Depends on the snow really, but I would say more tricky than either.

They are completely ungroomed and unmarked on the ground. There can be narrow spots - think around Lindsay’s cliffs and the bottom of Lindsay’s - and there is a steep drop off at the bottom into Swindlers. I don’t know them that well, and I would want to have better visibility before venturing out there.

Remember they are outside the patrolled area, so if you get into trouble, you need to get yourself out of trouble too. Rescue would require someone to go for help.

We tend to head over there in spring when the pack is reliable, and the snow is all corny......the last bits through the trees to swindlers creek is the tricksy bit

That looks effing tempting. Maybe Monday July 22nd or Sunday 28th I will drive up via Omeo and snow camp at JB hut for two-three nights and do a big day tour along that XC ski track. One would imagine that the Cobungra ditch track would become skiable with enough snow cover.

Have you got a can of Fischer pattern base de icer or a tube of Swix paste wax?. These things can help make the pattern base on the XC skis easier to keep clear of clogging up.

I don’t. A member of our lodge recommended giving them a spray of Mr Sheen, for the same reason.

WD 40 could work just as well as Mr. Sheen. I always spray my NNN BC bindings with WD 40 after a big day of Nordic skiing.

I personally have used https://www.swixsport.com/en/wax-/kick-wax/waxless-ski-wax/n4c-schuppen-spray-150ml/ . You can try sunscreen if desparate.
Back on topic. Wire Plain/Big spur nordic trails were getting a good cover today. Very windy out in the open. OK in the trees. Probably enough snow to be groomed tonight. Refer to Hotham XC trail report I guess for status of individual trails

Why not use a paste or liquid glide wax over the whole ski base, grip zone included? Better glide, and no icing problems.
    Something like this. https://www.swixsport.com/en/wax/gl...-glidewax-liq.-warm-100ml/?code=7045951973617.

Because Lake Mtn. and Mt. St. G . are not happening for plank action I am already plotting another J.B. Hut based XC ski trip over the coming fortnight or so.

No it wasn't waist deep today, but it was pretty good with plenty of boot deep turns. Lower areas occasionally required a bit of creative thinking.

Hotham report says average depth 60cm.... Is it usually around the 1m mark before they can get the Orchard chair open?

Absolutely lovely day out there today. Not enough fresh to warrant wandering off the groomers, but no wind, firm base, dry snow on top, and a sky like this:

Well the arvo session turned into a father-son shootout. Never softened to much and was refreezing by 3.30. Tomorrow will be interesting. Blue Ribbon holding up well under the chair. Hoggs Back struggling. Fun day!

The automated modelling shows Monday next week will bring some heavy snow to Hot Ham. I am planning to drive up to J.B. Hut that day via Omeo. If this does happen I will probably be fitting chains coming up from Omeo!. However XC skiing on Tuesday next week on fresh deep cover will be worth it.

So not that I want to jinx anything...but how much natural snow do they usually need to open The Orchard?
