Skiing today on the man made open runs, was as good.as QB weekend. They started snowmaking at 4.30 pm today as soon as the lifts closed.

Light snow falling early this morning @-6C and with a cold breeze. Complete but thin cover on snowmaking areas - very slow to ski on. A lot of snow made on Imagine and Snakey but still more needed.

With a bit of traversing and some walking you could start a bit higher than Slalom Gully and get some nice turns down.

There is skiable XC snow coming down the pipeline in the next 10 days. Skiing from JB Plain to Wire plain may well happen in July!

Jane just gave some slightly better news for this weekend coming which is lovely to hear, Saturday and Sunday look like good snow days for Hotham, let's hope it stays that way.

Her present modelling by way of the automated forecast looks like Noah's Ark type R**n followed by enough snow to XC ski on above 1650 M. i.e JB Plain , Paw Paw Plain , Wire Plain etc.. With next to no XC BC base the rain will not be obliterating much good stuff, so we are starting from zero once the R**n turns to snow.

Hmm bit worried about the rain but it doesn't look like it'll be coming down with sun so hopefully that means it shouldn't wreck too much of the base that's there.

I will decide on whether or not to pack the car on Friday , but Sunday is looking like fresh tracks at the moment esp. above 1650 M. in The Hotham to Dinner Plain XC ski area, but Friday will be the day when one decides ,once the low pressure system is almost upon us.

BOM forecasts is comfusing me, it changed yesterday from "snow and rain" to "JUST SNOW" so that part looks awesome, then other forecasts still say rain...make up your mind people!

Ms Bunn has revised the automated forecast somewhat so much less snow is predicted to fall at Hot Ham. I will check again tonight.

Nice hour and a half out this afternoon. Not chopped up and firm, despite the sun beating down all day. I can't recall more pleasant ambient conditions, thermals and shell only. Day 4 this season - new boots, skis and helmet felt like i was shredding better than ever. Some photos before it socks in over the weekend

This is a fabulous shot & an insight as to how snowmaking in Heavenly Valley has improved Hotham.

Bump: apologies for taking over - now if only Falls Creek's summit area had snowmaking?

Hopefully this means whatever damage the &$%@ does to the groomers on Saturday there will still be something very decent to ski on Sunday and Monday...get some!

Thanks if you can MrT. I'm heading up soon but will mostly be on lifts.

Have to say, at this risk of sucking eggs, if you can get an extra day or too off I'd suggest heading to NSW.
They seem to have somewhat better in terms of receiving less rain than Vic and more snow. And there's the extra height of their main range - if the weather is good enough? - that frankly our hills don't have.

In poor years or slow starts like this - better to go further and perhaps less often - as frustrating as that is?

It sucks but that's snow in Oz.
Talk to a Tassie skiers for their take on this!! (l:-l(

agree. If you must book in June, go to perisher.

no idea about skiable depth but there is certainly snow visible from far away on ranges in southern tassie

Came up to Hotham yesterday and slush gulley was surprisingly okay...till about 2pm when the weather really got gross. It was still too warm and pouring rain. So we drank tins and hung out in front of fires with everyone else crossing our fingers for it to start snowing.

Later that night it did turn and started puking down and we had walked to the General for dinner in rain and over mostly bare gravel tracks and ice...when we went home we were walking through a good cover of fresh dry snow it was great. This morning it actually looked like we were at "the snow" and we got first runs down village loop and it was so nice and powdery...got busy and chopped up before long but those first couple of laps were delicious. Kept snowing all day and stayed cold so guns were blazing too, the wind sucked though it was proper freezing and the summit and road runner chairs were not pleasant, good runs as rewards though :)

I think tomorrow will be windy but cold still, then we come back to melb and the week warms up I think :( Considering the weather yesterday though today was a fantastic ski day!

Fair enough, must be pretty ordinary too.

To be fair, in Vic June is either unskiable or poor at least 50% years. If it's the same by mid July we have a problem and by end of July, it's either a very late season (but rescued by early August dumps like 17') of a poor one (too many to count, 2006, 2012?).

If you dont mind real BC go to Thredbo and go high on the pole line towards Kosi. With the usual precautions!! Or stay closer inbound and follow the Dead Horse Gap sign to the west say to the treeline, if there's cover. Post a question to the BC or Thredbo forum. Someone will know.

Failing that It's a non-snow Vic trip or snow 'walk' until this rubbish high dominated pattern clears. (The scourge of Aussie winters!)

Benefits of not having rear seats in your 4wd. Heat up the feet before skiing + heaps of room to get changed in a blizzard.

Disadvantages - turbo diesel does not start easily in cold conditions; unlike the 2 litre sohc subi / can't enjoy an enthusiastic mountain drive

Nice few laps today. Properly cold. The old last run rule got me. Took a phone call mid cat track and stacked (how rude someone calling and interrupting my tunes, will be on airplane mode from now on)

Enjoying the lack of BC snow - forcing me to work on my resort shred

XC skiing from JB Hut to Paw Paw Plain in the Dinner Plain to Hot Ham area.

    30/6/19.

There was just enough snow to Nordic ski on , but I did break through to the soil and rocks a few times when I snow ploughed around a descending bend.
They look like my parallel skinny ski tracks on the right.
