Hey guys just wondering what you guys think Hotham will be like Queens Birthday. I have never done an opening weekend but with the current weather im starting to consider it. Will many lifts be open?? If its just gonna be Big D and Audi then im not interested. I dont have enough experiance with backcountry either to give it a crack by myself.

    Thanks!

Don’t know any Hotham Queens .

First part of next week is much like this week, and then from Thursday it warms up.

So between 45 and 75 cm at best - however- snowmaking...

There will be some snow, and thus some lifts open - maybe more than just one or two this time around,, and thus some skiing, but its early season, so don’t expect too much...

Opening weekend pretty relaxed - all about the vibe, more than the skiing...

It will be better (and busier) later.

Good to get up there though... early season’s fun as long as you don’t expect too much.

Can only speculate... if significant snowfall occurs/cold temps next week you might get Heavenly open...
Look at the cams, zoom right in and look for evidence of grooming and covers off the snowguns:

DP is always fun, note they've got fireworks up the road this year too.
HV has been groomed, and with more snow on the way I'd be surprised if it wasnt open - but definitely Village, roadrunner and summit.

I've gone for the hail Mary and booked accomodation in Omeo for Thursday night hoping Friday they open

It looks like they have a bit and if there is enough they could open more but we shall see

I can cancel accommodation till Tuesday

    Not to be cynical but....
They won’t have staffing and all the behind the scene stuff like staff accom, staff to do grooming, man the lifts, ski patrol ratios etc.. for more than a few lifts to be open. Even if there is +1m base.
I’d be banking on Big D, Summit poma, and Summit (this gives them the 3 to meet the ski guarantee) then add in Roadrunner.
Village or “Audi” chair if you’re lucky.

Opening weekend is usually as people have said more about “the vibe”. This is code to have low expectations about businesses having their stuff organised, open and working and to not try and get stressed about it all. Don’t factor in all the shops/restaurants being open either...

This is based on being there for opening weekend for the past 6 years... Don’t want to be a killjoy, just want you to have a realistic expectation.

The backcountry at Hotham is great but don’t do it by yourself ;)

QBW is for getting ready for the season. Any snow or skiing is a bonus and not to be taken at all seriously

Perisher have just announced all 4 areas open next weekend, I wonder what the new owners will do for this weekend. Surely if we get 20+ tommorrow, Heavenly Valley is a certainty.

    Super competitive
I’ve worked opening weekends pub days and also been at Hotham pre opening weekend on work experience

I definitely haven’t got hopes up but if the snow is about and the other Aussie resorts are opening more terrain and Hotham don’t it’s a missed opportunity

I’m happy to cruise about but I’m not a fan of huge crowds and based on Buller cams this weekend if they don’t have a bit more terrain it’ll be like this

Got till Tuesday to make final call

Well, you've (kind of?) got your wish - Hotham have announced a Friday open, but it's just the Audi chair. If you don't have a season pass, then will also sell you a 4-day pass for $258 for the long weekend only.

It’s better than nothing and going for 1 day to fight crowds

Take what we can get, have something Sunday so can’t do whole weekend

Hotham did a day pass for $56 due I gather to limited terrain

It is what it is, snows good quality early but for sure limits, you never know how the weather can turn e.g next week so you take what you can get and make the most of it
