I realise the Japanese are driven by rules and a need to be team players, but hypothetically speaking how could we improve the place, as near perfect as it is now??

I'd like Vail or the Compagnie des Alpes to buy one of the larger resorts.

    Ok examples
No.1 few Ryokans, pensions etc. have hand rails for stairs, even though transport hubs are adequate. Ski boots and stairs aren't a good combination at the best of times.
No.2 napkins/wipers are almost devoid at on hill eateries.
No.3 pillows are either rock hard or plastic straw/bead filling and way too soft.

These are relatively minor points, but if you were living there how could it be improved??

I like it as it is, idiosyncrasies and all. If it didn't have the annoying idiosyncrasies, it wouldn't be Japan anymore!!

Probably the only thing that repeatedly annoys me are bus timetables in Hakuba, and the poor connections between Goryu and Happo. They should run the buses near continuously a la pretty much any other ski resort in the world. Also Goryu and Happo should learn to cooperate more - they'd increase overall visitation. Finally two lifts between Happo One and 47 to link them.

Needs to be more bogan friendly

    Embrace face and neck Tatts

    Fighting on the streets

    Promote acts of vulgarity

And get rid of the pooftah food, more maccas and dirty bird

The only thing I miss in Japan is good espresso, it's hard to find!

I agree on the pillows, but why would you want to improve another country? Isn't the reason we travel overseas is because you get to experience another culture?
There are things that certain resorts could improve like better setting out of lifts or other infrastructure like building a gondola between Myoko resorts ( as suggested by @M_G in another thread).
Some resorts need to also be a bit more relaxed on things like tree skiing in inbound areas.

Being uptight about tree skiing is part of the culture, embrace and enjoy these restrictions

Now that the multi mountain passes are up and running, fingers crossed things might improve on that front. The lift idea has been thrown around for years.

Apart from wishing it was closer to Australia the only other thing I'd change is the smoking in some restaurants.

I wouldn't want to change much. It's idiosyncrasies are part of the appeal. Embrace the differences. Don't want to make it too easy for foreigners.

I don't have a problem with the pillows. Sure 1 Yen coins are surplus, usually just dump those. The smoking thing is gradually changing.

I'd like a bit more luggage space on the new Shinkansens.

Based on my various trips to Japan, I think the question should read more like "How to improve Australia?"

Oh yes! This is an important one I reckon.
They do recycling really, really well. But I can't help wondering if it wouldn't be that ilttle bit easier if they weren't so nuts on the packaging to begin with.

When the GST was 5%, it was added BEFORE the the marked price, so you didn't end up with a million 1 yen coins. When the GST was changed to 8% the govt said retailers could add either before or after.... So you never know if it's added or not, so you end up with lots of 1yen coins. All that needs to happen is to change the rule, so it's added before.

Short black not so short in Tokyo.

I think I would like to assist helping the Japanese make better coffee as a job. Saying that, I like the vending machine coffee, something you have to keep your hands warm out in the middle of the wilderness, standing next to a vending machine.

THere's an Illy cafe near Harajuku. Is this where this is taken?
    The coffee's OK.
I find any place that has an espresso machine will do an OK espresso. Really, if you're just pushing buttons, it's not that hard to stuff it up. So I usually order one of those, then make my own macchiato by adding some of the vile creamer and a sugar.
I remember the first time I asked for a macchiato I was greeted by blank expressions.

I've not seen any Asian country with an electrical distribution network resembling order.

Ironically, considering their zappy whizz-bangedery, Japan is no exception.

How to improve Japan? How about saving the country by solving its looming population collapse. They are heading for disaster.

I can just see it. Set up a cool little coffee cart. Plant it anywhere in Hokkaido except for Niseko and I'm pretty sure the locals will walk right past you and get a hot beverage out of the vending machine :)

    Vending machine coffee = :puke:

It looks like they do recycling really well, but in reality the amount of rubbish they incinerate is incredible. That's not recycling. And they are pretty poor at getting rid of things like bikes, cars, TVs/whitegoods etc. Just because you have a lot of little bins and you keep all your bottle caps doesnt mean you are actually doing anything to reduce your waste.

They are slowly, very very slowly, embracing some immigration. When my brother married his wife in Japan (she's not Japanese) the Japanese government threw everything at them to try and get them to stay so they would have kids etc.

    They left.

A lot of the little things you see when you visit pale into insignificance when you actually live there. Outside the big cities the place hasnt really moved forward much, save for a few little things that are unavoidable.

Having to go to the 7/11 to pay your bills (gas, electricity, phone) is a right pain in the ass. Paying with cash for those things is also a pain in the ass, especially when you can touch your phone on a vending machine and buy a drink. 24 hour ATMs would be good too.

Road and road safety design in smaller country towns. Seriously, move your telephone post 1m to the side so it's not on the road. Also, for Americans and other countries (AUS is OK) getting your license in Japan is a right pain in the ass and a moneymaking scam.

Finally, people who have lived in Japan will tell you that no matter how long you live in Japan, you will always be considered a foreigner. Hopefully with increase immigration (which they must embrace, whether they like it or not) this will change, but it will be slow, that's for sure.

re: paying bills: I'm generally stopping at a 7-11 at some point so it's not too bad.

My water bill has to be paid at either the city office or a specific bank branch which is a right PITA.

Yeah, but without the music unfortunately @Born2ski ;)

Cheese (still a long way to go)
    Coffee (admittedly getting better now)
    Decent bread
As @ojisan said, building that bloody gondola. And put every area/lift on the same scannable ticket.

That's all. Anything else is probably cultural imperialism. ;)
