed (recall the nasty but useful toilet at snake gully hut?)

i do believe the takeway cups etc at snake gully are linked to lack of washing facilities (and subsequent greywater down swindlers), but also in some municipalities T/A cafes without formal seating do not need toilets under food handling regs.......

I recall some years ago they had lovely Asian soups (i think tom yum, laksa, misso) available there, and it was always a nice little hideaway and healthier option to the usual. Be great if that is to return.

yes i agree it was good and hopefully will be good again, but the previous crew gave up, couldnt make it $work.....last couple of seasons has seen alot more snow and alot more people coming back from orchard, and there is snowmaking now at the snake pinch point, and maybe thats the patronage numbers they base it on now (or they have the same business model as mine - turn a large fortune into a small fortune :) ).

Being located at the top of a black run also has its challenges in terms of passing trade....my daughter refuses to ski black snake and so we have to traverse / climb back out to blue imagine

What do you expect with 5 to 10cm of dry snow on pretty much no base

Anyone heard words up on Sundowner possibly being open tomorrow? Can't decide whether it's worth it for this weekend, add rockhopper fun maybe down Imagine and Blue Snake and a few technicals down Roadrunner, decisions.
Cold temps and quality man made versus limited terrain, I am feeling a 3am driving mission.

The DP web site informs us that today :"Omeo and Harrietville Roads are currently open, fitting chains to 2WD from Chain Bay 2 on Hotham side and Chain Bay 3 on the Omeo".
