Hotham Closing for 6 weeks.
Where did you read that? Nothing on there website.
Would not imagine it is news they would be rushing to advertise, just yet.
It's confirmed now, until at least 19 August.
I wasn't aware it was open. Snow must be pretty grim?
That is disappointing but understandable given the Victorian lock down.
Not sure how they would expect to re open if closing till the 19th Aug, who’s going to staff the mountain for only a few weeks at the end of the season?
I wonder how this will affect McSnow?
Any mail on Falls???
Both Hotham and Falls are closed. Epic Pass holders were all sent the one email with the subject line
"Falls Creek and Hotham to Suspend Lift Operations, Perisher to Remain Open"
Following in line with Mt Hotham. Both owned by Vail Resorts.
“Suspending” the season a get out or stalling on compensation for pass holders?
I just wrote the below in another post though I would copy paste rather than provide the link.
I would suggest everyone get on to that refund.
Vail or McSnow as I call them, make a large portion of their revenue from pre-season ticket sales. To keep the resorts open cost them a lot of money, closing means they can keep all of the pre-sold revenue which is not refunded. I would question the appetite to re-open with money in the bank and the chance to lose a considerable portion of that revenue having to staff and open the resort. They have a valid reason to close, so why not take it and run.
Off topic Sorry and you would know better or have more info, but I’d kinda expect Buller to follow Hotham/Falls and close for 6 weeks yes?
Nope everything I’m hearing from Buller is they will stay open. And that’s consistent with their message from months ago, they will run while they are legally allowed to and just scale operations so they don’t make too much of a loss.
Further reinforces a view that I made many years ago that the best owners of a ski resort are benevolent zillionaires.
Carveman, your opinion on.... the likelihood of a Buller season pass credit / refund / combo of both ...I've paid up $2,500 for 4 family passes and yet to ski a day
How they will manage the angry season pass Metro folk then?
Maybe announced today or they will make you wait til september.. great customer service there
Yeah you must be so mad that your season pass hasn’t been refunded.
Doesn't change the facts
I like skinning Hotham in-bounds
New DPS skis arrived this afternoon, as did the msg from FC/Hotham. Shakespearian!
Inbounds backcountry will be great...have to try to find a positive out of this plagued season.
Apparently resort entry won't be required from Monday, so parking is on. Should be good to go after forthcoming snowfall.
Locals with BC XC ski kit and skins must be thanking the plague for this windfall!!
Not according to their website. . Certainly a great opportunity for some easy access storm touring (if a decent storm ever arrives!). They’ll be clearing car parks etc (see website), though I’d expect a fair few tracks in there.
I’ve had some of my best turns when the resort is closed, so I’m looking forward to it.
But you also live in the leper colony. Even the 4 WD back roads from Melb. to Hotham would have road blocks on them .
So I take it we are allowed to BC ski at Hotham then? Lifts aren't running which seems to be mostly a business decision, but they're not stopping people who are allowed to from entering the resort to do so as they wish?
Appears so. FC RMB has posted encouraging people to come.
Looks like Hotham website is also saying the same stuff...maybe I should have bought the Camox Freebirds instead
Correct, you should’ve...
Try ordering in skins. I have been waiting for a second set from EMC . It won't happen soon. The world supply chain is stuffed.
Good article, I reckon that's how everyone is feeling and we are pretty upset with Vail, but I'm sure they don't care. Think we'll have to try some ski/hike options, I've got a backpack for skis, and walk mode on my boots, that'll be fine right?
EMC finally got my Salomon bindings in mid this week, they had been waiting on them for literally WEEKS but they did get them eventually.
Off topic, but great shop and people there at EMC!
Easy enough to blame Vail, but many of the senior management and ski patrol of Hotham had input into the decision, which was a bit of a no brainer if you stop to think about it for a minute. No snow, a pandemic spiralling out of control, and no customers.
There will hopefully be some awesome options for BC in 6 weeks. I’m already planning and looking forward to it.
Err, you mean, “...no city customers.” There are loads of Victorians who have the good sense/fortune to not be urbanites. Vail can shove it up firmly - they removed the Locals Pass option (their usual MO with newly purchased resorts), now they shut out non-urban folks altogether.
I'm pissed of about the loss of locals passes, but the closure of the lifts is hardly the same. Do you really think it would have been financially viable to keep the lifts running, especially with such poor cover?
We might be bitterly disappointed but I don't think you can blame a business for making a decision to avoid large losses.
(and I say this as a leftie who was expecting to do lots of pretty safe day trips to Falls)
I have observed people not giving a shite about the level 3 Urban lockdown over the past 48 hours. We will be heading into Level 4 soon. I can feel it. That will wipe out any Sept. BC ski trips for us Leper colony denizens because going back to Level 3 is not the same as being allowed out to BC XC/AT ski .
UPDATE.: Good news from the Hotham Resort Management Board.. The MHARMB is committed to providing as good an experience as possible in these difficult times. This includes activities the MHARMB can control. XC skiing, Snowshoeing, Tobogganing, and Snow play. For those guests from areas not in lockdown, the above activities are still on offer and are a great way to enjoy our beautiful winter environment. All we are waiting on now, is the forecasted SNOW. Then grooming will commence and the fun can start. Village to Whisky Flat was groomed last W/E. Village to skiers xing still skiable. Wire Plain has thin and bare patches. Take care.. Get busy with those snow dances., watch this space. Bev.

Davenport Village to Whisky Flat is groomed for chook footing.
Reading between the lines it shows that the FC / Hotham decision was purely financial and not health-related if both RMBs are actively encouraging visitors.
What one would expect from Vail.
