Week nights should be faintly better.
Although plan B could be to go back to Victoria Falls and green camp there.
Excellent morning up here. Some deep deep snow out of HV this morning. Everyone's hitting the sidecountry pretty hard too.
First run of day down Gotcha, not bad.
Just went down Micks (Hulls), one of the best runs I've ever had.
Remarkable weekend, as good as yesterday.
I managed 3 loops out there before gotcha opened. Anything leeward was epic
A snap decision based on amazing deep powder snow at Mt. Buffalo has been made !!! .
My friend and I are going snow camping at Lake Catani hut at Mt. Buffalo tomorrow for 2 nights. She will be on snow shoes and I will be on BC XC skis. The entire mountain at Mt. Buffalo is rarely skiable like it is now, it costs nothing ski and camp there, and the trails have been groomed, whereas JB Hut and surrounds are skiable every winter.
Earlier in the day, fun around Lindsays.
A great run somewhere between Micks (Hulls) and Golden Point.
Left some nice marks looking back from Blue Ribbon chair.
3.00pm and done. As always Half-Backscratchers will go to the end. Superb weekend with September now looking good to.
Knackered. That is all.
Heavy downpours here in Omeo over the last hour or so, ongoing. That's in contrast to fairly dry weather in Omeo earlier today and yesterday. Hope it's snowing a bit more up top
@Onlybackscratchers @hongomania great stoke!
A few more from the weekend.
The pole test.
Silver Brumby Hut.
And Half-Backscratchers digging trenches until that fallen tree stopped him cold.
Nice sunrise at Hotham. A little bit of high cloud with flat light ATM. The snow is holding up really well .
I am looking at JB Hut snow camping mission on Monday or Tuesday week. I hope the XC ski snow cover from D.P. out to Precipice plain hangs in there and gets a top up too.
Snowing lightly at Hotham. Not much accumulation but better than r@#n. Summit, Gotcha, Orchard/Keoghs, Roadrunner on wind hold. The groomers in open areas are skiing well.
This afternoon was very super excellent. Not anywhere near as deep as the last storm; but even better quality
Extreme zone is basically shark free now - meant I could ski with more commitment. Had some highly satisfying skiing; aggressive yet controlled. Steepest part of Mary's was absolutely sensational - nothing like shredding steep pow and racing your sluff
The flow of the terrain at Hotham is the best on days like today - ridgelines into delicious pow wow filled, untracked bowls. This season I have found some new lines; feel I am reading the terrain better than ever
Resort in great shape. 1.5m with fresh is just perfect - no sharks; but not too filled in. Lots of features around
Great stuff hongo
Not sure I would agree with the other comments entered today. My take was that I would occasionally get a pleasant feeling that there was neither solid ice nor chopped up re-compacted dirty snow under the first 2 inches of surface powder. Sorry, not powder, but sleet. It was painful on any exposed skin. Felt horrible under skis and gave many people the impression they were skiing on powder. And it was slooooooow. Not sure how many cumulative days I would need to ski in Hotham for it to be similar to an even mediocre day in North America or Europe.
Somewhere behind Marys early on, light a bit flat but good enough.
Coming down the other side.
With the creek crossing at the end.
I agree with @hongomania while not as deep as last week the quality was excellent. 8.30-4.30 with a couple of small breaks, I love days like this.
I think you've just done the entire day wrong.
Aspect, equipment, wax, timing, attitude. Even snow description.
Sorry. Forgot this is the internet and didn't read the overwhelming default positive comments left. Enjoy your stove pipe.
Trust me I wish I had a great experience, but after this mornings water festival I just had to check back in to learn how to realign my expectations, as well as hone superlative adjectives.
Snow fairly slick first up, but once it softened the skiing was great. Everywheress fully covered, mountains looking great.
On the 7th day we got this, despite having flat bodies we couldn't stop smiling. Like Falls yesterday a multitude of snow types a real test for technique at times. Slush bumps under Keoghs chair, Playground and Blue Ribbon, some cream early on down Marys, fast and furious over on Orchard. Sugar and ice on Heavenly. All a stack of fun, tomorrow is looking good, was refreezing fast later in day.
Bit of breeze up top, seems to be softening slower than yesterday, plenty of sugar around. Crowds building, early lunchtime.
And slush bumps in the arvo!
Not a good day to lose your edge in av gully. Bloke got winched out. Looked in pain even with the magic whistle.
Pity this wasn't the cover for the Pub2Pub 2 weeks earlier. Great cover, almost noone on the trails and, excellent grooming which remained intact after last weekend's biathlon.
On the trail to DP.
Sunrise over DP before the storm last Sunday/Monday
What a awesome father-son 9 day ski mission. And to finish on a day like this.
I think we left our mark on Hotham. Now the long 5 day wait till next weekend.
Yeah today was a cracker day.
The snow cover is looking good. I am packing the car tomorrow for the drive up on Tuesday to JB Hut from Melb. via Omeo.
Near identical styles! Noice
He's inherited my old school tendency of keeping the skis too close together. We both chew through ski pants and the sides of our boots.
One more from the trip, Heavenly on Saturday. Thanks to Snowpix, great crew.
Finally got both the kids on a trip together and what a beautiful day.
Daughter has really improved her skiing this season off limited days.
So time to test her with her first trip past Spargos
And well she did, now she knows the best way to the Village chair.
Snow holding up well, will be interesting how long Blue Ribbon can stay open for.
Son #1 is up this week as part of Uni mid term break for a week.
Tells me he will ski all day and party all night.
Makes me a proud dad.
Be proud when he backs it up.
On it till you vomit.
new season pass announcements
Someone having a bad day
how likely the H'ville approach getting closed tomorrow?
dunno.....im trying to get up there b4 lunch! looks like midday is when shit gets real
How can the Snow Report claim:- "The snow has had a decent freeze overnight",
When the temp never even got down to Zero ° ??
Marketing is a powerful tool.
Did last weekend, only dropped to 2 Deg overnight and was fast and furious all morning. The existing lower snow is well below zero and refreezes the surface snow overnight.
