numbers on hill are quite limited.
there are people staying here who have purchased accommodation and parking passes, yet can't purchase a lift ticket still.

after several days of overcast windy cold conditions, village chair opened suddenly on a warm deep deep blue sky day, sparkling fresh snow on the ground, zero wind and right in the middle of school holidays. every man woman kid cat squirrel and their dog decided to ride the 'new chair'. this is while people were catching summit and roadrunner chairs and traversing out of bounds to ski the HV terrain and ending on up village chair also (i was one of them). meanwhile it is the most direct route for ski patrol to get evacuees out, and had been stopped for long periods of loading and unloading for 3 stretchers that morning (im told). i also personally saw 3 ski school kids fall off the chair too, so even more stops, actually it was only 2 kids, 1 of them fell off twice in a row ;P
meanwhile the other lifts were relatively empty.

i haven't seen a queue longer than a few minutes since. the opening of HV has probably made an impact.

with 90cm behind me and 90cm in front of me, it is impossible for me to not social distance vertically in lift queues. and i just dont like people that much, so its not hard to maintain distance horizontally.
theres no limiting of numbers per chair however. but when travelling at 12kph im actually more concerned if the person on the chair in front is sick than i am of the people next to me.

everyone loves to bitch about lift queues like its some sort of coolness bandwagon, like theyve never been to a ski resort anywhere in the world before and its some sort of shock that it happens.
tho personally i like to perpetuate the lift queue posts to further discourage people from vising 'my' resort and stealing my snow.

the japanese love a good queue, mostly to catch the exclusivity of being the first there when something opens.
ive even had to queue up waiting for the barber to open in the morning.
I was actually shocked at how short the lift queues were at Hotham, given it was school holidays and only three lifts open. Genuinely shocked.

Side-country....Razorback gold. A few pics around the top of the GAR from late June.

A panorama of the last sunset before the first storms came through end of June/start of July:

yesterday I did 4 laps out on HV, hiking back to roadrunner each time.
the crazy bad conditions made for nice skiing.

I love those sorts of conditions where you're gear's all working, you're warm and comfy, you know where you are, where you're going and have an exit plan, but you're exposed af in crazy weather, the worse the weather the better.

but cant say no to such a pretty blue sky day.
20210705_094402.jpg

today got 2 laps in HV before that village chair queue went insane.
2nd run was down peach bowl
20210705_094350.jpg

the poor chair was stopping every 8 seconds with some kid falling off the bottom or the top.
reckon the queue was at least an hour long.

20210705_102112.jpg

so I said F that.
i had my skins on me, but not the rest of my avi gear. quickly grabbed it all, and went out.

20210705_114402.jpg

pit test showed avi danger to actually be moderately high.
but upon skiing it it was totally different and seemed really low.
weird.

Oops Re the post.

Any - it’s a small world. We spoke on that day of the crazy Village lift que - we were both walking up along Lawlers. Can even see my unimpressed face in the crowd shot you posted from the bottom of Village. Did Aussie Drift multiple times last week - was good.
Am reshuffling the decks to get back up this weekend as it could be the best for the season.

crazy how small the world is up here.
but need more people posting snow reports, i feel like im spamming the same thread ;P

not so sure yet if this weekend will be the best.

forecast for today was "snow". it snow'd alright, that wet soggy thick heavy stuff that isn't fun to ski or be outside in type of snow.

yesterday, while windy and with a closed summit and roadrunner, was ok snow. i think it was only because nobody was out in the bad conditions tho.
i was gettin around learning how to pilot a sit ski. same again tomorrow actually.

Pulled the pin at 10am today for the August Hotham boys trip. Lost 15% of accom fee. So be it. Feel for all of those trying to make a living from our love of the mountains. Get the Jab skiers. See you at Gotham next year. I hope.

another day hiking.

it has snowed a lot of reasonably dry, enough that many parts of the mountain are skiable now. tho the snow is suspended on top of the bushes so it collapses still as you ski over it.
but it was so windy whole time that its all broken crystal, wind effected, and compacted. you sink to your waist without skis, which probably makes for great instagram photos, but you only ride the top 3-4 cm most of the time.

freaking gazillions of people were out, well seems like it compared to us 50 locals from last year.
99% of which didn't look prepared at all. rental stiff skinny piste skis, beanie, goggles, and no idea. at this rate, by the end of this storm, i expect an incident or two.
I dug two pits today, with interesting top layers but reasonably stable packs in the end. but it was quite disconcerting when some yahoo drops in blind right next to you.
saw a group of people who thought boot packing the whole way up playground was a good idea. i think that'd take 4 hours maybe even dangerous with exhaustion n stuff.
plus also a group of about 50 staff (most likely staff) who bussed up from spiral stairs, with zero social distancing. they're probably all sleeping with each other so I guess they classify as a single family unit.

and for sure some people who had driven up from somewhere.
supposedly there were checks getting done up here and at the park entrances at both ends. guess they can't catch them all tho.

anyhoo. the day started just like any other ..... with a giant ....

bit of a lazy start, but still caught the blue sky this morning.
the snow had a tiny bit of a wind blown crust but still real nice to ski.
we dug two pits to examine the 40-45cm layer from this latest storm cycle.

on the way up the second run the clouds/fog came in something fierce. blue sky almost instantly turned to vertigo inducing blindness. the temperature jumped up, but so did the wind, and it started half raining half snowing. the unprepared could quite easily get caught out in that weather.
it turned the snow to heavy wet garbage that wouldn't have been very fun to ski even if you could see where you were going.

at the end of our second descent we heard the most unexpected thing ... a koala mating call!

this lap, we followed someone else's route up the hill through the trees. big mistake. we had to climb up over under trees all over the place to get through.
no idea what they were doing, or what they were trying to do.

i think this fog/rain layer/warm front has ruined the snow for the next 2 days.

No skidoo lifts.
The skidos are ski patrol and mountain ops taking down all the ropes n signs n stuff.
Ms pink jacket offered beers and boobs for a lift and still turned down!
we've been seeing a continued heavy activity with ski patrol and mountain ops removing all ropes signs from the resort. enough that it'll take them a week or more to put them all back!
suddenly getting quite concerned that they don't intend on opening up again

I'm going with the 'it would take them longer to dig them out and reset than just putting them back when required'. But yep - it makes me nervous. In other news, lift ops spent the day digging out lifts - so perhaps that is a good sign

you're not missing out on anything today.
its quite garbage out there. theres a thaw freeze layer with a few mm of windblown snow on top.
we were basically blind whiteout on anything as high as summit, lower down was just a thin layer of sometimes windblown mostly frozen base and more tree protected areas near sundowner had a bit more windblown, but again wasn't worth the effort.
we did only 1 quick run, mostly to maintain my position on the leaderboard

ms pink jacket decided to snowshoe today, I have no idea why. I think to bring out a different board and to reaffirm how it compares to skinning. It compares not good, I stood around waiting a lot

saw a heap of police cars about too. they didn't bother us tho.

"Mount Hotham police warn drivers after two cars without snow chains"

It's a nothing story..... two cars most likely slid into a bank and needed assistance getting back on the road, at the same time during the same weather event hundreds of cars over the state will have slid off wet roads with far greater consequence and no headlines.
The whole issue of our alpine roads and chains is a beat up, a storm in a tea cup. Those with commercial interest who keep promoting this 'issue' need to publish the data relating to serious injury and fatality stats from our alpine roads during the winter months. In my observation as a local, the risk is far greater during the green season.

A nice refresh of windblown pow overnight. Reported 7cm but cause of the wind it was actually quite a bit less in most areas.
Dry up high and a bit wet down low. But blown around enough to bury Dishy (Starlink) despite its built in heating.
Not so great visibility up top again today.

Stayed in resort for today. Did upper wendix, cornice+black snake, upper and lower wendix, peach bowl, cornice+d8/patrollers drop.
Saw maybe 10 other people hiking/riding.

Heading up a particularly steep pitch to be touring up on Canyon, steeper than one would normally go up instead of zig zag kick turns, one of my skins failed.
The tail strap pulled completely out of the clip, the skin came off, and sent me sliding backwards down the hill. Lucky I used my face to stop. Flexing so far I thought I hurt/pulled/twisted something in my calf, but now that I'm dry and warm it doesn't hurt anymore.
Its just friction fit in there, so I guess it's going to keep happening
20210720_153755.jpg
It was a good test of the skin glue tho. That skin got totally covered in snow. I just wiped it off, stuck it on, and it still pulled off like velcro at the top.

No pink jacket lady today, she's abandoned me for someone much friendlier and maybe just a little bit more attractive too.

at the end of our second descent we heard the most unexpected thing ... a koala mating call!

this lap, we followed someone else's route up the hill through the trees. big mistake. we had to climb up over under trees all over the place to get through.
no idea what they were doing, or what they were trying to do.

if we didn't know the way back so well one could have easily gotten lost.

i think this fog/rain layer/warm front has ruined the snow for the next 2 days.

have been told these reports help people keep track of what's going on up here, and can live vicariously through our household's adventure. im sure there's a sour pus or two tho.
is the heavy image format helpful?
Epic, lovely pics. How are the Shift's holding up?

they still take a bit of effort keeping snow out of them.
but knowing now where they will jam up, and new habits to protect them and keep them upside down away from snow and wind is making a difference.
rarely have problems with the toe going into ski mode now, and only once or twice a day have problems with the breaks going in tour mode.

Such great pix, my heart is aching........one year ago, in lockdown, I said to to my beautiful other 'this lockdown shit will go on for years, how bout we do a season with the kids on the hill, rent a place at DP now?'. Didn't happen (one kid is in year 11/12), and for some time it looked like a ridiculous brain fart......not anymore......

So..this weekends trip with 2 of my kids and 2 of their mates is canned. Maybe the one with the other kid and his mate next weekend..... here's hoping, but i reckon its cooked already. A few weeks with no lifts at hotham, with this kinda season shaping up is just....well.....enjoy

out again today.
the crazy wind last night meant that anything even remotely south facing was packed and ripply and ruined, so we were hunting for other stashes instead. i wanted to go out exploring terrain i haven't skied yet. but stupid irl got in the way and didn't have time for exploring today.
the sun came out occasionally also, making some aspects heavy and crusty.

no fresh snow, and anything that wasn't ski'ed out inbounds is pretty solid and wind effected.
its still cold tho, so snow holding up ok.
time to go into some convenient, but protected backcountry areas instead ... literally between my lodge and ms pink jacket lady's lodge.

i also went past the new avalanche training center today on the way hiking up higgi.
20210722_104021.jpg

i went up there to do one really challenging inbounds run to keep myself up top on the leaderboard. QC!

Question : does that fact that loads of snow had fallen, but no-one had skied it, mean that the high-volume areas in the resort will wear better over the remainder of the season ?

yes and no.

skiing it does cause snow to melt faster.
but compacting it really helps it last longer in spite of the people skiing it. like heaps heaps longer. some european resorts keep their snow over summer until winter the next year by compacting and covering with a tarp.

if we get even the slightest bit of rain or warm sunshine on the uncompacted stuff it'll melt super fast.

non compacted / non skied stuff is likely to become dangerous avalanche wise too. things that normally inbounds are safe, have had no base preparation (aka idiots skiing before its ready) and no compaction.
theres a famous one somewhere (jackson hole?) where the ski patrol boot pack a face for all of early season to prepare it for opening.

however you'll be happy to know that the resort are still compacting the snow with snow cats (leaving that annoying tread pattern behind them) and still snow farming in many spots to build as much as possible in preparation for reopening. actually big d is almost unskiable because of their snowfarming efforts there.
there are so many riders and skidoos going up and down sun run + gully catwalk + slalom gully that its compacted anyway. not to mention most people skin up this way out of the valley. its also getting all the ill prepared local staff boot packing it too.
same goes for davenport access trail. in fact they've been grooming it i think.

its only my 2nd year here, and last year wasn't very normal, so i dont really know where else might wear out from traffic.

I think you might be referring to the Highland Bowl at Aspen Highlands, where they boot pack it. Locals used to get a season pass if they did about 10 days stomping!

30cm overnight, but most of it blown around by the wind.
it was crazy howling all night.

great alpine road was closed today for poor conditions. they've finally gotten authorization to close it for bad conditions. supposedly turned away at least 80 people, most of which didn't have chains!
apparently it was blue sky and calm in dinner plain too.
not here. -7 and still windy as!

somehow every man and his dog was going to blue ribbon today. we talked to/heard of at least 25 people this morning all going there.
so we didnt.
(actually it took some convincing of my mates to not go there too. 'we should because everyone else is'. powder frothing turns peoples brains off sometimes)

top of heavenly valley and other ridge lines were ripping wind, scraped out conditions with poor visibility. but in protected areas it was deep and dry and cold pow with face shots if you forced the turn.

made the mistake of not adding a layer after a skin up when waiting for ms pink jacket lady, got myself a freezing cold. so not many photos. any gopro footage i have is all fogged up on the lens.
that and I turned it off instead of on once by accident. pocket footage anyone ;P
