Was a bit vague, what are the hardest runs on Hotham and what are the hardest runs on Buller?
    How do they compare?

What's "hard"? Steep, deep or moguls?

Generally those who ask this type of question have no where near the skill to ski/board them at any resort anyway.

    Too vague, too many variables
Overall, Hotham has a larger variety of difficult runs, but at the tippy top buller has the hardest runs

    IMO

In reality the number of days Buller is in peak condition is limited, but when its fully ON there are a number of nice challenging black runs.
On the other hand , Hotham has many black runs that are open most of the season that are in bounds as well the challenging double black extreme area and the many side country powder steeps.
Being a Hotham person I much prefer our terrain and would rather keep it to ourselves.
I am sure the Buller mob think the same as well so maybe best to do both.
Otherwise just go to Falls and enjoy their lovely mainly intermediate terrain and venture out to Mt McKay for your black run fix.

    Ok,
    1) I am getting a second opinion for a friend
    2) I am aware of the challenging slopes at Hotham, but not Buller
    3) I would like to compare some of the harder Hotham runs to the Buller ones
    4) I appreciate your concern :)

Peak winter, 1.5m base off-piste both resorts, 30cm plus fresh dryish snow, mid week I'm choosing Buller for off-piste trees, steeps in bad weather etc.
But realistically these conditions are far more rare at Buller than Hotham.
Thus, I go to Hotham far more than Buller.
    The OP is highly subjective.
    What are your preferred conditions?
Personally I pretty much only go inbounds on fresh days but never on a weekend at Buller.
The worse the weather the better as far as I'm concerned. Horizontal blizzards ftw.
I lean towards Hotham for reliability when it comes to fresh snow.
At Buller you really can get skunked on that front. Rain v snow.
As for named runs...I couldn't even tell you 1/8th of them. I just go where it's steep leeward of whatever wind has blown the snow in.

Like you said Hotham has a greater chance of ideal conditions. What in-bounds Hotham runs do you ski/board?

Skied heaps at Buller last year, was awesome on the south-sy-eed - some fricking awesome terrain out there - apart from the time on outer edge when I missed the Wombat return  - but as already stated it's not that often. Was amazed on the weekend at Hotham that amount of black that 50-60 cents gives - upper Blue Ribbon, Notice Board, Lower Playground all of HV, got a few good runs down Lindy's and Gotcha too.

It's pretty cool to have all your best runs funnel you down into the 1 lift that also services probably the best intermediate terrain on the entire hill...

Poor old OP. All he asked for was a list of Buller's hardest runs in peak conditions and this is what he gets in return!

It's pretty cool that the first 2 hours of the day you get 30cm snow with barely a lift queue whilst Bullers just gone through a rain snow mizzle rain dust snow freeze event.
(Terrain inbounds Buller definitely the best when top to bottom fresh no doubt)
    But yeah.

Hotham has better In bounds terrain even if Buller had snow. In regards to out of bounds not many people explore or ski out of bounds because the in bounds terrain has so much to offer!

Nah, Buller is at least an equal in equal conditions. Lots of semi- hidden spots for advanced.
But really, they are pretty different.
Hotham for bowls and ridges, Buller less so with the exception of the very top with a short hike. That's as extreme as it gets inbounds in Oz. But for high advanced only.

Personally I'll usually take the Hotham option for reliability and side/backcountry for a weekend or 2 each season with a midweek Buller trip if conditions are epic.
Regarding the op though, I dunno!

Hang on, you said earlier that you are not aware of the challenging slopes at Buller, so how/why would you say that Hotham has better in bounds terrain?

Hotham felt a bit like Buller on Saturday with school holiday crowds and limited open lifts leading to lengthy lift queues.

I have been looking at the in bounds at Buller and can definitely say Hotham terrain is more difficult.

Let's try and answer the original posters question.

    Very steep runs
    - Buller has Fannys Finish, Fast One and McLaughlins Shoulder. They are among the best steeps around, but there's not much else in bounds.
    - Hotham. Where do I begin? There's Marys Slide and lots of nearby runs, plus the occasional short and steep diversion off Blue runs such as Pumphouse Drop. I doubt many people would dispute Hotham has the best range of steeps.

    Moguls.
Hotham has a few good mogully areas like the runs off Blue Ribbon chairlift, but Buller wins this one with lots of good moguls off Bull Run, Federation and occasionally Chamois chairlifts.

    Combined steeps and bumps.
Both resorts do this fairly well, but in average snow conditions my instinct is to go for Hotham. But when the snow is good everywhere, Buller is probably the best ski hill in Australia, but sadly Buller snow isn't always up to scratch.

But most of the long steep slopes at Buller and Hotham require you to take two lifts and traverse quite a bit, you have to go to Tassie to get nice steep slopes that have a lift running right next to them like this.

Buller has more km of black runs, while Hotham may have more challenging black runs it definitely has better off-piste for the extremely advanced with the Razorback and Feathertop.
