Bill is a big tease. Mentioned yesterday in his report that the snowmaking / grooming team were working really hard to get some more terrain open and to stay tuned. Now today; nothing.

I am looking at driving up to JB Plain on Sunday July 14th. The weather soothsayers suggest there will be skiable BC XC cover then.

Heading up Friday the 12th staying in Bright but will drive up Saturday and Sunday. Hoping for enough snow cover to not need my rock hopper as I am potentially loaning it to a mate. Will be popping down to Blizzard before we drive down on Saturday to get a mixed slab :) Really keen to try their new NEIPA and hoping they have a good selection of cans available (I may even buy two slabs :p)

Looks good on the cams, watching the forecasts Jane reckons mid next week might see some proper cold front activity, here's hoping!

So how are the slopes this weekend? May be a bit crowded with school holidays? Snow cover and quality? I do applaud the snow-making and grooming efforts by the Hotham staff to provide what there is in the current absence of natural snowfalls.

Just imagine and blue snake, corduroy early was magic, obviously cut up already, but they’ve done well to get it open w a very limited natural base

If this snowfall on Thursday comes through do you think the Gt. Alpine Road from Dinner Plain to Harrietville may be closed?. If that were to occur then driving back to Myrtleford via Omeo, Mitta Mitta, Trapper's Gap , Mt. Beauty etc. would be much longer and slower. However Christmas Creek Saddle near Mt. Wills on the Omeo Highway could become snow bound too. I know , I have an excitable imagination. ;-P

I feel like coming for a drive up that way just because the weather will be crazy and I love it...wasn't planning on coming up next weekend but very tempting to move heaven and earth to get in amongst the crazy snowfall...I'm a bit excited :D

If I can avoid driving through a snow storm then I will. I would prefer to XC ski on fresh snow after it finishes nuking down.
Dinner plain looks like it will get some snow this coming week.

Hi Young Angus (famous music family??)

Not sure you’ll be saying that sitting in a convoy just below the summit, 2+ hrs on from Harriet.
    Admiring the grey wallpaper??

Much nicer to saunter up from Omeo and be viewing the blizzard from the comfort of one’s digs. ( ;-)

If the snow is coming down hard with sub zero temperatures and fierce winds then the Omeo way up to Dinner Plain/ JB Hut & Hot Ham is way better.Try putting chains on in that weather. It is a battle. :-0

I wish! ...just a big fan of the family's work :D

I can imagine it sucks not only to be sitting in the convoy, but having to put chains on in that kind of weather...think I'll take a hard pass on that one and just hope it does some good work for the next weekend or two when I can go up minus a blizzard.

Ski report for Tuesday 9 July 2019:
    Not good...
Top of HV was bulletproof. Summit minimal visibility all day. Way too many people funneled into Slalom Gully. Icy under the sugar snow cover, resulting in carnage in Slalom and Snake gullies. Ski Patrol was kept very busy cleaning up the mess, with resulting big queues at Village chair.

A run down Slalom Gully at around 2pm was the most scared I have been on skis in around 15 years, and that includes the time I inadvertently found myself in an avalanche zone at St Anton.

Bring on the snow for this weekend to spread the crowd out!!!

And orchard normally opens late july or early august. Blue ribs ran for nearly 4 months last year, where as usually its a 6 week operation. Slalom gully is a very hotham experience

Hey just wondering what you guys think about the wind situation this weekend.
I'm looking at heading up Friday and camping till Sunday, am I mental!!?? If it's too crazy I might bunker down at jb hut till bed time then roll the swag out.
I'm more concerned about the wind during the day. How does Hotham fare with wind hold??
I dont want to head up and be stuck in the village all day doing nothing. I was going to call in sick Friday but I may change it to Monday if Friday is gonna get too wild.

Wind is decent already and picking up later today. I'd go with the Monday option.

XC Report for Wednesday 10 July: almost complete coverage on the trails on Big Spur. Did a short loop around Christmas Hills and Wonderland trails. Not groomed of course which can make the downhills challenging. A few people have cut trails so there are generally tracks to follow.
The snow was tending to clump under my skis, with resulting damage to the cover wherever I had to step over / around anything.
Will be great with a few more cm and a light groom to compact the surface.

3-5 cm of snow overnight and Graupel snow falling most of the day. Very busy and moguls formed quickly and extensively. The loose snow is dry and easy to push through though. Visibility came and went, and with summit and road runner on wind hold, we only survived the crowds and bumps for a few hours before retreating to dinner plain

The run names I recall off the top of my head are:
    • Question Mark - quite visible from the Playground area, a big hook shaped run (well, shaped like a ?) than starts smear the top of Golden point and loops back to rejoin it further down.
    • The Two Micks - actually two separate tree-free faces that exit near Blue Ribbon
    • Golden Point - exits above Village chair.

I'm not aware of any such trail map ever. Other than One Tree Hill, they've never really been named. Some lines have vague connotations, like The Question Mark, The Glades, and further afield The Machinery Chutes

I believe the first issue of the 'Winter White Book' (as they used to call it) in 1997 had lines scribed in the trail map for these runs but no names against them. Then closer to the season it was updated with run names. I feel that this was only in for the 1997 and by the time the 1998 white book came out they removed this additional 'trail map' for out of bounds skiing.

Unfortunately I've thrown them all out...……….

When the lift co first started running the kat skiing (c.2002?), there was a map insert with the runs off of the east side of Swindlers (past One Tree Hill). But it does not seem to be available online.

Yep searched further online, and because the Hotham.com.au website at the time was full of flash crap and the archive sites don’t retain pdf documents, that trail map appears to be lost (online at least)

We knew that run by a different name back in the day. A different kind of golden. It wouldn’t have made it to the official trail map though, me thinks.

Ha ha that would be the possum variety. XC trail filled in nicely between DP and JB plain, probably like that all way to Hotham.

XC Report: trails have filled in nicely, but the snow clumps easily, especially to the pattern on the ski base, resulting in hard going for the kids. It was nicely sheltered out of the wind on the eastern side of Big Spur.

Quick question, the difficulty of these runs is comparable to 'one tree hill"? Or is it more like "the chute"?
