they groomed summit the other day, been nice to hike and ride there for a couple of runs every day. somehow even by 2pm the rest of the mountain doesn't soften up enough for me to enjoy spring style skiing. even sun run. so until we have more snow its repeats of a short beginner run over and over and over again .... but at least im having fun getting some big carve turns in. in other terrible news, they've stopped the hotham app from working. before the season started I had 6 days of hiking, then they reset all the data and lost all my stats. probably because some pansy complained when they were too lazy to hike themselves. now at day 15 (plus 6) they're blocking me again. at least im on top of the leaderboard still. i guess im gonna have to count the number of days myself manually. boring!
i wanted a leader board that everyone else is on/sees, just to show of be funny to get 80 days a resort that doesn't have any lifts turning.
Gotten many days yet Stansi? There goes our morning skates with Greg!...plenty of time to get fit for '21 season
https://www.mthotham.com.au/on-mountain/conditions/lifts-terrain There are still some XC ski trails that are open in the Hotham area. I doubt they would be all that great but for locals , something is better than nothing at this stage.
Couldn't have picked a better year for it! If we really lucky there will be some epic late season goodness just in time for lifting of restrictions.. At least we can snow play, even if lifts are off.
if you had a kids kite right now you could go wind surfing. wind is so strong right now, and ground is so wet from rain maybe even a ski jacket would be enough sail area ;p
You are a perpetual cup half full kind of man. I am planning to ski in Japan in March 2022. I need something to focus on in the depths of SDS .( ski deprivation syndrome). I am not used to being stuck at home in winter and not skiing. It is not good at all . Cycling is useful. I imagine I am skiing and turning while coasting down hills and bends on my bicycle.
Thanks, except for my thoughts when Im watching Essendon play, or Australian batsmen.. then Im not so positive.. I always thought downhill mountain biking was about as close to skiing as you could come, the turning, picking your lines, looking at obstacles, weighing up speed vs risk vs reward.. I was actually telling my friends pre-covid that this week was about as sure a thing as you get in AU resorts, we would have booked if not for lockdown... To think I could have been at Hotham staring out the window at the pouring rain and paying for the privillege.. Covid has helped me avoid my personal vision of hell!
Yes, my annual trip to snow camp at JB Hut and XC ski from Dinner Plain to Wire Plain and back is not on at all. Even if I was unfettered by CV19 plague restrictions ,You'd be lucky to get a snow peg lost in the snow at this rate.
i had kept my pass in hope, but all is lost. there's so little snow on the ground that they couldn't open much anyway. i went back to the early 80's to find a worse season. i still plan to (try to) stay and continue to hike/ski whats available. but with this news my lodge may close and im suddenly homeless. but i figure there will be lots of empty places up here that people will be happy to have occupied. we got < 1cm overnight. but at least the ground is cold now for the rest of the storm. so far 30 days of hiking the same runs over and over again. is getting pretty boring. at least im super fit tho. top of summit chair, looking out at Mt Feathertop at 2pm today:
If you look at the detail of epic coverage and depending on what resort/period you elected the refund could be very minimal even if you havent used your pass yet. If that is the case it seems pretty unfair to me. The epic coverage doc is dense and probably unfathomable to many.
Hotham/ Dinner Plain Resort staff have put the skating and classic groomer chook footer grooves on the surface at Whiskey Flat . For whom I know not but in a more sane and forgiving cosmos I would be skiing on that today August 25th 2020 ! This is just torture. Look at that fresh snow and sunshine and blue skies.

When you think you know Hotham like the back of your hand, only to find out you don't know where "Harris' horror" is...
Indeed. Is this Hackers Horror misplaced or some special line down avi gully that neither of us is aware of?!
Isn't Hackers Horror directly beneath Village chair? As in, look at that Hack riding that shitty line trying to show off.
I concur with @Pink, after having seen the video on missnowitall. Steve is as follows: "Some great steps forward albeit very tiny. Bit of a hiccup in that he now has a bladder infection. Just gives him something else to have to fight." From FB (Steve Lee's Support Tribe)
my 11yo was pretty stoked when we found we had skiied 'skeleton gully' off the back of higgi to the gully under the genny. i like names, and the stories they hold, its very human, and sometimes the wronger the are the more they tell a story way things are heading everything at hotham might be backcountry....although i rolled the dice again and got a 2021 pass
