Gravbrot have announced today that they will not be opening this season -

It's a shame, as they were one of the accommodation providers I was considering as an alternative rather than going to Perisher this year.

Vail goes bang.....at this stage it makes Thredbo look like they have made decisions a little too early. Pretty good result, hoping that lodges open at Hotham from Mid-July!

Corona aside, got to say I won't be buying day passes at Hotham between Friday and Sunday anymore.
With heavenly 7.30-8.30am now exclusively for epic pass holders those days it's not worth the $ on a fresh day for me.
That first hours all I'm really after inbounds on those days.
$/ time/ family dictates an epic pass not feasible for me for the time being.

“While terrain and lifts are limited during the early season ramp up, guests with a 2020 Epic Australia Pass, 2019-20 Epic Pass or 2019-20 Epic Military Pass will be required to make a reservation to access the resorts. Reservations will be required from opening day until 12 July, or as soon as weather and available terrain and lifts permit. Pass holder reservations for this period can be made beginning 23 June, following final pass payment. From 13 July, or as soon as we able to open adequate terrain and lifts, pass holders will enjoy their season pass access without the need for a reservation at Perisher, Falls Creek and Hotham.”

Even if it is exclusive, worse for us -Wednesday and Thursday first tracks are not happening now ( except for school holiday periods which are a defin no-go for this ski team ! )

Quote "Heavenly Valley in Hotham from 7.30am until 8.30am, from Wednesday to Sunday during school holidays and from Friday to Sunday during the balance of the season "

Without the first hour I'll likely just ride BC.
I usually only do 2 or 3 hrs inbounds anyway

I think that non season pass people get first dibs on school hols. they can book from 15 June but epic pass holders can't reserve till 23 June. that's my reading anyway

How Falls and Hotham manage XC / Back country resort access for those not using lifts but who have season resort entry isn’t clear, but those users might still be subject to the quota system for car access.

I'm pretty sure that fcrm said that if you have season entry you will not be restricted. that was my understanding when I pushed go for the final payment

That’s my understanding too, but how that’s managed when one arrives without a reservation at the gate is another matter.

they are certainly "discouraging" turning up at the gate without a reservation. how you get treated may be unrelated to how full they are

is there a 'gate'? @Chaeron you would be asking for example about when you want to park at the end of the razorback?

Silly question perhaps. ..I can't find in the epic pass website anything about how the physical RFID cards are issued for Epic Australia passes. Do we pick them up at the service desks at a resort? With final payment taken out just before the opening this season they can't be posting passes. Or are the passes loaded onto existing RFID cards, if we have them?

Now that we have season pass info, it all seems reasonable although I'm a little wary of the "From 13 July, OR as soon as we able to open adequate terrain and lifts, pass holders will enjoy their season pass access without the need for a reservation at Perisher, Falls Creek and Hotham."

In other words, is there the possibility it gets to 13 july and they say, "sorry season pass restrictions will continue, we don't have enough terrain and lifts open".

I'd also like to know the car season permit details, website has no info other than "Season Permits, Register your dates here, New Season permits are currently not on sale".

Thanks @Chaeron. I'll update the pass photos on my family's Hotham cards before we get up for a ski. For anyone without a pre-existing card my assumption is a visit to a service desk would be needed with ID and the credit card used for payment.

Seems like a reasonable plan by Vail for the oz resorts. Though how club lodges with shared facilities and close quarters will operate remains to be seen. Hope most of them can find ways to operate. That would also leave more accom available for those who aren't lodge members.

This will be an issue, - agreed - and it includes getting access to Mt Stirling when cars going to Buller will eat up the gate pass quota at the common entry gate. A separate Stirling gate pass product would help for allowing Stirling access when Buller is full due to the carpark and access road being geographically separated from Buller. Number plate checking in either carpark would flag who was on the wrong mountain.
It would be hard to monitor the same at Falls and Hotham. E.g. One could buy a BC Access car pass, park in the Mt Loch carpark and go lift skiing. So it's quite possible that BC skiers could miss out by virtue of not getting the car booked in when their presence on the terrain would not be contributing much to crowding aside from the first bit of access from Mt Loch carpark to the Orchard area.

I anticipate that some season entry pass holders will be busy booking many days of entry to cover their bases and not use all the booked days.

Perhaps the forum members could do that and rent out your cars to forumites who need access for a week or weekend (tongue in the vicinity of a face cheek)?
On the upside, because a "book vegicke entry in case we go up" practice would mean revenue loss to the resorts by locking out day pass buyers they may decide to police it.

All too hard for an (reluctantly) occasional visitor like me.
I'll just go in October once it closes this year.

I think it’s a fair guess that The XC / BC brigade will (continue to) be the ‘forgotten people’ in the access equation. I do hope I’m wrong (and that both resorts find a way of distinguishing between alpine vs. XC) but it sounds like it might all be too hard this season?

I don't know about hotham but I think xc is pretty important to falls. xc skiers might not get everything they want, but I can't see them being forgotten, at least at FC.

I think you perhaps meant ‘Hotham’ at the start of the sentence?

I think Hotham resort does a lot For XC; & to a degree BC (access).

But if day access no’s. are limited, I’m not sure they (we) will fare too well (Parking) even if there’s very few people on the XC trails or plodders heading to Loch or the back o Hotham?

I have heard unofficially that quite a few lodges may make that same decision.

Part of the issue can be that even if you can operate at part capacity to manage the distancing requirements and spilt up shared facilities, your income will be below the operating expenses... Better to leave the heating switched off and cut losses. Lodges don’t have big financial reserves behind them.

Yeah, I was worried that may happen. It's one of those things that makes you wish we had gone more aggressive on an early lockdown so that we could come out of this like NZ, instead of being in the situation we are in now where there *may* be the possibility of no restrictions come August / September, but no-one able to take advantage of them.

I was thinking more along the lines of retail etc being the issue.

For a condition with an estimated 2 week incubation / infectious period, a 3 - 4 week comprehensive but not total lockdown seems like it would have quashed the spread quite quickly. Broad government support through Centrelink or ATO and exceptions where required.

So now it looks like I'll be in Hotham from August 9 - 14, with my 4yo in tow.

If anyone is around to show me where to go and where to avoid (or just, y'know, to have a riding/skiing buddy) let me know :D

From the number of POV videos I have seen on Youtube all going the same way, I assume that this is slalom gully?

I really don't understand why every second video from Hotham is Playground Trail > Gully Catwalk > Slalom Gully.

It'll be unavoidable if you are intermediate/advanced to miss slaughter gulley....haha,its not that bad but a famous extreme skier when visiting mt H a few years ago was asked " whats the riskiest most dangerous run you have skied in your life? " ..well,I think you know the answer...Slalom Gulley !
Safety rules are: GIVE WAY when entering from side runs,If you need to STOP do this BEHIND the several "SLOW" signs and AVOID the steep sides of the gulley as riders huck the edges, burst through trees etc
I recall you have a 4 yo,if he/she is up to skiing there defin ski down BEHIND said intrepid explorer.....

Yep, its very nearly unavoidable, and if they decide to not run orchard or blue ribbon due to snow depth or towies it is unavoidable. But midweek, out of holidays like you are @nezumi, its not so bad.....and for example will encourage quick improvement so sundowner becomes the main alternative.

slalom is at its mayhemic best at 3pm on a sunny saturday with 3 foot bay-chop....some of the notes above by @Hot_ham on Rye are a good guide, but picking a line and sticking to it with reasonable short turns, and its all ok

For little kids @nezumi, or the nervous, i recommend picking a middle-right line. It avoids anyone emerging from imagine etc left side, the snowboard huckers on the far right bank, the sundowner merge on the right, then the hero-chair ski huckers off the lower left bank. and being middle right you can pull off easily behind the slow signs, and as you come into the chair the middle line is still the safest, as the speedsters and huckers take the right veer down to the village chair
