Let's say you can get permission to leave the country then you are granted a visa to enter Japan, what are the chances of getting back into Australia ?
More flights planned to get Australians home for Christmas http://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11-...stralians-home-christmas-coronavirus/12923656
Well ... That’s the kicker isn’t it?! That ABC article above is talking about special flights put on to bring people home. It’s not an uptick in regular flights. I’d be very very careful leaving and trying to get back in pre-vaccine commencing. If you’ve got the visa, permission to leave and you don’t plan on coming back until April/May - I’d say it’s worth a risk. If you were planning on a 4 week January ski trip. I’d say You’re Dreaming!!
0% chance I leave Australia unless my literal life depends on it. Skiing/japan aint worth that much to me. Plenty of time in the future to do it and I would rather not put my health at risk. Would also rather take my money and support Australian buisnesses who need it desperately
ABC News tonight said 36,400 Australians overseas are still registered with DFAT as “desperate” to get home to Aus. I think they may get priority over any travellers, assuming anyone is allowed to leave for such a casual reason anyway
My boss recentlyu fley back to England for a holiday to visit his family and is back in Perth, did 2 weeks quarantine in a hotel is is now back at work. Clearly things are possible
Book a Business/First class ticket and you'll likely get home on the flight you book. Go economy and it's a lucky dip when you'll get back into Australia.
You will get back but you will have to be flexible on timing/cost and perhaps quarantine. My neice just came back from USA where she is based and now in quarantine. Not sure of all the details.
You're a citizen so the Australian government cannot stop you from returning. A friends Japanese mother-in-law got on a flight at short notice last month, did 2 weeks in Sydney quarantine before heading to his place. Flights in economy were about $1000 one way. 4 of them are heading back to Japan before xmas and quarantining in their own place in Nozawa. I am told that if you are picked up in a private vehicle from the airport and returned directly to your home you can quarantine there. Send me a plane ticket and I will organise someone to pick us up.
If your time was flexible and happy to go with the flow then I reckon it can be done. If you really need to be back in Oz then I wouldn't do it. Things were looking good but now the next wave is hitting us. Vaccine talk is positive. Who knows what is going to happen. Although the internet does need another complainer so I say go and then have a whinge when things don't work out.
I'm Day 15 quarantine in Sydney. Pretty much over it. The logic of being an Aussie citizen and being allowed to return when you like isn't how it pans out in reality due to the government quotas that have been put on incoming pax. I booked a Jakarta-Sydney ticket for 3 November. Took a flight from my place in Sumatra to Jakarta, get off the plane, turn on my phone and there's an email from Garuda saying my booking has been pushed back a week doooh! I hung at the check in desk till 2200 to try and get on. No luck. Go find a hotel downtown, a meal and a few beers, then back to Sumatra the next day. Depart successfully on 10 November. All up, the exercise cost a *lot* more than it normally would. Not to mention $3k bill for quarantine. And from what I've heard the process of departing Aus requires dealing with a fair bit of admin as well. International travel is doable, it just a major PIA and a lot of $$. Not worth it for a few weeks in Japow methinks...
Ooops just read your post after posting mine. Apologies for the whinge! Quarantine is actually fun. Thank god for Dan Murphys!!
I was under the impression you were not allowed alcohol. 3rd hand report from someone returned from Canada had a different view. Super bored and over being in quarantine. They were bumped 7 times and then told February or March next year. They made their original booking in November 2019 when they left Aus. Tried a different airline and got home.
They quarantined you in a Church? With beer? What is this mix of heaven and hell Great post TeePee. It is helpful to get first hand accounts.
#1 son reports from the UK "Direct flights (one stop) are difficult and expensive, multi stops a lot easier" If I had a nice place in Japan to bug out for an extended winter I would be chancing it. No way I would be going to the States or Euro
Out of interest I tried several combos of return business/first flights Dec/Jan via ANA, JAL, QF, Expedia and Flight Centre. Not one of them returned any availability.
There are some one way seats available on ANA from sydney to tokyo . If you don't mind staying for the winter
Skyscanner is a good one to try. First search of random dates came up with this below in business class. Not surprised there is availability at $8,000 +
Yep, you can order booze and food which is good because the food they drop at your door is not that special. As an aside, when I was 'reasoning' with the Garuda people at the check in desk in Jakarta, I asked how do they decide who gets kicked and who boards? Frequent flyers get proirity as do business class bookings (obviously). So it gets back to it all being doable as long as you have the patience and the $$$ Just recounted my days. Day 18 since landing. Stockholm syndrome setting in
I looked directly on the JAL websight. More than 3 months stay lots of options for a return for less than $1k from Sydney with at least one free date change. Compared with $5k would be worth while even if you abandoned the return. Who knows what options you can get if you contact them. Did not know about ANA till i went to the embassy.
Thanks for sharing. We hear cnflicting stories about quarantine. Good to hear 1st hand. If I can get to Japan, depending on when I have to come back, it may be something I have to look at. I have a staff member from last season who is still in Japan and is coming to work for me again. She will have to work out what she is doing when her working holiday visa nears expiry
You don't know how tempting that is, was one of my "summer plans" discussed with TBC. Maybe next winter as I am fairly sure I am about to be employed in a dream job locally.
#2 son did 14 days in quarantine in Sydney with a view of a dank courtyard. His friends sent in fresh vegan food supplies and his guitar and he bought a swag of books with him. Said it "wasn't too bad" but the good was crap. TV was ordinary and anything other than FTA was chargable.
So many improvements could and should have been made to quarantine in addition to the obvious security ones. If people had to quarantine in a decent environment with a host of options on the tv, decent and diverse food options (even if that’s only access to Uber eats delivery), and alcohol.. now I wouldn’t even notice 2 weeks without any alcohol (which is the regulation here in WA apparently) but there would be some people for whom it would be a massive issue. The middle of pandemic quarantine isn’t the time to be tackling their alcohol dependence. I’m expecting some sort of quarantine arrangements once travel starts again post vaccine. Not everyone CAN quarantine at home, so either any luck the Q experience will be improved somewhat and also be a bit more uniform across the country.
Well we haven’t been able to do that for anything else, so why expect this for quarantine? Each State is so Special & Unique.
Considering our origins it is what you would expect. This has definitely shown there are some issues but .... it could be worse, we could have city jurisdictions for police.
Too true. It revealed ugliness, but TBH I’d rather be here than in many other places in the world right now.
And sales tax. Apparently there are about 5,000 separate sales taxes in the US, down to city and county level.
There’s always room for improvement though right...? As long as it’s a discussion that does come back to appreciation of what we have, with debate regarding future improvement rather than just abject complaint and moaning.
And exercise. Super important. They could run an online session for inmates and mate-esses a couple of times/day. Healthy body, healthy mind and all that.
Can't - daughter starts Year 12 on Jan 27. Thanks. Was actually able to get some results there. For three of us it varied from $8000 (economy) up to $19000 (first). Many flights via Sri Lanka. In a normal year I wouldn't mind that adventure but not this time around.
You could always send 1 of you on ANA on the 28th and return on the 24th of Jan, Costs about 148,000yen
