Just realised I have planned a long weekend (5-8 sept) to Buller when national interschools is on. There is reference to 1500 competitors across 9 disciplines (I expect they will travel with family so lots more around) will this lead to lots of run closures, lift lines etc. it’s not a peak week but never been to Buller so don’t know how it handles big events like this and how much of the hill they rope off.

I’m Flying in from WA to give the 5 year old 3 days of aus skiing between nth hemisphere trips to keep her skills up - she’ll probably be in ski school half of the time so will get a bit of lift line priority (she’s intermediate with no fear). I’m less keen to do a 4 hour flight and then drive 4.5 hours to Hotham or Falls for 3 days of skiing but will do this if Buller is likely to be a cluster? Any regulars got any thoughts on how busy it gets around interschools?

You barely notice it. Vic interschools a different story.

But will there be snow? I’ve been to 2 nationals at Buller. Once there was no skiable snow (there’s my photo floating around somewhere) and the other time half was closed, the rest skiable for a couple of hours before turning to sticky slush. A long way to travel for potentially very expensive and very little reward. Why?

I’d be leaving it until much closer before making plans. Our 2 days at Nationals cost $1000 for 2, with accomodation, discounted lift passes, entry, parking etc.

That's 1500 people lining up to race on 3 or 4 courses, and uncounted hundreds hanging around the course to watch their future Olympian darling.

Thanks all, will stick with Buller plans.

Chickski that photo looks grim - have done fine in early sept last 2 years at Thredbo willing to roll the dice as flights are using points and need
to keep the kid keen for the main game which is another trip to France in January - at worst, this trip turns into a dad and daughter road trip and we do other stuff.

would this be the worst possible photo you could find, by any chance?
most interschools parents are not like that

It’s my photo and a very good representation of conditions at the time.

    sure
I've been to Buller when they were trucking snow around, in August
but that's not the general case
it might be useful to see what the average snow depth figures are for that time of year
