Hooray for fresh snow!

Same... I'm going to have so much lockdown time on my hands (ahem, after the next day or three) I'm going to put together a spreadsheet...

As for what's for sale, clearly it's the property but I'm not sure if it includes the business or not

It's unclear if the businesses are sold as Going Concerns, WIWO etc, but what is clear is that the sale is not for the property, but rather for management rights over the bulk of the property.

there was evidence someone camped and had a fire at the hut in the last day or two. pretty cool idea actually.

while we were eating our lunch at the bottom, we noticed halfway up slalom gulley was a strange black thing in the snow that was moving occasionally. was it a large dead crow? a black plastic bag? some one left their backpack? no. it was a person! this strange person had a nap for at least 30 minutes halfway up the hill. suddenly jumped up, and hightailed it up the hill. at full speed almost, much faster than someone who is exhausted/etc. the strangeness continues, they didn't have skins, but they were on skis, and shuffled and skated their way up, zig zagging up the run like someone on skis might do on a much steeper pitch. later we noticed tracks where they had done the same the whole way up from the hut.
what were they doing? why did they zig zag like this? why not just take skis off? did the 30-45 min nap really help? why?!

Just above Slatey's... Who knows how the driver managed that...
i saw someone without chains bump into the back of a bus at central yesterday.
minutes after another person locked up all 4 when a snow plow had stopped in front of them and their forward planning was worse than that of a potato.
another pic, seen on facebook, similar angle.
red van guy was lucky.
240512105_10161134919667678_1971627066817458575_n.jpg

not much fresh overnight, certainly not the 4-5 that was reported. however the cold and overnight wind meant the snow was much dryer today then yesterday, which was great news.
unfortunately it was blowing at 992359510km/hour up the top, scraped a lot of everything back to ice, and everything else that it got near to touching had this thin crust. down very low the snow was very heavy and not so fun to ski either.
add to this the 50million people who must have skied it yesterday, and/or were out today, leaving any protected spots not so fun to be around.
so I quickly lost my enthusiasm for the day. still, its nice to see the trees white again.
only 3 runs today.

swindler's creek sure was flowing fast!

A change in wording from Hotham in today's Snow Report.

Hotham Snow Report

A 'We'll be back' and

The lifts are now closed until the current Regional Victorian restrictions are eased.

Maybe there is hope...........
Unfortunately the 'header' from that screen hasn't changed:
1629859316621.png

I also got a stakeholder email stating the above. This would also concur with the lifties and instructors being kicked out of their accom.
:(

Ski patrol, and Bill (head of ski patrol), work for RMB
RMB are completely separate from Vail Resorts, have no control, influence, or receive any updates from Vail Resorts regarding reopening post lockdown.
Its a bit shit how separate they are. as I hear it, opening new terrain involves actually getting it ready to go, but then afterwards you need like 15 different departments and countless people involved to tick their boxes before it can be opened.
Additionally, while its great to have some on snow reports published early enough to make some decisions on where to ski. Quite often during lockdown it appears he's phoning it in, with assumptions based on forecasted conditions/etc.

Word from Vail Resorts staff on mountain is very inconsistent and fractured also.

All this is the same as last year when everything was hanging in the balance.

Mostly, nobody here gets told shit, so its all just he said she said chinese whispers.
So, currently, it'd be more successful consulting norse runes than reading more info out of any report than expressed.

other businesses and lodges up here are really suffering, but they are ready to go the second we get let go.
they'd be very happy to take bookings from you just in case.

last post-lockdown there was 3-4 days of limbo when nobody was up here yet, cause they haven't organized time off work or whatever normal people do.
it was a surprise tho, we didnt expect it to be lifted, so i guess its to be expected.

still windy today, searching for something a bit more protected, but not tracked out with yahoo staff boot packing up the middle of runs. decided on women's dowhill.
shout out to @Hermannator and his two lady friends, whom we saw making their way back up the hill!

unfortunately women;'s downhill was very tracked out and very wind effected. there was like 20x 1-2 day old tracks down it! plus the wind completely ruined it.
but our second lap we did bradshaw's, which was mint aside from some thin spots with rocks hidden underneath.

still no action shots of ms pink jacket. she just charges ahead and refuses to stop/wait for people to get the camera out ;P

also, it seems my friend's splitboard has been manufactured incorrectly.
they made the left foot the shape of the right foot, and the right foot the shape of the left foot!

we went exploring in the same area again yesterday, found some freshies.
the whole zone is turning out to be one of our favorites.
by the afternoon the snow was very wet and soggy and quite ruined, so today was a down day w fish and chips for lunch. hopefully a bit of fresh stuff to cover it up a little for tomorrow.

Suddenly its snowing again. We waited for it to accumulate a bit, then went out in the afternoon for some freshies just as the storm was stopping and the wind was picking up.
The layer was thin, about 7cm, but if you kept a speed up it was nice and fun.
By the time we got back up the top the wind wasn't very nice at all.

20-30 cm of heavy snow overnight surprise meant lots of nice backcountry turns today, even some faceshots, especially in wind protected areas.
windy and snowy this morning, but by the time the sun came out the snow was getting super heavy, so we headed back.

cant help but think that this is the last fresh snow we'll see this season.

Supposedly another 5cm of snow overnight, but I dunno where it went. The crazy wind overnight probably blew it out to sea, then proceeded to strip most the mountain back to its bones.
These people doing weather reports should be shot.

Hiked up to the top of Australia Drift chair heading backcountry, but got a glimpse of the wide array of wind damage out there, and just turned around on the spot and headed home.

On the way home I noticed some secret protected patches and decided to give them a go. I needed to explore more anyway. It was good enough that I convinced ms pinnk jacket lady to call in sick, cancel her meetings, and join me for a quick lap. Surely her boss doesn't check Facebook :p (ps, he does)

Solo backcountry exploratory run at midday today. But despite the temperature, it hadn't softened enough yet. So it wasn't much fun.

Went back out for a late afternoon summit sun run for some vertical that counts on the Hotham App, to make sure we're still on the leaderboard.
They must have groomed it sometime last night or today. Not great grooming, but was nice to have some turns!

Ms pink jacket is experimenting with her stance on the board,
and I've been skiing so much backcountry I seem to have forgotten how to initiate a carve turn on piste!

Just summit and village today. But I'll take it!
Supposedly more lifts tomorrow.

I expected them to struggle to open mich. The town was so quiet it felt like there was nobody left to run them. I guess we're not going to the cool places enough to see all the staff parties ;)

ooh it was so nice and slushy today.
took an 8 yr old down hackers horror and wall of death, but it got pretty thin near the bottom. had to do some creative climbing over trees and stumps style of skiing.

Went out at 2pm until lifts closed, after watching joker v Alex bo3rev

Really ideal spring conditions. Snow was skiing very nicely

Fun and technically rewarding following a friend around - race coach and skiier. Can ski. Even sending it over the slush gully bumps was a hoot with no punters about

Good to see a few people made it up. Best time of year for skiing and Heavenly holds its snow pretty well to the end of the season.

Nice day for it ! Anyone know what's open for dinner in dp or Hotham still??
Most places are still open - although I'd recommend booking as they have a capacity limit of 10 people inside :( Most have also transitioned to providing take-away - which has been great from everywhere all season.

The only place I know that has shut up is Swindlers

Not sure where this "5cm" was today.
The marketing department rounded up a little I think.

It was 0.25cm outside our window at the back of our buidling (in central hotham), 1.5cm out the front of our building, and this morning there was spots with 2cm of snow, but it was completely unbonded to a rock solid ice layer underneath. you couldn't tell if you were hitting rocks or ice. eek.
It was nice to see any snow at all tho, so I'll take it.
I came back out this afternoon at 3, and it was nice and soft and slushy in the sunny parts. Even patrollers drop had some fresh left on it ... until 4 dudes side slipped it side by side.

I don't often close out a mountain. Its quite frustrating how early they close things. They were telling people last chair and ski patrol had roped things off 45mins before the lift is supposed to close. Is it always like that?
