So my last day skiing was January 25, 2017. About to hit my third anniversary. It was the last day of a family trip to Tahoe, we skied that day at Heavenly. We knew that doing a big family trip to the US would cost us that Aussie winter and the following northern winter, but a change of career and money have conspired to keep us away from the slopes longer than had been anticipated.

So I thought I would create this thread, surely there are others who still religiously check into a ski forum, but haven't skied in a long while, this is a support page for those people. Post your last ski day here, some details (as above) and then return to celebrate breaking your drought with people who feel your pain and relief. Watching people who always get to ski celebrating their ability to ski, can get a little depressing, but I want to hear when people who deserve it as much or more than I get to reignite their ski flame.

    RULES:

    1. A drought in ski terms is 15 months or more (12 months could just be the gap between your yearly trip, that's just SDS, there are threads for that everywhere).

    2. Quote your first post when you break your drought, so we can all enjoy your triumphant return.

    3. When someone breaks their drought they should be showered with likes, that's the kind of thing that should make every forum member feel warm inside.

    4. Please go skiing, so I can live vicariously through you, as 2020 looks ski-less at this stage.

Am going skiing this Sunday for the first time since I did my ACL almost exactly 2 years ago. Fingers crossed for no repeats.

Can I relate to this thread! I'm a downhill skier. I have lost count of how many years since I last went downhill. Buller is only 2 hrs from here to be on the snow. My last pair of skis were before fat carvers were invented.
Had the accountant in this morning - the first stage in getting the place ready for market. When it's sold, I'll be able to ski again. :woohoo: Anyone want to buy my business? LOL

Did you rupture the ACL while skiing?

I haven't has skis on since they flew off in opposite directions in a fall down the steep slopes of Guthega Way at approximately 11.30am, 12 September 2018.

Following a fractured tibia, fibula and tibial plateau, 9 operations and an ongoing staph infection to this day, more surgery coming up in February 2020 and possibly in September 2020, I fully intend to click back into my Salomon Q-85's in winter 2021.

My drought at the moment is 16 months 1 day and I check in here every day and look at the snow cams every day, still hoping that those last remaining snow drifts will remain as long as they can on the Guthega and Mt K cams.

Skiing again doesn't scare me. At the moment, going down escalators and being kicked in the shin beneath the dining table scare me more than anything.

Does this qualify, or should I stick with the 'injured forumites' thread?

I'll head up this year, bought the kids Epic Passes so that they can ski Whistler January 2021 as well, all the time while I sample local bevvies and dream about winter 2021.

I can very much relate to this, the career change was to become a teacher, but I still own my Bakery. When I started teaching I only intended to do casual work, but the right job at the right school close to home came up, it could be ten years before that happens again, so I took the job.

Problem is I still own the Bakery, it works sort of, but part of why I can't ski is that I need to go back 'on tools' most school holidays to give my staff their holidays. So if you sell your shop you could buy mine! LOL

Your's is a "lifestyle business" - get to talk the talk and talk the walk all winter long. Minor details not important on the brochure (like not getting out to ski yourself!).
My chain, ah business, is also a "lifestyle business" where you can live the dream every day and still go skiing during the Aussie Winter. It's just the remaining 300 days non-stop x 14+ hours that I would like somebody else to take on board - as a lifestyle.
Sticking with the thread (sorta), it's now 4 years since I enjoyed the Northern Hemi delights and I'm really frustrated seeing the beautiful pics and trip reports coming in.

Reading this again, my post does sound a little doom and gloom, and I take the point made above regarding first world problems. A thread like this will start a bit that way.

However I started it so I don't miss the excitement of a members euphoric return, the aim is to be able to enjoy another members long awaited excitement, not to place ourselves on a ladder of who has it worst.

For example the @Undies trip report will give me a different kind of enjoyment knowing he has overcome injury and had to spend some time on the sidelines.

Birth of twins lead to a break for me from August 2015 to July 2018. Living in Sydney we had no real prospects of skiing regularly again for years (two older kids in day care draining the purse rapidly already), so we solved that by moving to Jindabyne. First days skiing was the very next day after moving, weeks on end of packing mixed in with flu before hand, unpacking after moving with four kids including year 1 old twins. My first day skiing not euphoric! Attempting to ski with the lead up was the most exhausting thing I've ever done, I ached all day and could not ski for shit.

Looking forward to being able to post it!

Although, and don't tell any of my friends yet, but I'm going to give this whole snowboarding caper a bit of a go again on this trip. 27 years on skis, so I suppose it's time I see what all the fuss is about.

It's a skiing forum, pretty much any problem is a first world problem on here!

I'm mid-drought due to a back injury, it'll be right on 18 months in July. That's when I'll finish up at my current job, take my redundancy package (one I am happy about) and maybe take a week or two to get reacquainted with the hills :)

I think the longest has been a year. (ie missed the nth hemi once or twice..) We had the season passes built into the budget, even the Mat leave budget.

@Undies i know a few people who have moved to the dark said "because, knees" I was considering it. But i still think i will fall more learning a new sport than going back to the old one! Curious to hear your thoughts.

Early September 2018 - had my last run at Coronet Peak and haven't strapped on the skis since. Missed out on a last minute trip to Mt Hotham last season when I had a nasty case of financial responsibility and restraint. :(

On the one hand, I've had at least a couple days on skis every season since 1980, but it could be argued I haven't skied properly for the last five years due to being overweight and unfit. Fixed that for this (northern) winter and have been really enjoying my skiing instead of suffering the aches and huffing and puffing. I truly feel like I've turned the clock back, best turns in probably 6-7 years, despite slow start in snow conditions.

I too have shed a few kgs since last ski, about 12-15 of them, that's also part of my problem I did it by becoming a MAMIL, now when I have spare coin I often 'waste' it on bike stuff. Stupid part about that is that I got into cycling to improve my skiing, but I haven't skied since I bought the bike.
