Damm, I suppose that means no free parking for those early backcountry missions. I love skiing up there those first few days after the resort is closed.

But what about some decent lift & mtn entry discounts to entice punters - esp. As they consider where to take the sprogs during two weeks of ski holiday?

I note Hotham's blanket one day discount is only from Monday 2nd, so 5 days in Sept. will still set one back over $500 clams!

Having now spent thousands from my (potential) mortgage saver account - tickets at half or even 2/3 price would help sway me. Parking at half rate would sure help. Resort has to realise by Sept. Most folks have spent most of their ski budget. Check user survey results! So anything to seas the burden will help.

Oz resorts resorts should check OS to gauge discounts required. Pretty sure they do - there's real competition for the snow $.

Hell, for a good deal, some might even pass up on the chance to see their footy team in action??

Or miss their kids sporting finals??? Mm? Maybe??

What you say makes a lot of sense. If there was a discount for the grand final weekend we would seriously consider heading up.

    Just try it.
It hasn't been so s/hot for the last four weeks.
With regard to late night arrival.......
I would suggest talking to a Bus Driver, telling them where Your parking and that You want to be picked up.

Props to Hotham for the new buses, which have lower floors and are much easier for small kids to get in.

Brickbats though for the lack of ski racks and the loading at Village - try and put your skis on the rack and your a danger of not making it onto the bus, even if you are at the front of the queue... meanwhile the balance between the people loaded on the front and rear of the bus is not right - seems like there are too many seats behind the rear door to fill them up properly.

Thumbs up to the 2018 snow making, grooming and snow farming efforts that turned 70cm into an unexpectedly good school holiday experience.
Thumbs down to the hijacking of the main day car park by the marketing department - seriously folks, giving half the space to a property development showroom and owners of one luxury car brand screams “we don’t give a flying f%^k about day trippers or Dinner Plain guests”.

    ...on this subject...

Thumbs up to the guerrilla campaign to make sure Village chair is correctly labelled on the trail maps on said chair, with overwriting of the name of said luxury car brand in marker pen!

(apologies Gregah for hacking your quote, but it sums up the problem...)

I get abuse when I park in the four ringer spots. They bang on about "prestige" and other lentil eateresque put downs.
I just point to half the cars of that brand, in the sponsor's car park, which are over a decade or two old.
There's a 2001 Allroad on Carsales for $4k. Not expensive.

Before half of the Corral Car Park was "hijacked", on the weekend, you needed to get there early to get a park.
Now, you have to get there earlier. I know this when I haven't put in my form for a four ringer spot.
The Corral Car Park is not long for this world. Think of this as transition.

I'm often a guest of Victoria River camping ground and the Corral is handy so I can use the car as a convenient locker.
If I'm too late, I go on up the road to the Loch car park. That's handy too.

Call me a snob but I have very much enjoyed parking my well used Audi in allocated spot for 5 days recently.
One of the few privileges I have received at Hotham for having a car seasons pass.
However it is very frustrating to have the unopened display unit and desolate village square taking up very valuable day car spots.
Skiing has been fantastic so far and surprisingly the crowd numbers haven't been so big.
    Everyone going to Buller?

Personally I think it's a bit crass given the limited number of day parks but this is their offering:

    https://www.mthotham.com.au/discover/explore/getting-here/audi-vip-parking
    Reserved Car Parks
To celebrate our partnership with Audi, Hotham Alpine Resort are offering Audi drivers who visit the resort exclusive VIP parking in the Corral Day Car Park. Park your Audi in a prime position opposite Hotham Central, the home of the Audi Quattro chair and access to all of the snow fields.

There is a limit of 10 car spaces available each day, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.

If you are an Audi driver, please email the application form below prior to arrival to the Mt Hotham Resort Management Office to reserve your premium car park. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Definitely bullshit Hotham . Empty parking at Hotham central , no supervision for parking at Loch carpark?
Clueless drivers parked all over the place at Loch yesterday.
Could have fitted another 10-15 cars in if they were parked properly .
Just sent an email to management.

Skied past some guys camping down from DP this morning at sunrise. Very nice spot amongst the snow gums. But they were obviously unaware that beer cans don’t burn in campfires.

Reckon the quality of bistro menu options at Zirkys has gone down a notch this year. On a plus they have Stone and Wood on tap which offsets all else.

It has been sh#t now for years. The vanilla slices from the cafe part (and available in the bistro) on the other hand are pretty good however! Miss Mary's underneath Hotham Central isnt to bad.

I can't speak for Hotham road management, but my experience is that chains are being unnecessarily forced or advised to be fitted more and more at Falls. The amount of driving on clear black roads with chains fitted that people are being forced to do is crazy. They've gotta realise it's primarily poor driving causing sliding off roads, not due to the need for chains or different tyres. Saturday morning case in point, I drove up early in snowy road conditions without a single slip of my tyres, 4wd coming down with chains fitted had slid into the bank. Clearly too fast, not paying attention or poor use of stop/go pedals.... not a problem solved by fitting chains.

    Its nuts.
    And gets worse every year.
The Europeans would find it hilarious - and part of the reason my car won't support chains is that they're hardly used any more in the Northern Hemisphere. Modern cars with good tyres are just fine in snow when driven with consideration.
I envisage a future so risk averse that chains will be mandatorily fitted in Bright, and the speed limit restricted to 15km/h for the entire hill - and that's just in summer.
Coming down the hill on Sunday was stuck in a cavalcade that crawled at an average speed of 33km/h (I was so Fg bored that I put a trip recorder on - whilst watching the footy).
FFS folks, its just a road. Most of it wasn't even wet.
Should have seen it in the 70s when it was unsealed and the risk was left up to the user. Very frustrating.

How funny is this ‘traction detection vehicle’ that is getting around. Come on Australia, sort it out.......

As for why it takes 4 people employed by the RMB to park your car in the overnight car park on a Friday night. For that many people they could do valet serive.

    Not even the 70s.

Just need a decent snowfall before the season!

I’ve driven in conditions in May that would see them have kittens and close the road for days if it was June through September.

Another beef, and I definitely don't want to appear to be racist.
But you have a company that buys up half of Dinner Plain - and then encourages a massive minority ethnic group of non-skiers, non-snowboarders, non-anything-to-to-do-with-snow, to drive up an occasionally perilous road when they've previously had nothing at all to do with driving in snow their entire lives...
    WTF were they thinking?

And so, as increasingly usual, Australia's answer to a contrived problem is to create more rules.
There are now 8 new 40km/h zones, and they are policed - because, hey, we've worked out that our newest growth industry (after middle useless management) is in (robotically) fining people who (mostly unwittingly) break these mostly ridiculous rules.
My French in-laws copped nearly 1000$ in fines last year in the September school holidays bc of their lack of understanding of the fine-print for our car without the season pass. And good luck contesting those.
They righteously thought that it's a stupid ****ing rort. If the same happened in a French ski station which was fighting for custom, then as well as losing business there'd be another freaking revolution.
And so why everyone defaults to driving 33km/h the whole way down the hill.
But we don't want to actually pay some dude to make the Loch carpark work. That's still random - and good luck parking on a sloping poorly cleared ice field.

Loch carpark wont work well when clueless drivers park all over the place and want lots of room to get out and get dressed rather than consider trying to fit as many cars in as possible.
It is pretty shit to pay $50 and have to park down the road miles from the lifts.
I am quite sure the RMB can afford a person for 2 hrs in the morning to supervise it.

What's the best day car park at Hotham for a weekend? I've only been up twice and both times were mid week so we parked opposite the Audi lift with not many cars around.

Loch carpark imo. I got there about 930 saturday before last and it was about 70% full, so i expect full by 10ish?

Nothing like getting into your gear at -6 and a 50 knot breeze in a dirt carpark with a thin layer of ice

Wish the bus still ran to loch, but i think the dam ended that

If it was my choice I’d park further down near Jack Frost for day car parking. More shelter if it’s windy. Can take mcColls or Davenport down to the “audi” chair. First thing in the morning I find it a nice head clearing ski down to the lift. It’s generally quiet and you could be anywhere.

Agree about mcolls, frosty drop and dav access if all open. When we stay on mountain its in Davenport and nothing makes me happier than a start like that....the parents of young kids woohooing as they take of down mccolls after the bigd dropoff
